Ran at Hepolammi -- taking short and difficult controls (no markers were actually out), practicing using a magnifier, and begin careful to orienteer well. I kept the pace quite low.
Running and walking around the classic model area (Aitovuori). I was experimenting with my pace and speed and beginning to find the right speed and effort. 9 controls.
Third (and my last) day at Oringen. I had a decent run -- a couple of sloppy controls, but not too bad. I moved up a bit and finished 10 for the day. 14 controls.
2nd day. It went ok, but I'm still struggling with getting the right speed into controls. Parts of the course went very well...but, I boomed a couple of controls. 14 controls.
Mary, Sanna, the King of Lunsen and I did some O' practice at Lunsen. Lunsen is probably the most difficult area I've ever run in. Sanna and I took turns leading and following. 5 controls.
Ran around the woods at Lappis with Ken, Dan and Boris. We carried maps and used them a bit. At one point, we lost Ken and spent a good bit of time looking for him (thinking he's smashed his head and was lying unconcious in the woods -- actually, he was on his way home). Fun.
The last day at Östergötland. Another fun course and another day where both the navigation and running went better. It was a chase start, which is always fun. 13 controls.
My legs feel a bit dead after wandering around all day in Stockholm yesterday. I won't do a run in Uppsala today. Today is a travel day. Monday through Wednesday I'll run Östgöta 3-days in Finspång. It should be fun (depsite the forecast of rain the whole time).
My goal for the 3-days is to get up to speed with navigation -- run the right speed at the right time and avoid booms.
One of my plans for yesterday was to wear myself out a bit so I'd fall asleep easily (instead of staying wide awake until late in the night as I did the night before). It worked and I got a good nights sleep. I'm not entirely un-jet-lagged. But, I'm getting close. Today will be an light day. I'm heading off to Stockholm to explore a bit (probably wander up to my old haunts around Lappis. I wonder if the same folks still run the pizza place?). If I feel good, I'll run a short course at Sunnersta åsen or Vårdsäta skogen.
Went to Siggefora with Peter, Staffan, Gunilla and Lena. Staffan put out tapes. It was fun -- nice orienteering (a bit rough for my legs that aren't used to running in Swedish forests). ST=139.
Note
In the afternoon, I biked over to Nåsten and walked around a bit with the map finding a few controls.
O' training at Lunsen. I ran harder (but not faster) than I planned. The area was really complex -- I was glad there were markers out or I'd have been very uncertain about a couple of the controls. ST=125.
Arrived in Sweden in the morning, ran my first orienteering in the evening. IF Thor had a little event at Slottet. The competition was tough. There are two Swiss regional junior squads (15-20 year old and coaches) here. I strolled around the course at a honest effort. ST=119.
Leaving for Sweden tomorrow, so I've got to spend some time packing and organizing tonight. I won't run or bike today. I'll do my best to keep my training up-to-day on Attackpoint. But, I don't expect to have daily internet access.
While Gene (and Fritz?) did the Lizard, Mary and I went to SMP for a run. The park was "closed" because of a triathalon. So, we couldn't park by the tennis courts. It was warm (about 90 and humid). I ran on trails and did ten minutes at an honest effort.
My stomach felt ok. But, I took it easy. My plan through the next week or so is to just do a bit of easy training -- nothing too hard. An easy bike ride was just right. After riding, I mowed the lawn. Not hard work, but with the heat and humidity it was draining anyways.
The "apparent temperature" was higher in KC than in Tucson today. I suffered. I threw in 10 minutes at an honest effort. The last 15 minutes of the run was tough (no matter how slow I went I was suffering).
Mary, Mean Gene and I went up to Weston Bend for a run. We carried the map and took a look at it now and then. After about 80 minutes I put in ten at an honest effort. It felt decent. I felt MUCH better today than I did yesterday (something was not right yesterday, but I don't know what).
