cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I encountered some strange drivers on the way home. KU has a home game tonight.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I got tired of the headwind on the way to the office.

running 40:00 intensity: (27:08 @2) + (12:52 @4)

I did a headlamp run at Clinton. Initially my plan was to just do an easy 60 minutes. But, I decided I'd better do my test run before the end of November. I skipped October because I was sick so much.

I did the test in 12:52. That's 4 seconds off my PR from September. I certainly felt a lot better this month.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Cold (17F) on the way to work. I was surprised to see 6 other cyclists out.

I was pleasantly surprised at how my legs felt. I'd expected them to feel tired, but they actually felt great.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row (as prep for watching the Giants game).

Note

3d Re-run with headcam video from last weekend's event at Wyandotte.

It only shows the first 43 minutes of the course, but that's more than enough to get a sense of the terrain and course.

You can see Mary in action if you go to the 8th control (in 3d Re-run, put your mouse over the GPS track, hold down the Ctrl key and use a left mouse click (that'll move the video and GPS dot to the location).

running 2:00:00 [2]

Long, easy trail run at Rockcrusher. I carried the latest basemap and read it quite a bit, especially for the first 90 minutes. The basemap included vegetation estimates based on the object height data run through OL Laser. The vegetation is interesting - it will be useful for field checking, but it takes some interpretation. I also need to do some more experiments with settings in OL Laser.

Note

I spent more time experimenting with Lidar data today and managed to make sense of the file names for Boone County, MO (home of Dan Meenehan). PTOC has had a sketchy map of Rock Bridge State Park for years. The map wasn't actually made by an orienteer. It isn't the best. But, the park has some super interesting karst terrain. Here's some of it:

Note

I did some field checking on the KU campus map. I made some of the most necessary updates for the Kansas Champs. I should have done this yesterday when it was in the 60s. Today it was 40s, cloudy and windy.

I timed my field checking to overlap with Patrick and Gina's test running of the courses. I watched them at a couple of locations to see how they'd manage the map at a few places where it is a bit tricky.

We should print the course maps at 1:4,000 to make it easier to spot some of the small passages.

After the mapping, it was time for lunch at Esquina with Patrick, Gina, Madeline, Clemintine, Pete and Mary. The Pozole was outstanding.

running 50:00 [2]

I ran at Rockrcusher and made a few stops to add some features to the map. It was fun. I think Rockcrusher has some of the nicest woods to run in around here. Of course, it also has some really crappy forest.

running 40:00 [2]

Jogging around Mary's draft Kansas Champs course on the KU Campus plus a little bit extra. I also stopped a couple of times to make a few notes about places I need to go back and do some map changes.

Note

An update on the new Missouri lidar data...I've figured out how to find the tile scheme for Clay and Platte counties. I've also figured out how to make the most of the lidar data files that are so big that when I try to do much with them in OL Laser I get a memory problem on my old PC.

I haven't figured out the tile naming scheme for Boone County. It'd be good to figure that out because having a good basemap of Rock Bridge State Park would be really cool. There's a section of the park with some really nice forest and karst terrain - with a good basemap and a weekend of work, you could have a nice little map. But, I need to figure out the tiling scheme first.

running 1:20:00 [2]

Easy jogging, mostly on trails, at Clinton State Park.

I carried various maps/basemaps. I spent some time comparing the vegetation to my OL Laser+lidar vegetation map:

http://twitter.com/#!/okansas/status/1397728864739...

The approach shows some promise for making it easier to show different levels of light green in the typical Kansas forest. I think some tweaking of teh settings (maybe reduce the "ground tolerance to less than 0.8)

I took a couple of 20 minute breaks from running to do a little bit of fieldchecking. Most of the fieldchecking was also an OL Laser experiment. I used OL Laser to automatically generate cliffs. It seemed to work well. OL Laser picked up things that weren't cliffs (mostly earth banks or broken cliffs that are better mapped as boulder field or rocky ground).

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Chilly and foggy on the way to work. Clear and warm-ish on the way home.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Note

I discovered this today:

http://maps.wustl.edu/mo_lidar_data/

Laser scan data from Clay and Platte counties (plus some other parts of Missouri). This could be very, very good news for the future of Kansas City area orienteering maps.

