Note

Mowed and spent time on the KU class. I'm feeling a little behind on the class prep. I need to spend more time on it the next few days.

MTB cycling 2:00:00 [1]

MTB on bike paths and roads. My legs felt a bit tired from yesterday's running. It rained yesterday and Sanders Mound is back to being an island, but just barely.

On the way home I spotted Mary heading out. So I joined her and we biked home together. That was nice.

Note

Just noticed I'm two minutes behind Cristina for the week training. I guess I might have to do a couple of minutes of something.

orienteering 1:10:59 intensity: (1:08 @1) + (3:47 @2) + (26:43 @3) + (39:21 @4) 9.98 km (7:07 / km)
ahr:150 max:169 18c

Ft Leavenworth Adventure score orienteering. We didn't have to run in the forest, but we got some time on the trails. that was fun. The trails are in pretty good shape and were wet but not muddy. I started late enough that early runners had dealt with the spider webs.

I'm not good at spotting the best route for score courses, so my decision about the order of controls was sub-optimal. That's ok, it is fun anyways.

Nice conditions, cloudy, cool-ish, and damp. That helped my legs feel ok once they got going. No warmup, so I warmed up on the way to the first control. That felt terrible, but once I was going I felt fine.

It is always fun to run inside the walls of the old prison. We also had a nice downhill leg in the "ruts" of the Oregon and Santa Fe trail.

Was surprised to see Reta out there. That was cool. She said she can't yet run. Saw Dick N and Paul S. Gave Dick the compasses I'd borrowed for the KU class and loaned Paul my laser range finder.

Met and chatted briefly with Callahan (sp?). He studied and orienteered in England. I think he's going to the GCSC at Leavenworth. He was fit looking. I think he beat me by a good 5-6 minutes.

The final NoLaw 5K of the year. I felt pretty good. The temps were comfortable. I was still a minute+ slower than the May race, but I was still happy with the effort. I'm just so slow these days.

running 10:00 [2]

Warm up jogging with Fritz. Mostly on the levee.

Note

Grading papers. Kind of interesting, but also kind of a chore. The assignment is an audit critique of up to 2 pages. Each student picked a different report, which is both good and bad. Good is that it is more variety. Bad is that it makes the grading a little more time consuming. Also, "up to 2 pages" means 1 page is ok, but only one student did just one page.

running 45:00 [2]

I jogged around on West Campus. It felt ok. I went slowly.

I saw Mom's car by the Monarch Watch building. A group of people were outside. I guess she was there, but I didn't stop to check.

Note

Today was the orienteering course for the class at KU I helped out last week (which is not the class I'm teaching this semester). The class is for freshmen only and is part of KU's first year seminar series:

https://firstyear.ku.edu/fys

The specific class is ANTH 177 Boots, Machetes, and Lasers: Lost Cities and How to Find Them.

https://firstyear.ku.edu/first-year-seminars-2019

The prof got the idea of including orienteering from an archaeology colleague at University of Alabama Birmingham named Sarah Parcak. I've no idea how she knew of orienteering. She's known for remote sensing and archaeology.

I set a course that went to a dozen spots on campus where the students would find some information to answer a question. Most of the points were a bit out of the way. Gene helped out by putting hot pink tapes at each location. He also picked them up this afternoon, saving me the chore of picking them up.

The students all did fine. They worked in teams of two. They all seemed to have fun. They all seemed engaged in the exercise, not just wandering around. One team got all 12 points. None of them seemed to have any navigation problems (which I attribute to what I taught them last week!). Nice weather helped. The professor seemed happy with how it went and recognized the value of map reading and navigating as a good exercise.

All in all, a good experience.

And something odd and completely unrelated...while I was updating this note on my log, I had some music playing in the background. And The Ark came on with a Eurovision entry...how odd:

A short sprint course on West Campus. Fun.

MTB cycling 2:30:00 [1]

MTB on a mix of the Lawrence Loop and roads in Clinton State Park. Fun.

The water level is now low enough that you can bike to Sanders Mound. It has been a long time since Clinton was that low. Of course, water is still high enough that the beach and the west boat ramp are closed.

My legs were tired near the end.

running 1:10:00 [2]

I shuffled around on west campus for a bit. I felt pretty good. Temps were ok, the sky was cloudy, and I felt a few rain drops.

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

Bike around on campus checking the locations for Monday's orienteering. Fun and kind of interesting to explore on a MTB where you have to think a lot more about stairs.

Note

KU class note. I made my first stupid Blackboard mistake. I had a quiz that was not yet available to students. But the next quiz was available. So they did the readings, but then the quiz covered different readings. Stupid mistake. I've corrected it and extended the due date. Two students had already started the wrong quiz. Drat.

MTB cycling 55:00 [1]

MTB on the paved paths. I went out to Clinton and looked at the water level. It looks like it might be possible to reach Sander's Mound in a few more days. The water level continues to fall.

My legs felt really good biking. That was nice.

I was at a KU class today and talked about orienteering maps and map making. The class will have a score course on campus next Monday. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Note

No running or biking. I mowed the lawn. I also did some prep for an intro to orienteering lecture at a KU class.

