cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. With the holiday and driving to work last Tuesday, it has been a week since I biked to work.

They're doing some road work near the office and my route on the way home involved jumping a couple of curbs, squeezing between cars in a line, and going through a gravel lot and up an alley.

orienteering 40:00 [2]

Night orienteering practice on the in-progress overlook map at Clinton. Very low key. I'd just pick out a spot, jog to it, then pick out another spot, jog to it, and so on. I stuck to trails mostly and regretted the times I went into the thick, crappy forest. I got coated in stick tights right at the very end. Fun, though.

Sunday Nov 29, 2009 #

running 35:00 [2]

Jogging to/from the start on West Campus plus a bit extra.

orienteering 35:00 [2]

Jogging the draft course. Gene and I started out a minute or so apart and met up every few controls to discuss the course. Fun.

My legs felt icky.

rowing 20:00 [1]

A few minutes on the land boat. If I had a ping pong table and someone to play, I would have played ping pong.

Saturday Nov 28, 2009 #

Note

Mary and I went for a walk as part of our trail mapping project. Nice. Warm weather and fun to explore a new area.

After our walk, I went out to Clinton overlook and did about 1.5 hours of fieldchecking. I spent most of the time in an especially crappy section of the area - mostly just calling it all fight and hoping to never venture into it again.

Friday Nov 27, 2009 #

running 1:10:00 [2]

Jogging on trails at Clinton SP. Most of the time I was going back and forth along the straight hillside just south of the campground. Not very nice for orienteering, but plenty of trails along that hillside.

Really warm weather - must have been lower 60s (and plenty of sun).

Thursday Nov 26, 2009 #

orienteering 50:00 [1]

Running and mapping at Clinton overlook. Most of the time I was just looking at runnability in the forest, and mostly I just mapped it as slow run. I discovered some more trail re-routing. They must have done the work very recently - the trail wasn't there during the trail race Sunday morning.

Tuesday Nov 24, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 15:00 [2]

Jogging around a bit to warm up and back to the house.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Legs felt a bit tired.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Some time on the land boat.

Sunday Nov 22, 2009 #

running 55:00 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (40:00 @4)

Trail Hawks race at Clinton. The course began at the Corps parking lot at the overlook, went over Sanders Mound, the followed the upper trail to Lake Henry, returned on the lower trail, then back over Sanders Mound and finish at the parking area. This was a pretty tough course.

I decided to warm up on the course. I started quite easy and picked up the pace as I went. It was an honest effort.

My legs are now sore and tired. Time for some recovery.

Note

Wow, just noticed that I did 10 hours last week. A fair amount was work commuting on the bike - easy stuff. But, still 10 hours is more than I've done in quite a while.

Note

Tired old man on the last hill at today's race:

running 10:00 [1]

A bit of jogging to warm up.

PTOC red course at Kill Creek. The tall grass wasn't quite as bad as usual and the course setter - Paul, I think - was nice to us (except for having to cross the creek twice!). I lost a little time at 9 where I had some trouble making sense of what was going on with the hillside and rocks. As I left 9 I heard a whistle and went to check it out. Kids playing, not an injury. At least it didn't cost me much time.

Nice post-run pizza and salad in DeSoto with Mary, Reta, Marv, Patrick, and Pete.

PTOC night score O' (more like a control picking course) at Bonner Park. Bonner is pretty much entirely open, mowed grass.

Good turnout for PTOC today - maybe 40+ for the night O' and 176 at Kill Creek.

Here's a comparison of my Tesla (left) versus Mary's Tesla knock-off (right). The photo makes the difference look bigger than it looked in real life.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commuting through town at 5:15 a.m. is really nice. No traffic. Very quiet. Except it isn't much fun to get up so early.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Just a little bit of time on the land boat.

I'd originally planned to do a bit of night O' at Clinton. But I was tired.

Mary's new Tesla knock off lamp arrived. It looks like a good light. It doesn't seem to have the same quality/craftsmanship as the Tesla, but the light it puts out is Tesla-quality.

cycling 45:00 [1]

No rain. No snow. Hardly worth riding my bike.

rowing 20:00 [2]

A bit of time on the land boat. I worked a bit hard for some of the time.

Tuesday Nov 17, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Another fine commute - temp in the mid 30s, sleet on the way to work and rain on the way home. I was perfectly dressed for the weather in a mix of nylon, Goretex, and fleece.

orienteering 30:00 [2] ***

Some low pace night O' practice on the Clinton overlook map (which is in-progress). After finishing the course, I went back out to check out an area with some trail changes. The mountain bikers have re-routed one of the trails that I mapped a month or so ago.

Here is the map:

Monday Nov 16, 2009 #

rowing 20:00 [1]

Enough to break a good sweat but just barely.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

To work in a light misty rain and 39 F. Snow during the day, but the temp was warm enough that it didn't stick. Home was cooler - maybe 35 or so - but a bit drier - some very light misty...maybe a snowflake or two.

I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the commute was. I was also pleasantly surprised to see 4 other cyclists on my way home.

Sunday Nov 15, 2009 #

running 2:50:00 [2]

Long trail run carrying a contours-only map (2 meter interval) at Clinton SP. I planned to run from the beach, but the parking area was closed. I started at the boat ramp on the west end.

I carried the map and read it quite a bit.

Temp was around 46 and rain fell steadily when I started. The rain kept falling the entire run and the temp dropped to 39. I was right on the edge of getting cold when I finished.

