cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 35:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (10:00 @4)

Jogging on West Campus. I put in ten minutes at an honest effort. It was a struggle. I've had some allergy trouble and breathing was a chore. I'm sure I wasn't moving well.

Wednesday Sep 29, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The work commute and nothing else. I did get some stuff taken care of - laundry and grocer shopping.

Tuesday Sep 28, 2010 #

cycling 25:00 [1]

Less than usual bike commute. I took my car to the shop, then biked from the shop to the office, then biked home after work.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Just a bit on the landboat. I got home a bit later than planned as I was at work until a bit after 6:30.

Monday Sep 27, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It was the first day in a long time that I had to wear gloves and a jacket and it felt GREAT.

cycling 55:00 [1]

On the bike trails with Mary. We took it pretty easy. Nice to ride along, chatting and enjoying the weather.

running 1:50:00 [2]

I put in a nice, easy jog on the trails at Perry State Park. I carried the contour map (2.5 meter lidar contours). I read the map quite a bit.

We should give some thought to mapping the area. On the plus side: the forest is better than average for Kansas; the trail network is dense (give you some route choice options and chances to take a break from running in the forest); we've never had a map of the area; and it might be good to have a map near Topeka. On the minus side: the area doesn't have any toilets and you have to pay to park; and the area is a bit of a drive (35 minutes from my house versus 10 for Clinton S.P.).

Note

Spent most of the day in a hotel conference room. That is draining. Among other things, we decided our next meeting will be in Texas in late February.

Thursday Sep 23, 2010 #

running 20:00 [2]

A travel day with 20 minutes on the hotel treadmill before going to sleep.

cycling 1:00 [0]

A short test ride of the pedal hopper. The city doesn't currently allow the PH to go on Mass St. I think the concern is that it moves to slowly. But the guy who owns the PH says that it goes faster than they thought and he'd like to be able to use it on the downhill sections of Mass (e.g. south bound from 8th to 9th). So a lawyer and the City Clerk went for a test ride and I tagged along. It was pretty nice.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Mary called right at the end of the day and suggested meeting downtown for dinner at Esquina. So we did.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Tuesday Sep 21, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I worked a lot today. The good is that I got a lot done. The bad is that I'm worn out (mentally mostly).

I downloaded the new version of OL Laser. If you've got some raw lidar data and can make sense of Swedish, you should check it out:

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I pushed a bit on the trip home, but only a bit.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Sunday Sep 19, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

I'll credit myself with some biking. I biked to/from the event, put out all the controls by bike and picked up most of the controls by bike.

We had a good turnout and the event seemed to be well received. I don't think any of the students showed up (though one would have if church hadn't run long). We had a good school group from Shawnee Heights (a rural district between Topeka and Lawrence).

I had a nice chat with McCleary. I hadn't seen him in a few years. He seemed pleased to see Eelgrassman orienteering.

After everyone was in, it was time for the PTOC summer series prizes. Mary and I won. The prizes were brownies. Nice. PTOC gave prizes for the top 3. The Joneski and Barret families took all of the prizes (though I think there were enough brownies for everyone).

running 1:05:00 intensity: (50:00 @2) + (15:00 @4)

Mary and I went to Clinton SP to run on the trails. I carried a map and looked at it a bit.

After about 40 minutes, I put in 15 minutes at an honest effort (70/20s). It felt good to have done and felt pretty good until the last couple of minutes.

The temperature has warmed up a bit and it was humid. Some storms popped up the last hour or so. Maybe that'll cool it off a bit.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute. I worked pretty hard on the way home. I was riding home pretty late because I had dinner at Mom's after work, then Mary dropped me at City Hall on our way back home. Dinner was nice. My uncle Bert was in town. I haven't seen him in a few years. He'd been in Kansas City giving some sort of lecture about the history of science and medicine.

Thursday Sep 16, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

As I was biking home on Jayhawk Blvd I heard someone yell "Auditors Rule."

Wednesday Sep 15, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

A wet commute. I raced the storm on the way to work. I called it a tie. I beat the heavy rain but had a few minutes of light rain. I was drenched on the trip home. There was a small gap in the storm near the end of the day and Bobbie suggested I leave early and make it home before the storm hit (she was checking the radar). I'd have done that...except I was in the middle of extracting some data from a big database and it was running. I didn't want to leave it overnight and didn't want to stop it when it was getting close to being done.

rowing 25:00 [1]

On the land boat. Felt pretty good.

