MTB cycling 1:15:00 [1]

On the trails at Clinton + a bit on the road to get back to the car. I also explored the west campground a bit. It could make for an interesting (if small) area to practice MTB O'. I was riding pretty well (for me) and working steadily. I saw Mary out there.

running 30:00 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (20:00 @4)

As soon as I got back to the car, I got going on a short run. I did 20 at an honest effort as (70/20s). My legs were tired from the biking and the 20 minutes an an honest effort felt tougher than it should have.

other 30:00 [1]

Other was putting out and taking in controls from today's event on the new Daisy Hill map. I did a mix of running and biking. I managed to hold four controls and stands while biking (and without crashing).

A bit under 20 starts with maybe 30 people (some groups). Pink Socks and Gina made it, which was cool.

Biking to the start and from the finish on the river trails.

MTB O' training on the river trails map. Fun. I'm definitely getting better at both biking and reading the map on the map holder.

The one-way trails limit the course setting options.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

A highlight of the work day was a visit to the old Borders Books. The library is going to move there when the new library is under construction. I had a chance to explore the building a bit now that the city is leasing it. It was interesting. Borders left a lot of junk in the building when they closed.

cycling 45:00 [1]

A short MTB ride on the trails at Clinton. I was working on keeping my arms and shoulders relaxed. I think I have a tendency to get tense and that isn't good.

It was a really nice evening to be out and the trails were empty.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

Nothing more today. I need to put finishing touches on maps for Saturday's orienteering on the new Daisy Hill map. I figured that if I went for a run, I'd end up feeling tired and stressed when I was getting the last things ready.

I bought a small frame pump for my MTB over my lunch hour.

Note to self - remember to double check clue sheets and SI unit numbers BEFORE sending maps to the printer.

running 40:00 [2]

Running on the river trail. The highlight of the run was spotting a pileated woodpecker. I've seen one at Knob Noster and Wyandotte. But, I'd never seen one in Lawrence.

Another highlight was the nice fall colors:

MTB cycling 15:00 [1]

This was a dud. I'd ridden a bit less than 10 minutes when the front wheel felt strange - almost like the wheel was sliding in the sand on a turn. A quick glance at the tire and it was losing air. I turned around and gently rode back to the car, keeping an eye on the mushy tire. I had a spare tube with me, but not pump.

More or less the normal work commute.

I stopped on the way home to take a quick look at a spot on the Daisy Hill map.

cycling 20:00 [1]

Picked up my bike at Sunflower after work and biked home.

running 45:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. Nice evening.

Note

I read the night orienteering thread. I'd never really thought of night orienteering as a different discipline in need of separate rules. I'd always just thought of it as orienteering in a different environment (sort of like "rain orienteering" or "cold orienteering") rather than a different discipline (like ski or MTB orienteering). Night orienteering is just orienteering when it is dark.

running 45:00 [1]

Jogging around and making some changes to the map at Rockhaven. We're going to use Rockhaven for the January 1 OK event. It needs some work but is further along than I realized. I was out for 90 minutes jogging mostly, but also stopping frequently to add notes.

I feel like doing more (like a run and a MTB ride), but even after 10+ hours of sleep I'm not exactly feeling normal.

Saturday Sep 22, 2012 #

Note

Feeling worn out after dinner. I don't think it was the training, it is that I'm not yet fully recovered from whatever has been causing me trouble this week. I'll go to sleep early. That should help.
2 PM

running 55:00 intensity: (35:00 @2) + (20:00 @4)

Trail run at Clinton with 20 minutes at an honest effort (as 70/20s). Fun but I'm not in very good shape and my allergies seemed to be a bit of trouble. Very nice day and lots of people out on the trails.

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

Trails and a bit of roads at Clinton immediately after finishing the run (and changing and getting the bike out of the car). I did 10+ minutes of pushing my technique to the very edge in some rocky/rooty areas. I managed to make it through some rough stuff that often gives me difficulty.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Short and easy ride with Mary. I felt a bit off all day, but also felt better and better as the day went. I'm thinking I'll be ok this weekend and recovered from whatever has been bugging me.

Wednesday Sep 19, 2012 #

Note

Something was wrong all day. I was sleepy and felt crummy. I made it through the conference but was feeling really strange by the end. The rest of the day was devoted to travel from the Newseum to the hotel to get my bag to the metro to Reagan airport to KC to home. I managed to squeeze in a short visit to the National Gallery to look at some Raphael paintings.

Tuesday Sep 18, 2012 #

Note

Long day. Good conference.

MTB cycling 30:00 [1]

Short ride at Clinton to start the day. Will be traveling most of the day.

I fell down at one point. That surprised me a bit.

1

Note

Took a bit of a walk after checking in at the hotel. Sitting in an airplane seems to make me left hip sore.

Mary, Jenny and I went to Perry. Nice run. I carried the current version of the in-progress map and read it a fair amount.

MTB cycling 30:00 [1]

MTB on the trails at Clinton. My technique felt a bit unsure. I had some troubles but I also had some sections that went really well. After 20 minutes, I parked the bike.

Kartlek on a course Mary designed for me on the trails. I worked to keep concentration and to test some different ideas. I worked on catching my mind wandering and getting back to concentrating. Fun. I returned to my bike.

