running 20:00 [3]

Tonight was class night, so I just squeezed in a little jog.

The dead possum on the trail is quite smelly. Both times I passed by a Turkey Vulture was enjoying a meal of dead smelly possum.

I think class went well. But, it is hard to tell.

I watched a bit of my brother's demo today. I'm sure he's a much better teacher than I am. Maybe I can pick up some good tips (on teaching and on making chocolate chip cookies).

running 20:00 [2]

Short jog on West Campus.

There's a dead possum. A big dead possum, but probably not the world's largest dead possum. It wasn't there (the little trail off of Lawrence Ave and Clinton Parkway) when I ran on Sunday. It is gross.

Cut things short to give me a bit of extra time to read/skim the papers the students turned in. We've got class tomorrow. I won't have the papers graded, but I need to have a feel for how things are going.

I went out for a bit of a bike ride on the roads. I felt good, but wasn't out long.

Dinner...Mary got Terrebonne Cafe takeout. I had red beans and rice with Andouie (sp?) sausage. I also ate some beans yesterday.

Note

We had reservations at Old Faithful this winter. But they're not opening for overnight visits. We decided to cancel the entire trip. Fortunately, we will have a replacement....the World's Largest Baseball:

I jogged through a course on campus with my 1:10K Lawrence map (printed at 1:7500). The course was fun and I felt good.

I delayed starting my run to let a line of lightning pass by.

Note

Something was wrong with me this morning. I felt fine. I walked a little bit to warm up before my run and then started running. But after maybe 10 seconds I stopped. It was like something was wrong between my brain and my legs. So I walked a few minutes and then started running again...and stopped after a few seconds. I don't know what was wrong with me.

I ended up spending about 30+ minutes trying to start running and not be able to.

Shuffled around on West Campus. Felt kind of muggy. Not nearly as nice as it has been the last few days. Not much of this weather left.

MTB on pavement, the levee and the river trails. Fun.

Dinner is left overs from last night...a black bean burger. Yum.

Went for a job on campus this morning. I wasn't feeling especially energetic. But I also wanted to get some time on my feet. I'll probably go for a bike ride later today.

I listened to a Swedish podcast interview with Marita Skogum. If you can manage the language, the interview is interesting.

MTB cycling 1:20:00 [1]

MTB on bike paths over to the arboretum and then a few loops on the mowed grass trails. Fun.

I washed my bike when I got home. I heard a faint hissing sound as I was finishing up. I had a largish thorn in the rear tire and the air was slowly leaking out. I guess that's what I get for riding on the mowed paths. I didn't fix the tire. I'll do that tomorrow or whenever.

I found a West Campus map that Mary had used for a control picking course. I jogged through it. Lots of controls and a little tricky to see where to go because there was another course on the same map. I kept the pace very easy. Fun.

MTB on the pavement. Fun.

When I got back home, I checked my KU email and found a message from a student. The syllabus has an assignment with two different due dates. I figure that if there is an error, I should go with the date that gives the students more time. But that makes grading a bigger chore because two assignments are going to be due at the same time. Frustrating to make a mistake like that. I spent a bunch of time adjusting dates and "date management" within Blackboard. But I didn't catch it.

Class tonight, so no exercise other than a walk right after work.

Class went well. The students had good questions. Everyone came to class (live online).

running 20:00 [2]

Short jog and then made dinner.

After dinner I asked Mary if she wanted to watch the rest of Get Duked. I was surprised when she said, "go ahead an watch it without me." I did.

Today I ate no beans.

OK sprinty course at the Overlook. Fun and a good run. Not fast enough to keep up with Dean, Eric and Tom.

Gene set the course and focused on fun and pleasant. It was fun and pleasant.

I took a bad route on the long leg largely because I thought it would be more fun to run a new route rather than turnaround and run the way I'd come. That probably cost me maybe 10-20 seconds.

Since we're in a global pandemic, we did things a bit different than usual. We required preregistration. We required people to wear masks except when they were actually on the course. Compliance was good. We asked people to social distance. That seemed to work well. We didn't print out splits or post results, since both of those things tend to lead people to congregating close together. We didn't provide any snacks or drinks.

After the run, a few of us sat far apart at the shelter and ate lunches we'd all brought. I had a leftover black bean burger.

