running 1:00:00 [2]

At Woodridge with a map (5 meter contours, no trails, some vegetation). I read the map most of the time, but it wouldn't count as orienteering training.

I'm wondering if we could use Woodridge for a day of an A-meet? It is a smallish area and not very challenging (no more/less than any areas around here).

I've also started a new version of a map at Woodridge using OOMapper and using some of the stuff I've learned about lidar since the last time I mapped Woodridge. I've also found some nice air photos that'll make things a lot easier than the last time I mapped Woodridge when the only photos I had were leaf on 1 meter pixels.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Rainy trail run at Clinton to replace the cancelled Double Ogg PTOC event.

The weather changed very quickly during the trail run. The temp dropped from about 68 to 59. It went from feeling warmish/summer rain/humid, to chilly late fall rain. And it changed in a very short time. I can't recall such a quick change that wasn't associated with a big thunderstorm or hailstorm.

Fun run.

Picking up controls at SMP from the cancelled meet. I figured it'd be just 3 of us, but there were a bunch (Dick, Scott, Reed, Sev, Nick, Mike, Paul) so it went very quickly.

While I was in KC I also visited the newly opened REI store. I like that we've finally got an REI reasonably close.

MTB cycling 1:30:00 [1]

MTB riding on the river trails. Fun and very comfortable weather (low 70s, low humidity). I met Larry Spray on the trail. We chatted for a couple of minutes. He asked something about my bike and told me something about his bikes. Cyclists must have some sort of equipment-gene that I lack.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Longish slow run on the trails at Clinton from the beach parking lot. I felt neither good nor bad, just sort of so-so. Breathing wasn't really good. I think that's from allergies.

2

I also saw a note that Ulrik won the DM (Danish Champs, I think) in Biathlon Orienteering. Add to that Jenny winning the relay district champs and it seems clear. Training in Lawrence is good preparation for European orienteers.

Work commute. I'd planned to do a short jog after work. But, I'm tired.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

The trip home was about half dry and half very heavy rain and high wind. When I got home the power was out. I don't miss a lot about living in KC, but I do miss KCP&L. We have a lot more power outages with Westar.

running 25:00 [2]

A short jog in the rain on West Campus. I tried to keep an eye on the weather and made sure I was home before the thunder and lightning got closer.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The rain was fairly heavy in the morning. It was also an difficult weather for gear. The temp was about 60. T-shirt and shorts would be a bit cold with the rain. Jacket and rain pants was a bit warm.

running 20:00 [2]

Grocery store run.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. This was the first day when I actually felt chilly. The temp stayed in the low 60s all day and if felt cooler later in the day. The trip home was in a light mist and short sleeves. It will feel very nice when I have to actually wear a jacket.

running 25:00 [2]

Slow jog on West Campus. I found a golf ball.

MTB cycling 1:40:00 [1]

MTB on the river trails. I was downtown when I realized I'd left my helmet at home. I went back to get it since I didn't want to smash my head on a rock or a tree. The sandy trail was more sandy than the last time I biked it. The sandy stuff wasn't much fun. The rest of the trail was in good shape.

One of the things I like about riding the MTB is that I'm so bad at the technique that I seem to improve every time I ride. That's satisfying.

I had the map on my map board and read it now and then.

I need to get a new map holder (or maybe just a new map board for the current holder). I wonder if I can buy a decent map holder in the U.S.

Note

Spent a bit of time today drafting maps. I haven't enjoyed drafting maps, but I find OpenOrienteering Mapper much nice to use than OCAD. It might just be my imagination.

One project is a map at Milford Lake that will be, I hope, used for adventure races and MTBO.

The other is a remote map. Just for fun... https://twitter.com/okansas/status/379009790585753...

Also did a little work on the Burano map.

Work commute. The trip to the office was in a light rain. It felt very nice.

After work Mary and I ate at La Parilla. I think the 16th anniversary is traditionally the "chips and salsa anniversary."

Note

Didn't get out to do any running or biking. I started the day slowly - coffee, read the paper, etc - and by the time I felt like getting out the temp was in the mid 90s and getting warmer.

I stayed in the A.C. almost all day.

I did some work on the Milford map and started a new little project. I've always been meaning to try to make a remote map. I've also been playing around with Open Orienteering Mapper and I knew I could use OSM as a basemap/template. I've started mapping Burano with OSM as a basemap. I'm not sure I'll keep going, but it has been interesting. There are lots of photos of Burano, including some nice 360 degree panoramas, that help figure out what's going on.

MTB cycling 2:55:00 [1]

MTB riding and looking at the base map at Milford State Park. I'll use the GPS tracks to get a rough map ready for the guy at Fort Riley who wants to do some orienteering-like activities.

I got out of the house pretty early, but it as already about 80F when I started. And it got warmer. The temp was 96F when I finished.

I started with the trails that I thought would be technicallyh more difficult and ended with the trails that would be easiest. That was a reasonable plan, but it meant I was in the sun (on the easy trails) when it was warm and in the shade (more difficult trails) when it was cooler. I got a bit too much sun.

Oh, lots of spider webs.

Fun, but I'm tired now.

Jogging (mostly in Burcham Park) right after work. It was hot. It has been pretty nice for a few days, but it is getting hot again.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute with no flat tires.

Tuesday Sep 3, 2013 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Very pleasant on the way to work. The temp was in the 50s.

The trip home was fine until the last 300 meters when I got a flat. That's 3 flats in the last 3 rides. As best I can tell, the flats are unrelated. The first was a tear of the place where the valve stem met the tube. That tube was shot. I put in a new tube that flatted on Saturday. That seemed to be a puncture through the side of the tire. The flat today seemed to be in a different spot (relative to the valve and the tire) and a different type of flat. This time it looked more like a seam splitting. Maybe the tube was just crappy. I'm pretty careful after a flat to check the tire for any objects (like thorns) so that I don't get a flat from the same source. Maybe it is just bad luck.

running 1:05:00 [2]

A nice change in the weather. The temp was down to about 60 last night and the air is much drier. I jogged (slowly) on the trails at Clinton, starting from the beach parking lot.

Lots of MTB riders out and a few runners. The MTB riders included a lot of kids, which is a bit unusual.

MTB cycling 1:30:00 [1]

MTB on the river trail. The far end of the trail was muddy from the rain earlier in the morning, so I stuck to the middle part of the trail and spent a little time on the levee. The storm also knocked down some branches, so I had a few places where I had to get off the bike to get through some of the branches.

I saw Mary out there running.