MTB cycling 30:00 [1]

Back to the car - about half on single track and half on roads. It felt strange to make the transition from running on trails to biking on trails.

Testing the current version of the Daisy Hill course. I checked out a couple of routes that Mary didn't take. I ran a bit extra, too. I think it'll be ok. The last uphill will be a chore.

Note

At work today I learned that we have a security camera pointed at the back door where my bike was parked. The building maintenance guy reviewed the video and found some interesting stuff. First, he was amused to watch me find the bike and then figure out what was wrong with it. It was kind of funny to watch. Second, he found out what happened.

A guy was delivering some boxes of supplies to the building. He had a cart with wheels on it and a pile of boxes. He rolled by my bike and after a few steps the cart tipped on a curb. All of the boxes fell. The guy then picked up a box and flung it at my bike. The building maintenance guy is contacted the vendor who was delivering the supplies.

I'd figured that someone had accidentally bashed my bike, maybe while moving a car. It hadn't really occurred to me that someone had attacked my bike.

The damage was pretty extensive. The wheel was out of true and the shop trued it up fairly well, but warned me that the wheel wouldn't last long. Rebuilding the wheel will cost about $160.
5 PM

running 40:00 [2]

Jogging on the river trail. Warmer than I expected.

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

On the river trail. Same as my last ride on the river trail - working on minimizing braking. Fun and still seeing progress.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

My bike was parked at work and seems to have been bashed by a car. When I left work, the bike was tipped over and kind of smushed against the bike rack. The front wheel was bent enough that it wouldn't turn until I opened the brakes. I walked the bike over to Sunflower where they trued the wheel, warning me that it was true but it was definitely weaker than it was. So, I might need to get a new wheel soon.

The shop also told me that the fork on my bike has been recalled. I'll need to bring it in for a new fork.

Ran to the Hy Vee and got food for dinner (red onion and goat cheese quesadillas).

I'd planned a run but ended up mowing the yard and being water girl. The grass needed mowing.

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

MTB at Clinton. I rode the trail to the beach and then took the road back to the Corps Office. I was able to ride two spots that I haven't made it through before - so my technique is definitely improving.

Note

About 2 hours of field checking at Daisy Hill.

PTOC sprint at Longview Lake Dam (a new map). Jenny beat me by 5 seconds. She runs faster than I do up hills.

I ran with the GoPro on the chest mount. Click the little globe for the video + GPS track + O' map.

running 10:00 [2]

Jogging around to warm up.
3 PM

MTB cycling 1:30:00 [1]

MTB on the river trails. I was trying to be smoother on the trail - less braking in the corners and pedaling through turns I usually coast through. I think I've got some time to gain by being smoother, especially if I can brake less and avoid having to get back up to speed.

I also spent a bit of time - maybe 10 minutes - reading the MTBO map, working on glancing at the map and quickly looking at the right location. It is a bit strange to not "thumb" a map, but it doesn't take much work to make it pretty easy to read a map without having it in my hand.

I got back to the car in time to hear the last play of the KU football game on the radio. I should have stayed out another minute or two.

MTB on the trails at Clinton State Park. I got tired near the end (heat didn't help) and was struggling with the rocky parts of the trails. I'm getting better, but I still struggle when I'm tired. After about 55 minutes it seems like my technique is much worse.

I had a map on the map board and looked at it off and on.

6 PM

orienteering 35:00 [2]

A bit of O' technique at Clinton Overlook. I'd designed a course with most of the map whited-out. The design allowed you to find all the controls without going into the woods (which are still thick and summery).

We had a nice group - Pete, Mary, MeanGene, Jenny and Fletcher.

Hot and muggy.

running 15:00 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (5:00 @3) + (5:00 @4)

After running the course, Fletcher, Pete, Jenny and I ran up to Sanders Mound and back to the Corps Office.

Sunday Sep 2, 2012 #

Note

No training, but I spent a couple of hour field checking at Daisy Hill. It was warm. I made some good progress. It seems like there are days when mapping goes quick and easy. The area in Jayhawk Towers is tricky. It could make some interesting orienteering, but the mapping is difficult. I considered creating a new symbol "mostly paved area with mixed grass, trees and stairways" (something like open with scattered trees but with pavement shaded dots).

I also watched more of the NORT TV coverage. Orienteering TV coverage has come a long way in the last few years.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Trail run at the Perry trails. It was warm and humid (mid 80s) but not too terrible. It'd have been nicer if I hadn't filled a couple of water bottles and then left them on the kitchen counter (had a 3/4 full water bottle in the car, so I carried that).

I ran the trails and took notes to indicate the MTB O' trail level. This might be our most interesting MTB O' area once I update the map to MTB O' standards.

I used the map a lot, but wouldn't consider this an O' session.

I was surprised that the trails weren't muddy. I'd figured the rain would have made the muddy, but I guess the ground is so dry that the water sinks in quickly. Also the sun coming out dried things.

MTB Orienteering 35:00 [1] ***
8c

Since the trails weren't muddy, I did some MTB O' practice. I sketched a quick course on trails I hadn't already run on and rode the course. By the end I was tired and dehydrated.

If Mary had been around, she'd have told me to drink a Coke. So I stopped in Perry and bought a Coke and drank it. That helped pick me up a bit.

4 (run + bike + over 90 minutes + some O' technique)
