running 1:05:00 [2]

Met Snorkel at Wyandotte to run around the lake. When I arrived, I found his car but no sign of him. It turned out he was off running some hills! We wandered around the lake. I felt terrible.

Wednesday Aug 29, 2001 #

Note

I suffered a bit near the end of the run yesterday, so I thought a day off would be good. I also needed to go up to Smithville and take a look at the W.O.W. map to see if it needed any updates. The map was fine. I managed to reach the map just at the same time as a huge thunderstorm (actually the storm hit as I turned at Paradise). Lots of storms were popping up all around -- spectacular to watch, but better to watch than to be out in.

running 1:30:00 [2]

I ran on the roads at Wyandotte. I threw in ten minutes at an honest effort. The run didn't feel great. Perhaps I was just a bit tired. Perhaps it was the thick humidity (luckily it was only about 88 degrees when I ran). I carried the map and did a fair amount of map reading -- peering off into the forest, looking for features.

Monday Aug 27, 2001 #

Note

No running tonight. I mowed the lawn instead.

Sunday Aug 26, 2001 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Riding over to the Barnes and Noble to by the Sunday paper.

running 1:00:00 [2]

Ran on the roads along the bunny loop. I wasn't sure how it was going to feel. Once I warmed up, it felt quite good.

Saturday Aug 25, 2001 #

running 2:30:00 [1]

I took a long, but quite easy, run at Weston Bend. I carried a small bottle of gatorade and a Clif bar (I drank the gatorade but saved the clif bar) and a camelback full of water. I took frequent short breaks to walk a bit. It was quite easy, but still tiring. I carried the map and read it a little bit.

running 30:00 [2]

I arrived at SMP a bit early. So, I jogged around for a while. I carried the 1985 O' map and looked for places to put controls.

running 1:10:00 [2]

Dan and I ran, mostly on trails, at SMP. Near the end we did ten minutes at an honest effort. We both survived.

cycling 40:00 [1]

Another hot day and a bunch of thunderstorms coming through = another easy effort. I did some biking on the bunny loop.

Tuesday Aug 21, 2001 #

running 1:15:00 [2]

When I left for my run it was 99 with a "heat index" of 104 -- not good conditions for running. I took it quite easy.

Monday Aug 20, 2001 #

Note

Spent some time pushing the mower around the lawn. The heat is definetly coming back.

Sunday Aug 19, 2001 #

orienteering 20:00 [1]

Orienteering in the Pendleton's corn maze. I had to walk (Pendleton's prohibit running in the corn). Fritz' course made for a lot of map reading and route choice. 12 controls.

cycling 50:00 [1]

Some biking after we took Susan to the airport. It feels like the nice weather might be coming to an end -- it'll probably be hot next week.

Saturday Aug 18, 2001 #

running 1:45:00 [2]

I shuffled around Weston Bend. It felt pretty good. I carried a few hounces of sport drink (learning a lesson after last weekend's run).

Friday Aug 17, 2001 #

cycling 40:00 [1]

An easy bike ride.

Thursday Aug 16, 2001 #

running 1:00:00 [2]

I was feeling a bit odd, but went for a run anyways. The run felt good. I threw in 10 minutes at an honest effort.

Wednesday Aug 15, 2001 #

Note

Planned to do a bit of easy training, but instead I went to bed early. I felt a bit worn out and tired. It was either the beginning of a cold (Mary is just getting over a cold) or the results of a bad night's sleep and the nerves of presenting a report.

Tuesday Aug 14, 2001 #

running 1:05:00 [2]

Snorkel and I jogged around at Wyandotte.

Monday Aug 13, 2001 #

cycling 40:00 [1]

Rode around enough to work up a decent sweat and relax a bit. My legs felt a bit sore from yesterday (too much running on hard roads and trails?).

Sunday Aug 12, 2001 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

running 1:30:00 [2]

I jogged around at Weston Bend (carried the O' map and read it a bit). It wasn't too hot, but it was warm enough to be a bit tough. I could have used a blast of Gatorade or a pack of Gu after about 50 minutes.

Saturday Aug 11, 2001 #

cycling 55:00 [1]

Took an easy ride on the bunny loop. The weather was fantastic -- 68 when I left the house.

running 30:00 [2]

Shuffled around a bit. It did not feel good.

Friday Aug 10, 2001 #

Note

I'm taking a couple of days off to recover from travel and relax a bit. I'll do some easy excercise on the weekend.

Wednesday Aug 8, 2001 #

running 10:00 [2]

I flew from Stockholm to KC today. When I got home, I headed out to shuffle around for a few minutes -- just to loosen up a bit after a long flight.

Tuesday Aug 7, 2001 #

orienteering 1:30:00 [2]

Sanna, the King of Lunsen and I ran around a course at Lunsen. We took turns leading legs. It was a lot of fun -- perfect ending to a trip to Sweden. 9 controls.

Monday Aug 6, 2001 #

orienteering 55:00 [2]

Jogged to and from Sunnerstaåsen and ran a course. I took it easy and just jogged around the course (but trying to concentrate and navigate well). 15 controls.

Sunday Aug 5, 2001 #

Note

James, Kenny and I cleaned up the police school (didn't anyone see the sign about returning sheets and towels?), paid the laundry bill, and then I flew back to Stockholm-Uppsala.

Saturday Aug 4, 2001 #

orienteering 35:00 [2]

Ran at Hallila -- carrying the map and reading it pretty carefully.

Friday Aug 3, 2001 #

orienteering 32:00 [5]

Short qualifier at Päiväjärvi. I ran well and navigated well. Had one boom near the end. Although I didn't qualify, this was really fun. 12 controls.

Thursday Aug 2, 2001 #

orienteering 48:00 [5]

Relay at Vattula. Running the last leg for US, I had to go out in the 'omstart' (they began a good 20 minutes before the advertised start, so I had only just begun to jog to warm up). Had a sloppy boom near the end. We passed Canada (a huge boom on the same control). Having the US Juniors in the crowd was fantastic -- Thanks. 19 controls.

Wednesday Aug 1, 2001 #

orienteering 50:00 [4]

Ran a course at Valkjärvi. Next to Kauppi, this is the easiest (physically) terrain I'd run in at Tampere. The course was fun. Raced James a bit during the second half of the course. Feel like my O' is getting a good bit better each day -- this was the best yet. 11 controls.
