cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Met Mary downtown to exchange some docs that I need to FedEx to USAA for a used car loan. I'm buying Dad's old car - a 2011 Toyota Camry with ~46K miles on it and automatic transmission. It is a great old man's car.

running 30:00 [2]

Shuffled around on West Campus. Felt ok. Slow, but ok.

running 20:00 [2]

Shuffled around a little bit. My legs felt pretty good and I didn't think about my right ankle at all.

Drove to work to avoid huge rain/wind/thunderstorm in the morning.

Note

And a bit of an update on the future of independent performance auditing in Lawrence. This is what I sent the members of the governing body today:

I have accepted another job and will end my employment with the City on or about July 14.

I hope that the City Commission will continue to discuss the independent performance audit function, strengthen the function and fill the City Auditor position. I believe that an audit committee would strengthen both the independence and performance of the audit function. An independent audit function supports the City Commission to provide oversight and strengthens the credibility of the entire organization.

I am proud of what performance auditing has achieved in Lawrence. I’m proud I can demonstrate measurable savings that have exceeded all the expenditures for performance auditing since 2008. I’m proud of two successful external quality controls reviews that demonstrate the quality of my internal quality control processes and my compliance with Government Auditing Standards. I’m proud that the Lawrence audit function received national recognition including a national award, positive press, requests to mentor other audit shops, and invitations to present at national conferences.

Got to work today with a plan. They're replacing windows in the building and mine would be replaced tomorrow, so I needed to do some organizing of stuff in my office to make room for the work.

But, it turns out they were making faster progress than I'd been told and when I arrived the workers had moved my stuff and starting removing the windows.

I turned around and biked home. I would work at home. When I got home, the temp was pretty comfortable, so I set up in the table in the back yard. It was perfect (though it got hot later)...except, with the new change in ownership of the local cable/internet provider, there was all sorts of trouble with my internet connection. It worked for a while, then would die. I'd turn the model off and then on and it would work again for a while.

By early afternoon, it was too hot to sit outside, but the internet was reliable. I had a hour+ conference call that went well.

So that was a long write up of a light day - work commute = 45 minutes.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute with a temp in the 50s for the trip to work. It felt very nice.

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging on West Campus. My legs feel tired from the weekend. My right ankle feels a little sore, but the swelling has gone down quite a bit.

cycling 50:00 [1]

Up early to catch a flight home from Boise. Long-ish travel day, but no delays or problems, so that's good.

Went out on the bike path with Mary to get moving a bit and break a sweat. Fun.

Middle course. Fun but tiring. Tiring because of the altitude and the deadfall. I had a little swing at 3 when I got a little off line going to the circle. I was confused by the contours as I was near 6. I was moving slowly there.

Long green in Idaho. Fun terrain and spectacular scenery.

The course was ok, would have been more fun if the longer legs were more interesting (see legs 3, 5, 7 and 10).

I turned my right ankle near 15.

We had a "map flip" where the first part of the course was on one side and the second part was on the other side. For some reason I couldn't get QR to cut the track, so both DOMA maps show the entire track.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

I considered running, but I spent a few minutes outside and decided it wasn't going to be any fun with the heat and humidity.

Long and interesting day at work. Together with the KU and State auditors I've been hosting a training day in Lawrence most years (I think this was the 5th one). We had about 35 people from 11 audit shops and lots of really good discussion.

Note

Just got a "tied, the race is tight" email from Cristina-bot.

When time is tied, Cristina-bot sends me an email every hour. Fortunately, I realized I hadn't yet logged yesterday's work commute. I added that. That should keep Cristina-bot quiet for a while.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It was hot, even in the morning.

When I got home, I relaxed a bit, drank some water, and mowed the lawn. When I was done mowing my hands were itchy. Must have been some sort of strange allergic reaction to something outside.

cycling 45:00 [1]

The normal work commute except for a mid-trip-home-break to answer a phone call. My Garmin connects to my phone via blue tooth. I can ignore my phone ringing/vibrating, but for some reason I can't ignore my watch vibrating. Strange. In any case, it was a call I needed to take so I stopped my bike, dug out my phone and talked for a few minutes.

running 30:00 [2]

Shuffled around on West Campus. Nice evening to be out.

I got out the door earlier than I usually do. It was cloudy and last night's storms brought some nicer temperatures.

I ran/jogged through a course I designed for Mary a couple of weeks ago. I started on the map I currently call "Mom's Neighborhood" and then went to Mt Oread, and then back to Mom's Neighborhood. Fun and interesting. I also spotted a mapping error where I hadn't shown a sidewalk. I added the sidwalk when I got home.

Gene updated and expanded the Arbo map to include some of the dog park. He set today's course.

After last night's storms, the trails were wet and the air was humid. I got started while the sun was still behind the clouds. The humidity map for a lot of sweat running behind my eyeglasses and into my eyes. Ouch.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It must have been the hotest day of the year. By the time I got home, I was feeling drained.

running 25:00 [2]

I relaxed a bit post-commute and clouds moved in. It was still warm, but without the sun I figured it'd be bearable. I jogged around on West Campus. I spotted an indigo bunting and confirmed it by hearing the bird song.

Work commute.

Temp was 80F at 6:30 a.m., but actually a good bit cooler when I biked to work as some storms were passing through the area.

TJOC-like humidity for a jog on West Campus. I retrieved a marker that hadn't been picked up last weekend. Nice that people didn't take it.