The burger was leftover from last night. In 2019, we had our anniversary dinner at Bon Bon. It was quite good. This year I made black bean burgers. That was quite good, but maybe not as good as Bon Bon.

Jogging. Comfortable temps. Humid, but cool enough (low 60s) that it felt ok.

I shuffled through a course on the main campus using the Lawrence 1:10K map (enlarged to 1:7500 for ease of reading). Fun. Still plenty of places the map needs work.

Home in time to watch the last hour+ of today's Tour De France stage.

Note

I usually wake up before my alarm, but today I didn't. The alarm woke me up. That usually means I'm a bit tired. I decided to take a day off from running or biking. I went for a little walk after work.

I watched my brother on instagram teaching cake piping. The students have to do some piping as homework.

running 45:00 [2]

Easy and slow jog on west campus. Nice weather continues.

Beans for dinner tonight.

At lunch I watched another of my brother's demos on instagram. He was making something called "pate a choux." I learned that you should throw you trash on the floor in the kitchen.

Note

Had the first live online class meeting of the semester. I think it went ok. Pleasantly surprised that we didn't have any serious tech issues and that all of the students showed up.

After class....ate some beans.

A short jog on West Campus in the wonderful weather! Temp was mid 50s, a bit of a north wind and some misty rain. It felt so good.

Note

I spent some time today on instagram watching my brother teach future chefs about making custard. If you know him, it is kind of fun. I guess it might also be interesting if you like making custard.

MTB cycling 2:05:00 [1]

MTB on roads, levee and single track. Fun. I got out before it was too terribly hot and there was enough shade that I felt comfortable.

When I finished up on the river trail I spotted Meangene. He was just starting a trail run.

Lots of people out on the river trails today. Town was quiet.

Campus was quiet but not empty. KU had classes today. KU would normally have a holiday, but since the semester schedule was shifted (mostly everyone done with on-campus classes before Thanskgiving), they made today a regular class day. Some students were "striking" today. I'm not sure if that made any difference as I haven't been through campus on a normal class day. It was good to see lots of social distancing and essentially everyone wearing a mask.

I didn't eat any beans yesterday. I haven't eaten any today. But maybe I'll have some with dinner.

1

Note

I made a remote sprint map of Mount Sunflower yesterday. 1:4000 with 2.5 meter contours.

I'm tired of warm weather. When I checked the conditions at 6:45 a.m. the temp was 77F and the dewpoint was 70F.

I shuffled around on West Campus. It was sweaty. The sun felt warm.

I ran a short sprint course from an OK event a few years ago. I don't remember running this course before. Fun. My mind seemed to be working ok.

When I got home I watched some of this weekend's viestiliiga race on youtube. It was a sprint relay. The course looked interesting. But an interesting sprint course isn't usually so interesting to watch.

Yesterday, I ate beans.

Easy running. I saw a bunch of Dog Days runners in the distance as they headed south on Iowa towards the tunnel. I didn't see MeanGene.

Part of a course on the Lawrence 10K map (enlarged to 1:7500). Fun, but I made a little parallel error on one control. That was sloppy.

Legs felt ok. I wasn't sure how they'd feel after yesterday's long walk.

Friday Sep 4, 2020 #

Note

We went to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve this morning to take a long walk. We had reasonable weather - low 60s at the start and low 80s at the finish. I felt a bit worn by the heat at the end, but I'm not very tolerant of warm weather.

We saw the bison in the distance.

I made a remote map of the area when I was first learning to use QGIS. I carried it with me and looked at it a lot. It is kind of interesting how difficult it can be to judge distances without any features like trees to help judge the size of things.

We walked for 3 hours. I was tired when we got home.

Thursday Sep 3, 2020 #

running 25:00 [2]

Shuffled around a little on West Campus.

I'm taking tomorrow as a vacation day to make it 4 days off of work. That's nice.

Lunch was a leftover black bean burger.

Wednesday Sep 2, 2020 #

Note

No exercise today. I mowed the lawn. I ate beans at lunch.

Tuesday Sep 1, 2020 #

running 40:00 [2]

Shuffled around a bit and felt ok. But also felt like 40 minutes was plenty.

I picked up the groceries that I ordered yesterday. I'm making black bean burgers as I type.