I've begun playing around with some of the data from Platte County and have learned a few things. The LAS files seem to be a lot bigger than the files I'm used to for Kansas. I need to figure out a way to figure out which tiles cover which parts of the county. I've got a map showing all of the tiles and the county boundaries, but no other detail. I wish I understood computer stuff better than I do.

PTOC red course at Wyandotte. Dan W. set the course and it was his best effort to date.

The map is a bit strange, but generally consistent (assuming you're not too stressed when you come across an unmapped trail).

I had some trouble breathing, but felt like I was moving ok and working hard. I ended up 4 minutes behind Joe B. I don't think I'll be beating Joe very often - but I'm not going to throw in the towel yet (and I think I'm undefeated at night).

Late lunch with Pete and Mary at Arthur Bryant's after the run.

Easy jogging to warm up.

Note

KU student TV covered Thursday's Geo Awareness Week event. I think they did a good job:

running 1:00:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. I carried the map. I set my Garmin to beep based on distances - 400 meters, then 130 meters, and so on. During the 400 meter segments, I read the map in great detail. During the 130 meter segments, I just jogged and didn't look at the map. I need to get out there sometime and tweak the trails. I put the trails in through a mix of sketching + GPS on the contours. But with the full laser scan data and OL Laser, I've got better base material and the trail could use some minor changes (here and there the trail will be on the wrong side of a tree, for example).

Friday Nov 18, 2011 #

Note

At the airport and starting to travel home. I'd hoped to get in a bit more than 20 minutes of jogging this week. That didn't happen. Work went really well, though.

Tuesday Nov 15, 2011 #

running 20:00 [2]

I drew a sprintish course on the "downtown walking map" and jogged around the course first thing in the morning. Fun.

Monday Nov 14, 2011 #

Note

Some travel problem yesterday meant too little sleep and more travel today. Resting today. If I wake up early a morning jog tomorrow is possible.

Sunday Nov 13, 2011 #

running 1:00:00 intensity: (40:00 @2) + (20:00 @4)

Trail run at Clinton with the map in my hand. I also did 20 at an honest effort as 70/20s. Felt ok but I've definitely taken a step back since 6-7 weeks ago.

Note

This caught my eye on a discussion:

the qualification standards should be raised for juniors to compete at JWOC and WUOC. There is of course the counter argument that we need to expose as many juniors as possible to the higher level of competition but with that philosophy we water down the juniors we send by not holding them to a higher standard. Low qualification standards reward ineptitude and cost OUSA money.

I hadn't ever thought of JWOC and WUOC as opportunities to expose people to a higher level of competition. I'd always thought of both events as chance to inspire someone.

If it were my money that went to funding JWOC, WUOC and WOC teams, I think the ones I'd be least likely to want to spend money on would be the older WOC team members - except for those who'd demonstrated an especially high level. I'd be perfectly happy spending on younger orienteers who weren't putting in much training effort on the chance that they'd get inspired.

running 40:00 [2]

Headlamp run at the "Nature Park." Slow.

Monday Nov 7, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. "It was a dark and stormy night" for the trip home. I remembered a rain jacket but forgot to pack my rain pants. It seems like I've been doing stupid things that last few days.

Note

Pretty amusing story (and sad, too) about Kansas state government:

running 1:10:00 [2]

Jogging at Woodridge. I carried the map and read it a lot. I stopped several time to make a few notes for updating the map. I was out for 2 hours.

Interesting....

Viser statistikk på 3000 meter på Norske VM-løpere i orientering 1978-2011 (ikke "friidrettsløpere"). Trålet gjennom friidrettsstatistikk.

80-tallet: samlet rundt 8.30

Større redsel for skader? Større status på skogsorientering i Norge?
Norge som o-nasjon prioriterer ikke sprint på linje med andre nasjoner?

PTOC red course at Kill Creek. Most of the time I lost was from being lazy about pushing through the deep grass.

running 40:00 [2]

Picking up controls at Kill Creek. My legs were tired, especially when I first started. Once I warmed up a bit and got moving, my legs were still tired, but it wasn't a chore to jog.

I've heard some talk about developing a trail network on West Campus. It is a great idea. I really hope it happens. I think you could build from the little bits of trail already there.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It was a long day at the office. I didn't get home until 10:15. I would have been later if the "Occupy" folks had decided to comment on my work.