And...I spent some time researching kolbottnar. I found a cool map of old features across Sweden. It includes a bunch of kolbottnar. Fun.

Monday Sep 16, 2019 #

MTB cycling 30:00 [1]

Running an errand. I had a surprise visit with Lucy!

I also discovered something really cool...a Master's thesis about using lidar to detect kolbottnar.

Note

One of the runners at today's orienteering was a high school (or possibly junior high?) kid who got credit for his "online PE course" for today's orienteering. How strange, but good.
9 AM

orienteering 30:26 intensity: (21 @1) + (3:24 @2) + (10:17 @3) + (16:24 @4) 2.85 mi (10:41 / mi)
ahr:149 max:168 11c

OK event at Clinton Overlook. Eric S set the course. The course was nice with no rough vegetation.

I was at the start helping people get going and had decided I'd skip running the course. But Eric talked me into it. So I ran, without any warm up and not pushing. Despite not pushing, my h.r. was high. Some of that's the heat and humidity. It was ok in the shade, but the sun was warm. Lots of sweat.

I stepped on a thorn near control 7. The thorn went through the bottom of my shoe. I tried to pull it out quickly, but it broke off, leaving the thorn in the sole and my foot. I walked carefully to the trail/sidewalk, sat down and was able to pull it out.

cycling 35:00 [1]

This is the total cycling time to/from my class at KU. The class went ok. I felt like I wasn't on, but the other speakers did well. The students seemed engaged and interested (and interesting).

When I left, I discovered that the rear tire of my commuter bike was nearly flat. I added air in the morning but there must be a leak. I started to walk the bike home and John spotted me. He offered me a ride, so I parked the bike and got a lift home.

At home, I got my new mini pump and jogged back to the bike. I was able to pump up the tire pretty easily (the new mini pump actually works!). I biked about 3/4 of the way home before the slow leak made the tire too low to ride. I walked that last bit to get home.

running 30:00 [2]

Running to get my bike.

I would call this "running with a pump" (which is sort of like a log). Ross Edgely would have been impressed.

It was hot when I was running.

running 35:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (10:00 @4)

Nice day. I ran on West Campus and included 10 minutes at an honest effort.

Note

The thread about NorAm elite development included this comment:

When Orienteering Canada and OUSA practically have to beg clubs to host our major events you kind of have to host them when the host clubs are willing / able.

I wonder why club need to be begged to host events. I have some thoughts, but I'm not really sure.

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Time for summer to end. I'm tired of the heat.

I biked out to Clinton. The water level is lower than I've seen it in months (but still well above normal. It will be awhile before Sanders Mound isn't an island.

Note

A few quick notes from BAOC event/California visit (not sure I'll get around to updating each individual race).

Fun to visit Mary's mom and see kj and bj.

Running felt bad on both the middle and long. I don't understand why.

But, running felt ok on the sprints. I ran out of energy on the relay. But, I was moving/feeling better than I've felt since the PTOC sprint at SarKoPar back in May.

We stayed in Cupertino and has some extra time so we visited the Apple HQ visitor center. The model of the campus and virtual-reality app were cool.

I enjoyed orienteering in the redwoods at Big Basin, but I'm in no big hurry to get back there.

The sprints were fun. I understand what the mapper was trying to do with the multi-level buildings. But I couldn't really make sense of the multi-level mapping. I guessed right most of the time.

Dave Linthicum looks almost exactly the way he looked when I first met him in 1980 (or maybe it was 1981?). It was really good to see him.

We traveled with Simon and that worked out well (at least for us, I hope we weren't too old and boring for him). We had a lot of good conversations, everything from uncles in Mongolia to Denmark's national team sprint preparations.

MTB cycling 1:40:00 [1]

I should have gone for a run in the morning. But, I lounged around the house, drank coffee, read the paper, worked on a map project, and worked on the KU class. Then it got hot. I decided a MTB ride would be the best way to get outside without suffering too much.

I biked to the river trail and did some single track. I haven't done that in a while. I felt a bit clumsy. They've made a few changes to the trail. I think that's to address problems with erosion along the river bank from the high water this year.

Fun, but hot.

MTB cycling 1:40:00 [1]

Bike paths and roads - I visited Clinton State Park.

As I was heading west on the bike path past the Arboretum, I spotted an ambulance driving east on the bike path. The ambulance stopped and I could see that someone was on or next to the trail, sitting up. I reached the spot about a minute later. A cyclist was sitting in the grass next to the trail. A bike was next to him. He looked ok or not seriously hurt. But, he must have been hurt enough to call for an ambulance.

He was at a spot on the trail that was very slick. Rain washes very fine mud onto the trail. Where it is wet, it becomes slick. When I bike through those areas, I always roll slowly and often unclip my pedals. I think the problem could be fixed if the path had been designed with a bit more care.

7 AM

running 40:00 [2]

I shuffled around on West Campus. My legs felt dead for the first 10-15 minutes. And I ran slowly the entire time.

Temps were ok. Air was humid. Grass was very wet.
