Note

Better than yesterday, but not normal. I haven't had any cold meds since noon and I'm feeling pretty good.

Also, the Royals are in the post season!

Monday Sep 29, 2014 #

Note

Feeling so so. I can feel when the cold meds wear off. I think I feel a little bit better than yesterday.

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

On the river trails and the levee. I took it easy.

Starting sometime last Tuesday I noticed a slightly scratchy throat and I've been taking it easy and trying to take care of myself. Mostly I've done pretty well. But, it is clear that the scratchiness wasn't just alergy but was a mild cold. I'm going to keep taking it easy and get rid of this thing.

Testing a few legs/locations for next weekend's MTBO event.

I was also testing a Nordenmark map board. I like it but it'll take a few more tests to decide if I like it more than the Autopilot map board.

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Up before dawn for a MTB ride on the river trail with Greg Lennon and Magnus. We cleared the spider webs for anyone who came later. Greg and Magnus left for Colorado for an MTBO presentation in Golden tonight.

This was the highlight:

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I left home about 15 minutes later than usual because I had to meet the house painters. Traffic was different than usual.

running 30:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. Really nice and I felt pretty good. It wasn't as fun to run the hill alone as it was to run it while Mook desperately fought to hold my pace (like Sunday). But, it was still fun.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It was very nice weather, especially in the morning when it was chilly.

running 1:20:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton with Mook. We started with a simple course on trails (can't yet get into the woods if you're not crazy). Each leg had two options, Mook generally took the longer option so that we'd be at the control together. I'd call it a kartlek training. The course took about half of the time, then we just jogged back. I learned about Mook's work measuring stars.

MTB cycling 45:00 [1]

Putting out controls on Daisy Hill for the local event. MTB on a mix of pavement and grass and some map reading involved. I was supposed to have the controls out by 10 a.m. and I placed the last one at 9:59.

We had some unexpected attendees - Mook and Hitch. I knew Mook was going to be there, but Hitch's attendance was completely unexpected. Hitch pointed out that Daisy Hill was originally called Daisy Field.

Campus was surprisingly full of people going to the football game. Mostly that was nice (and no controls were taken). They charge $20 to park at the Burge Union for the football game. That seems like a lot of money to park for a KU game. I watched some of the game on TV and the crowd seemed pretty large (for a KU game). And KU won.

Several people at the O' event thanked me for the course. I corrected them and pointed out that I had almost nothing to do with the meet and Mary did alll the work. Funny how people seem to assume I did something.

running 30:00 [2]

Running on West Campus. My legs felt good. I assume that's mostly because it wasn't hot.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Lots of crazy drivers out there. It seems like it usually takes a couple of weeks after the students are all back before drivers start driving reasonably. It seems like it has taken longer this year.

running 25:00 [2]

My actual time was something like 29:47. That gets recorded as 25:00. Maybe I should have jogged a lap or two around the car before I stopped.

I was on the trails at Clinton. Nice weather - and it felt really good

Work commute.

I thought about a jog to the grocery store, but ended up pulling weed instead.

running 1:40:00 [2]

Another trail run at Clinton. I parked at the beach and carried the map (trails + lidar contours). Fun.

The nice weather (maybe 70 when I was running) makes a huge difference. I don't feel worn out the rest of the day.

I met a runner picking up trail markers from the Hawk 50/100/Marathon. I saw a couple of other runners. I also saw a snake and a turtle.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. The Lawrence TH have their 100 miler/50 miler/marathon today. It was fun to see the runners out there. The have perfect weather - temp in the 50s with sun.

I'd actually considered doing the marathon a couple of months ago, but the risk of miserable heat changed my mind. I kind of wish I hadn't change my mind. Maybe next year.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

We'd planned to bike after work - bike to the arbo and have a picnic as our anniversary dinner. When we made the plan we didn't expect low 50s, clouds, north wind and a few light drops of rain. We skipped the biking but not the picnic. It was nice. It was chilly. It reminded us of our 10th anniversary trip to Iceland.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Fall...the weather not crashing. My hands were cold in the morning and on the way home. It felt great.

Felt normal today. I'm not sure what was wrong with me yesterday.

running 50:00 [2]

Trails at Clinton. I listened to a Radio Oringen podcast interview with Gustav Bergman. It was interesting - especially the parts about politics and social issues.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I'd planned to do a run but I started feeling off. I took a nap when I got home. After dinner I'm feeling better but still a bit strange.

MTB cycling 40:00 [1]

MTB on the trails at Clinton. I'm really a klutz, but it is still fun (and I didn't hurt myself).

Sunday Sep 7, 2014 #

running 1:40:00 [2]

Jogging the trails at Clinton from the overlook. I carried a map and made a few notes for updating the MTBO version of the map. I struggle with mapping the ride-ability of the trails.

I also managed to hit my head on a tree. There was a large fallen tree over the trail at about head height. I ducked under it, not realizing it was hiding another tree about a foot behind it. I stood up too soon and hit my head on the second tree. It hurt a bit.

Despite recent rain, the trail was in very nice shape.

Easy biking with Mary on the levee heading north of town.

Note

Skakspiller versus Maja Alm (starts around the 13 minute mark):

http://www.dr.dk/tv/se/versus/versus-3#!/

Sort of like corn maze orienteering.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I stayed at the office a little extra to let the rain stop. I like biking in the rain, but I don't like biking with cars in the rain.

running 20:00 [2]

Easy jog on West Campus.

Thursday Sep 4, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute in crummy hot weather. But, there's a cold front that should drop the temps a good 20 degrees heading this way.

Wednesday Sep 3, 2014 #

Note

Planned to run trails at Clinton. But I changed my plan. It began with a thunderstorm hitting Lawrence at 4:30 and continuing with enough thunder that I lost 2 hours of sleep. That's unusual - a thunderstorm taking so long to pass through. So, I was sleepy all day.

The storm also meant I drove to work instead of biked. I don't mind biking in the rain (though I worry about traffic more), but the lightning isn't so nice.

Then, I attended the UEC meeting. In some ways, the university bureaucracy is stranger than a local government. On the bright side, we got our 9/20 event approved. Geo Awareness Week wasn't on the agenda because it was so far away (which is just strange because there's no reason not to approve both events at the same time).

Also, the sun came out and it got hot and humid.

Tuesday Sep 2, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Heavy fog for the trip to work. Warm and sunny for the trip home.

running 20:00 [2]

Grocery shopping run. It felt hot by the time I got home.

Mary suggested a trip to Topeka and some O' training at Gage Park. To make for some map reading, I set a course with lots of controls. Fun and not so hot due to last night's storms.

We took a very quick look at Kaw River State Park and MacLennan Park. It is definitely worth mapping, but it is 35 minutes from home and I'm not sure I want to drive that far for mapping. An alternative would be a quick MTBO map with Lidar + airphotos + GPS tracks for the trails. That'd take a lot less work.
