Note

Turns out the link to 3D Rerun in DOMA is from March 2012. I first noticed it yesterday.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Humid.

running 25:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. Short and easy, except it was tremendously muggy and generally not so nice out. I was thinking that a good hill for some intervals might be the lower trail (blue?) from the picnic table to the trail head. That'd be about 500 meters with a mix of some climb and some flat - and all in the shade.

Note

I just noticed that my DOMA archive automatically links up with 3D Rerun. I don't have any idea how long that's been in place, but it is pretty cool.

MTB cycling 45:00 [1]

MTB on the roads. I went downtown to watch some of the Tour of Lawrence criterium. It is always fun to watch the downtown race. The course was different this year and I think the lap was a little shorter.

Warm and humid. I decided an easy bike ride and being out in the weather for a few hours was enough for the day.

I shot a little video on my phone that gives a taste of the men's pro/1/2 race.

MTB cycling 30:00 [1]

MTB to the grocery store to get fixings for pizza. But, with a detour through campus to catch some of the Tour of Lawrence.

The first part of the course I went to was where Gene was course marshall. It was a good place to watch, so I hung out there, watched a bunch of laps, and chatted with Gene. I'd planned to go earlier and watch more of the race, but when I was about to leave home a thunderstorm hit. I don't mind rain but I try to avoid being out in the lightning.

That's Gene in the orange vest:

running 20:00 [2]

Some warm up and some control pick up.

When we arrived, Reed checked his phone and said the humidity was 84 percent.

Work commute.

Thursday Jun 26, 2014 #

running 50:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. I took it easy and felt ok. It is draining to run when it is so humid. Draining, but still nice to be out in the woods. I carried the map and looked at it now and then.

MTB cycling 40:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (10:00 @4)

Ulrik's Hill (MTB interval version) 4 x 2:30. Fun and especially pleasant when the sun was behind a cloud for a bit.

running 1:00:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. I took it slow. It was humid. No wind.

Monday Jun 23, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

cycling 30:00 [1]

This was kind of unusual. I had a meeting scheduled with someone at work. They asked if I could do the meeting on a bike ride on the levee. So instead of meeting in an office, we biked the levee and talked. It worked fine.

10 AM

MTB cycling 1:10:00 [1]

MTB on the bike paths and roads to/from a shelter in the state park.

running 35:00 [2]

Jogging on the trails at Clinton. I had a map and did a bit of kartlek. My legs felt tired as soon as I hit anything resembling a hill.

I got started a couple of hours later today than yesterday. So the heat was not so nice. On teh other hand, I got to enjoy a good cup of coffee and reading the newspaper before I left.

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

MTB on bike paths to/from Clinton. My legs felt pretty good biking.

running 1:35:00 [2]

Slow jogging on the trails at Clinton. The trails were in pretty good shape regarding mud and I didn't encounter any spider webs.

The humidity was draining even if the temp was only in the 80s.

I don't normally like running with music or podcasts, but I'm thinking it is good when the conditions are hot and humid and just generally unpleasant. So I listened to an hour of Per Frost's MTBPodden.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

After work I mowed. That was enough moving around in the heat for me.

Thursday Jun 19, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I spent about an hour this afternoon outdoors looking at sidewalks. It was hot and humid. It was not fun.

MTB cycling 40:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (10:00 @4)

MTB on roads and gravel roads (mini Ulrik's Hill) with 4 x ~2:30.

TJOC-ish weather. Not the brutal heat-radiating-from-the-ground afternoon heat, more the dripping humidity mid-morning heat.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging on West Campus. Pretty crummy out (hot, humid, windy).

I ran for a minute or two with Mary on the way back.

Monday Jun 16, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It felt like summer - hot, windy, humid.

I spent some time looking at my Burano map and playing with some course setting ideas. It will be interesting to see what the WOC map and courses look like.

10 AM

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

MTB on bike paths to/from Clinton Corps Office.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Easy jog on the trails at Clinton. The trails were a little wet in a spots, but not muddy. Last night's storm must also have blown away spider webs.

On the way back I listened to Per Frost's MTB podcast interview with Cecilia Thomasson.

orienteering race 17:08 [4] *** 3.38 km (5:04 / km) +26m 4:53 / km

Sprint course that Gene set at JCC.

Things went much better than at Antioch. Mostly navigation felt more normal, but also my breathing wasn't too bad.

The parking lot at JCC was the place where the nut job from Missouri killed two people.

5

running 20:00 [2]

Jogging to warm up. Picking up some controls after the race.

Friday Jun 13, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I mowed when I got home. I think I breathed in some grass or cottonwood seeds or something. When I came in I was hacking and coughing and it felt like something was stuck in my throat. Yuck.

1

Thursday Jun 12, 2014 #

running 20:00 [2]

Short grocery store run. My legs felt really good.

In the a.m. I watched some of the mixed sprint relay on YLE. I know a lot of people don't like the mixed sprint relay format, but I like it.

Wednesday Jun 11, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

MTB cycling 50:00 intensity: (35:00 @1) + (15:00 @4)

6 x 2:30-ish on the gravel hill known as Ulrik's Hill. My pacing was much better than it's been before. I'm getting a better feel for how hard I can go and maintain an honest effort.

1

Monday Jun 9, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. When I arrived at the bike rack, someone from work asked if I'd seen the weather forecast. I hadn't. It turned out that rain arrived in the early afternoon and it's been raining steadily since. I probably would have biked anyways, but I would have had a rain jacket for the trip home. As it was, I got drenched.

The rain wasn't cold, but the temp was in the upper 60s and even non-cold rain is a bit chilly. I worked a bit hard to stay warm.

I saw one traffic accident. Someone drove into the back of a car stopped at a stop sign.

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

Roads and bike paths to/from the trail at Clinton.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. The trails were in good shape, I'd expected them to be really muddy from yesterday's rain. A few trees blocked the trail in place. I think the trees must have fallen in the big wind last week.

It was fun to see a load of triathletes biking along the road. I think I read that they get something like 1200 or 1500 entrants. It was a great day for it - overcast, light wind and reasonable temps.

Note

Finished drafting the Gage Park map for the Sunflower State Games. I don't really enjoying drafting maps, but it is satisfying to finish.

PTOC meeting + picnic + sprint orienteering at Antioch Park. Fun course. I struggled to orienteer well, but it was a lot of fun. Mike Shifman set the course and got a lot of map reading out of a park that is quite small.

Short jog on West Campus.

We had some interesting weather today.

Wednesday Jun 4, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

MTB cycling 55:00 intensity: (40:00 @1) + (15:00 @4)

MTB on roads including 7 x a segment of Ulrik's Hill that takes roughly 2:30.

Mostly cloudy and a temp on about 83, so it wasn't too terrible (though humid).

My legs felt pretty good. I still struggle with pacing on a bike. Sometimes I catch myself going too slow and sometime too fast, but I have a hard time just hitting a consistent effort.

2

Tuesday Jun 3, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Hot on the way home (and humid and windy).

running 20:00 [2]

Running to get groceries. I don't like heat.

My new hydration pack is good for running, too. But it is a little small for grocery shopping.

1

Monday Jun 2, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute and nothing else (unless you count watching the latest episode of Svett och Etikett).

Note

Also, I met on snake on the single track today.

Note

9 AM

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

MTB on the roads and bike paths to/from Clinton.

MTB cycling 1:15:00 [2]

Single track at Clinton. This might be the longest of single track that I've done at Clinton. I'm slowly getting more technically competent (and better at getting my feet unclipped before tipping over). My technique comes and goes when I'm biking. I guess it is a combination of concentration and tiredness.
