cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

The trip to the office was in 35F and a steady rain. The trip home was 38F and dry. But, the trip home felt colder. Strange.

running 1:45:00 [2] +233m

Slogging around at Rockcrusher. I carried the map and ran a course, but it was really just a run with a little map reading thrown in. The legs were long and I was mostly just doing the course to have some structure to a long easy run.

Temp was 35F and a rain fell about half of the time. When it wasn't raining, it was misty. So, it was a wet run. We've had a bunch of rain the last few days, so there streams and ditches were full and there were a lot of puddles on the trails.

Around 90 minutes I started feeling tired and got a little cold.

Some orienteering training at Rockcrusher. I set a series of short courses (mostly about 600 meters) with short jog/walk sections between each course.

It turned out to be pretty rough, with a mix of junky woods, deep grass and slippery hills. There was enough ice on rocks and trees to be a bit slick. For a few minutes some freezing ran fell.

I cut things a bit short when I realized I'd be late getting back to the car if I did the last bit.

Jogging/walking between courses and then running back to meet Mary at the car.

A bit of warm up and jogging back to the house.

I figured it was a good idea to avoid driving today. We had some freezing rain. The streets look ok, but it also seemed like a good day to avoid driving.

I set a control picking course on West Campus. It was fun. With that many controls you need to read the map a lot even if the map reading isn't complicated.

I printed the map at 1:6000 so it'd fit on a single sheet of paper. That meant I needed a magnifier to read any detail.

I started in some sleet changing to mist and a little rain. But, it stopped about half way through the run.

Fun.

My right leg feels a bit strange. That started about half way through the Possum Trot. It is better, but still not normal.

running 1:15:00 [2]

Running with a map at the riverfront area. It was cool (43F) and a steady rain fell. It was nice.

I was out on a sand bar and spotted a fossil/bone. That slowed me down and I started jogging along looking for more. I found 5: https://www.instagram.com/p/-j_-E4w05-/?taken-by=o...

I don't know what they are, but I know the river has everything from bison/horses that are just a few hundred years old, to various Pleistocene mamals (like bison, sloth and mastadons). A couple of the things I found seemed old, but I know there's no way to really know unless you really know something about fossils. I don't.

I'm updating the map a bit. I didn't take any notes, but I observed a few things that I will do to bring the map up to date.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

With the next four days away from work, I figure I'll do plenty of running on those days. So, I didn't go to the Trailhawks hill run.

On the way to work, I stopped to watch:

Boom. Time to update the map.

Possum Trot course (note that the routegadget server seems to be unavailable fairly frequently).

Follow the link and you should get the course map. If you ran the event and have a GPX track, just drag the file over to the little yellow box labelled "drop GPX here."

Work commute. My legs felt tired in the morning.

Here are routes from me, pinksocks and Bob Billings at yesterday's Possum Trot:

I started my watch about 10-15 seconds before the actual start. So my track lags a little.

The Possum Trot is back. Eric S. got it going again!

I had a mostly fun run. It wasn't entirely satisfying, but it was fun.

I don't have a good scan of the map because the map is too big to fit in our scanner and I'm too lazy to stitch two images together. So, here is a low resolution QuickRoute (I'll update it when I get a better map image).

Here's the GPS track via the new Routegadget3: http://routegadget.net/kartta/??&step=4&ll=38.9869...

Hmmm....exceeds the capacity length. So I guess that the track is too long.

Work commute. I encountered some crazy drivers on the way home.

I had a surprise visit from Dee at the office today. She had a meeting with the Mayor and dropped by my office afterwards.

running 1:00:00 intensity: (50:00 @2) + (10:00 @4)

I jogged on the trails at Clinton - easy and with a headlamp and map (but hardly even looking at the map). Then I did 2x the hill loop with the Trailhawks. It felt pretty good.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The trip home was in a dark misty rain.

I also helped out with Geo Awareness Week. Turnout was ok but down a bit from the last two years (I think). The people who did the course seemed to be successful and nobody came back upset.

After the event, we met at Dempseys for dinnner and some discussion of The Possum Trot. Eric S is meet director.