Tuesday Sep 14, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. On the way in, Craig W. blazed by me. Well, that wasn't good. So, I caught up to him and we rode together for just under a mile when our routes split.

I encountered some nut-job drivers on the way home.
6 PM

cycling 25:00 [1]

Biking to/from the Robinson Gym map.

orienteering 10:00 [2] ***

I jogged around the beginner course for Sunday's NOD event.

I came very close to doing nothing this evening. I didn't feel motivated. I felt sleepy (still do). But, I got myself out the door and that's a good thing.

Small steps.

Monday Sep 13, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Back to Lawrence. Back to the usual work commute.

rowing 25:00 [1]

A bit of time on the land boat. Thought about a run but had some strange aches and pains in my leg and felt sleepy.

Saturday Sep 11, 2010 #

running 20:00 [2]

Easy jog on the streets of Arnold MD. I carried an OpenOrienteeringMap with me for entertainment and to find my way.

Wednesday Sep 8, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Perfect conditions today. Maybe that's why there were so many other bike commuters out today.

rowing 25:00 [1]

Laundry, cooking, packing, etc...decided it'd be a day off from running but that I could easily get in some rowing while the laundry was in the washer. Now that we've removed all the junk from the basement, it is a much nicer place to exercise. The posters on the walls are inspiring.

Tuesday Sep 7, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The normal bike commute. I pushed pretty hard on the way home and enjoyed the comfortable weather.

I'm sitting at home watching tonight's CC meeting. One of the commissioners proposed the idea of contracting out the solid waste service. I released a performance audit about solid waste earlier this year - not looking at contracting out - and it will be interesting to see how this all works out. I think the CC is planning to create a task force to look into the issues and make recommendations. I'm not always a fan of task forces, but I think that addressing the issues surrounding solid waste a suitable for a task force in this case. Enough said.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Mary and I went out to Clinton. I was out for just under 2 hours. A bit over 90 was running. A bit under 30 was jog/stop/walk (repeated) as I explored a bit of the OL Laser "lutning" image of some forested terrain. The lutning image does a good job of getting some detail that is useful for fieldchecking. It was easy to pick out the cedar trees (usually alone or in small clumps). A fair number of individual trees show up, though it takes some practice to pick out which trees show up and which don't.

Sunday Sep 5, 2010 #

11 AM

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Biking to/from Clinton. On the way home I took a detour to check out the area between the Wakarusa and the golf course. It might be ok for a little sprint map.

running 30:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (15:00 @4)

Trail run - carrying the map and looking at it a few times - at Clinton. I put in 15 minutes at an honest effort (as 70/20s). I wasn't moving fast, but it was a good thing to do.

Saturday Sep 4, 2010 #

1 PM

running 25:00 [2]

Running to/from the start and a little bit extra. Felt slow and heavy. I guess I am slow and heavy.

orienteering 25:00 [3] ***
15c

I whipped up a new basemap of the Daisy Hill section of the KU Campus. I used QuickGrid to create the contours and OL Laser to create some detail. I settled on the OL Laser "lutning" image + the contours as the map for today's run.

I drew a course that would get me around the map a bit and would give me a chance to get a sense of how well the lutning image works.

I was quite happy with the information the lutning image provides. I also created an intensity image that will add a lot more detail (e.g. it does a good job with the roads, sidewalks and parking lots).

Note

This is cool. Lawrence named a top Triathlon town:

http://www.lawrenceks.org/web_based_agendas/2010/0...

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Super-nice conditions. It was cool enough in the a.m. that I wore a light vest. Then I had a nice tail wind blowing me home.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

The basement is a bit more inspiring now that we've unloaded all of the boxes and added some orienteering posters to the walls.

Thursday Sep 2, 2010 #

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

The work commute plus a bit.

The trip home was a bit dramatic - thunder and lightning approaching, rain starting and a nice tail wind to push me home. It would have been nice if the drivers on campus weren't so nutty.

running 20:00 [1]

Spent about 40 minutes shuffling around the Robinson map to check out control locations.

Note

I had a few minutes to play around with the beta version of OL Laser. It works and looks interesting.

cycling 45:00 [1]

While AN and TG where cycling around the French countryside, I was riding to/from work. The a.m. trip was in some serious rain.

I felt tired all day. The plan was to do a run, but I've decided that I'll rest instead.