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

MTB on the bike paths with Mary. We went over to the YSI fields , met Sandy, and watched some of the frisbee dog competition. Mary's co-worker is part of the KC frisbee dog group and they had a big tent we could use to get out of the sun while we watched. She also explained the scoring/judging system for the event we were watching (dog athletic ability, catch/drop ratio, something that I can't remember, and "wow factor.").

It was windy and that caused more missed frisbees than you'd have with a calmer day.

MTB Orienteering 30:00 [1]

I took a mid-frisbee-dog break and did some MTBO legs on the arbo map. The mowed paths were in great shape. I think you could make for a fun MTBO event at the Arbo. I'm not sure it'd be something the Parks/Rec Department would like.

MTB to the Pioneer Cemetery.

orienteering 3:39 [2] ***

A mini-course on the Pioneer Cemetery map that Mary designed for me.

MTB cycling 3:00 [1]

MTB to the start for the course at the engineering building.

orienteering 14:00 [2] ***
16c

This was the course that I designed for Mary a couple of weeks ago and was on a 1:2000 scale enlarged map.

The construction area along Naismith had changed a bit. I could see, but couldn't get to control 6. The construction zone also meant that going from 6-7 was a good 750 meters instead of 50.

It seemed like it was starting to feel a bit warm at this point, especially in the sun.

MTB cycling 6:30 [1]

MTB to Spooner Hall with a little bit of a detour.

orienteering 8:00 [2] ***
8c

A course on the Spooner Hall map that Mary designed. I noticed a couple of changes that need to get made on the map (mostly some new sidewalk construction).

The climb for the last two legs was a bit draining. When I finished, I took a break of a few minutes to sit in the shade on the steps of Spooner Hall and drink some water.

MTB cycling 3:00 [1]

Biking to the start of the next section that began just west of the Chi O fountain.

MTB Orienteering 11:30 [1] ***
5c

MTB orienteering course that I designed this morning. I decided that I would try to take each control and then do a 180 to get going on the next leg - that maximized the stopping and starting.

I took a brief break when the course passed Mom's house and she and Ron were outside. I said hello and chatted a bit. Then I finished the course.

MTB cycling 4:00 [1]

Biking from the end of the MTBO section back to Pioneer Cemetery.

orienteering 3:30 [2] ***
4c

Another mini sprint course that Mary designed. Fun, but I was feeling the heat.

Stood in the shade a few minutes and walked a little after I was done to cool off a bit.

MTB cycling 7:00 [1]

Biking home.

This was a fun session (but a lot of stuff to log on AP). The orienteering training felt useful, even if it wasn't very much. Biking made it easy to carry plenty of water and made it easy to connect the 4 different maps without spending much time.

MTB cycling 45:00 [1]

MTB on the river trails. I was surprised to arrive at the parking lot and there was only one other car (and it was someone fishing, judging by the trailer).

It felt good to ride and the trail was in good shape.

A highlight was spotting a pileated woodpecker. Every time I see them they are flying away and I don't get a very good look. It'd be fun to get a better look at one.

Work commute. Pretty annoying day. Was on the agenda for the City Commission meeting, but that got deferred. Not until 10:45 p.m., so I still had to wait around City Hall for 5 hours and then didn't get to present.

Also, some nonsense from management:

running 1:30:00 [2]

Jog on the trails at Clinton State Park. We parked by the beach. The trails were fine despite the recent wet weather. The sun was behind clouds and that kept the temp reasonable (82F when we finished), but it was humid.

I didn't see any MTBers or runners, which is unusual. I saw 10 hikers (in 4 groups).

I carried the current version of the map and looked at it occasionally.

I ran the last 15 minutes or so with Mary. That was fun.

2

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

My plan was to ride the river trails once Mary left for her drive to St Louis.

But, just as she left, it started raining. I checked the traffic cams and weather radar and it was clear that the trails were getting more rain than was falling at home. So, I changed my plans. I waited an hour or so. If the sun had come out, I figured the trail would dry. But, the sun didn't come out, so I went out on my MTB on the paved bike path.

A snapshot from the bike path:

ahr:157 max:176 14c

Long-ish sprint course on West Campus. Mary designed the course.

I just don't have the ability to push hard right now, so I started at a bit under an honest effort. I felt pretty good for 15 minutes, then I started feeling tired and overheated. It was warm and humid. I'm not sure of the temperature, but the sun felt warm and the temp was going up. It didn't help that from the 15 minute mark to the finish was mostly uphll. I shuffled on, taking a couple of walking breaks and drinking some water that I'd brought along.

The course was fun - some legs we haven't seen before and a construction area that made a little part of the map feel different. The Lied Center parking lot was full of cars. I'm not exactly sure what was going on at the center, but I saw a bunch of little ballerinas walking around the lot.

Fun.

Mary designed a very short course where the map was whited out except for right at the controls. She enlarged the map to 1:1,500. It was fun. I'm so familiar with the area that it took a lot of concentration to actually use the map instead of just saying, "oh yeah, I know that spot" and then just running on memory of the area.

Fun.

I shuffled around West Campus. It was hotter and more humid than I like, but I felt ok.

I saw MeanGene downtown today. That was fun.

I talked with an auditor colleague who was attacked while out exercising. That was not fun. He was pushed down and punched in the face. He lost a tooth. Not fun at all.