I also spent some time looking at Jagge's latest - very cool.

Note

See if this works...it should show the in-progress version of Rockcrusher:

Also, this one should take you to a GPS track of a run I did a few years ago at the start of basketball season:

running 1:30:00 [2]

Trail run at Rockcrusher with the map (but not orienteering, just looking at it now and then).

I ran through a burned area. Yesterday, I ran through the smoke. There were still some smoldering tree limbs in the middle of the burnt grassy area.

I listened to the Radio Oringen podcast with Tove Alexandersson. It was kind of interesting after about 12-20 minutes.

200+ meters of climb.

I drew a course on the Rockcrusher map and ran it at a steady but not hard pace. For the first time in a week+ I felt ok. That was nice.

The course was all on trails and with plenty of climb (a quick count shows that I climbed about 275 meters).

I got started a little late becuase I was playing around with Jagge's latest creation.

running 20:00 [2]

Some extra trail running.

When I got back to the car I checked the KU football score. KU wasn't very far behind. I listened to the radio coverage on the way home and then saw the last few minutes on TV. I guess it goes without saying that they didn't win. But, losing by just 6 is a surprise.

running 1:00:00 [2]

I skipped the Trailhawks hills but ran at Clinton on my own. I stuck to trails.

We had very high winds during the afternoon and the winds were still strong when I ran in the dark. I came across a few trees blown down on the trail. I also met two skunks, one tvattbjorn and a bunch of deer.

My legs felt odd. Not seg, but not normal.

Note

I see Helena Karlsson in the results list from this weekend's DVOA meet. I wonder what she's doing there.

running 1:20:00 [2]

I shuffled around at Rockcrusher with the map in hand. I did plenty of map reading but I was really moving slowly. I had no trouble with the strange feeling in my right leg that I had yesterday. But my legs were "seg."

PTOC red course at Kill Creek.

I decided that I probably could do both the Ft Lev and PTOC events, but maybe not. If it turned out that I couldn't, I decided I'd rather go with Mary to Kill Creek than go on my own to Ft Lev. So, I slept late and went to Kill Creek. That was probably the right decision.

I felt ok for a bit, but then my right leg started feeling strange - like it was stiff from swelling in the back of the knee. It gradually got worse and worse until the finish. I don't think it is anything significant, just lingering inflammation from falling Wednesday. I'd planned to do a second course at Kill Creek, but after one that was enough.

Mary and I dropped by Black Hoof Park after the orienteering and hiked around the lake with a KP + OSM map I'd made over breakfast. Not the nicest forest, but it'd be a good place to introduce people to orienteering and to have a simple sprint course.

Thursday Nov 5, 2015 #

running 25:00 [2]

I drove to work today because my body wasn't feeling very comfortable in the morning.

I shuffled around West Campus a bit this evening to see how things would feel. I'm still sore, but not too terrible.

I need to decide what to do on Saturday. Ft Leavenworth has an adventure race (with a short course as an option) and PTOC has an event at Kill Creek. I think the timing would work out that I could do both events. But right now I'm not sure I could enjoy either of the events. I think I'll be feeling a good bit better by Saturday.

Wednesday night hills with the Trailhawks. With the time change, you need a lamp from the beginning. That's nice. It is so fun to run around with a headlamp.

I did 4 x the loop.

I also did 1x falling down. I was going down the hill from Sanders Mound and tripped. I'm pretty sore now (knees, left hand and right shoulder).

MTB cycling 1:05:00 [1]

MTB on the river trail after work. It was my first night ride in a long time. I like biking at night. It feels so fast (even if you aren't going so fast). I think it is good for technique, too.

Work commute.

I stayed up late and watched baseball and then got up early. I'm sleepy.

If I still wrote my blog, I'd be working on something about orienteering, Denmark, the Royals, and Bill James. But I don't write my blog anymore.

A mix of running and checking a few bits of the map at Rockcrusher. I was out for just under 2 hours. Fun, but a bit warm.

I ended up climbing a good bit.

My legs were a bit tired from yesterday.