I kept an easy pace. Sipping sport drink now and then. Taking short walking breaks. Eating a granola bar after about 1:45.

A really nice run. Fun, too.

And, when I got home there was a bit of lasagna left over from Mary and her friends' lunch. Perfect.

Note

I like this quote from Marianne Andersen:

Det er ekstra deilig å sitte inne i varmen når man har vært ute i regnet og kulda først, og plutselig var jeg egentlig glad for at jeg "måtte" ut, og dermed slapp å bruke tid og energi på å vurdere om jeg skulle ut eller ikke.

That's a bit how I felt after running today.

Note

White squirrel watchers will want to check out Eelgrassman's sighting:

http://www.attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp/user_5818/p...

Note

Three hours of fieldchecking at the Clinton overlook. It went well. I had good mapping flyt today. I checked a bunch of crappy forest - thick and thorny. Fortunately there are plenty of trails. An orienteer won't need to spend much, if any, time in the junky terrain as long as the course setter is reasonable.

I chatted with Kip - a USACE park ranger - for a bit. He knows about orienteering and seemed impressed to see the map. I told him I'd bring a copy by the office when I finished.

Friday Nov 13, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual work commute. Some nut-job drivers on the way home. I think basketball traffic draws people who are clueless.

On campus I saw a guy on the ground in front of a bus. Did he get hit? Maybe he just fell getting off the bus? An ambulance arrived just as I rode by.

cycling 30:00 [1]

To and from the arboretum. I worked a bit hard to make sure I was warmed up for the training at the arboretum and to make sure I'd be home in time for tip-off of the KU-Hofstra game.

orienteering 15:00 [3] ***
13c

Night sprint training at arboretum. Really fun. It felt like a lot of map reading, more than I'd have guessed. The rough open is deep grass, so you save time by running around it instead of just going straight.

Commute. Nothing more to say about that.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Land boat. Nothing more to say about that.

Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Home to office; office to solid waste office; solid waste to office; office to KU; KU to office; office to home; home to grocery store; grocery store home.

I'm not sure of the total time on the bike, certainly a good bit more than an hour. I'll log it as an hour.

Note

It looks like things are set up for OK to volunteer to map the various nature trails in city parks so that the Parks Department can create trail maps. All they need is GPS tracks with a little bit of field checking. Should be fun and a good way to get a little publicity and good will.

Tuesday Nov 10, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute to/from work. Another warm day - short sleeves in the morning (though it was a little chilly in the beginning).

rowing 20:00 [2]

On the land boat. Arms feel a bit rubbery right now.

Monday Nov 9, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Bike commute. Short sleeves both ways - amazingly warm for November.

running 30:00 [2]

Shuffling around on some trails at Clinton while wearing the headlamp. Running at night is fun.

Temp was 65 when we started. 10 minutes into the run and it started raining. When I got back to the car the temp had fallen to 54. Still pretty warm for this time of year.

Sunday Nov 8, 2009 #

running 1:50:00 [2]

Long run on the trails at Clinton SP. I carried a contours-only map and read it quite a bit, probably enough that it would be legit to log this as orienteering.

Really warm weather - maybe 70 or so.

cycling 50:00 [1]

I went out to Sanders mound on the bike path. I used my road bike for the first time in quite a while. It felt strange for the first few minutes. It rides a lot different from my commuter bike. It also felt light and fast, though I didn't.

Saturday Nov 7, 2009 #

Note

Put in some time working on the West Campus/Hutton Lake map. Not a very interesting section of the map, but an area that I really wanted to get out of the way. Most of what is left is to map some crappy vegetation and then do some quality control work on the entire area.

Note

Had an easy day. Mary and I biked over to the movie theater and saw the Michael Jackson movie (can't remember the name of it). Interesting. Not a great movie, but no regrets in seeing it.

After the movie, went out to Clinton overlook and did an hour or so of fieldchecking. More thorns out there than I'd like.

Friday Nov 6, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Unexpectedly warm weather. It seems like November is more like a normal October, and October was more like a normal November.

rowing 20:00 [2]

A bit of time on the land boat. I probably should have tried to get home from work earlier and gone for a night run with Mary.

Thursday Nov 5, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Work commute plus a bit extra.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Night ride on the bike paths. Really nice conditions - about 60 F and clear sky, light wind. I stopped for a few minutes in the canyon out by Clinton Lake and looked at the stars.

Wednesday Nov 4, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual commute.

orienteering 40:00 [2] ***

A bit of night O' practice using the base map for Clinton overlook. I ran a course, but also did a little extra exploring of some of the sketchier trails. I had one sloppy boom when I let some thick vegetation push me way off my line. I had one good fall when I stumbled over some rocks covered by leaves.

The Trailhawks were out there for the regular Wednesday night run. They said hello. I said hello back.

Tuesday Nov 3, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual commute. A bit chilly on the trip to the office. The temp was below freezing. I was surprised to see so many students walking to class in short sleeves.

rowing 20:00 [2]

On the land boat while watching the KU v FHSU basketball game. Basketball!!!

Monday Nov 2, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute to/from work. With the time change it was nice and light in the morning but nearly dark on the way home.

running 30:00 [2]

Easy jog on the trails around Lake Henry in the dark. I carried the contours only map and paid quite a bit of attention. In fact, if I'd done just a little bit more map reading, I would count this as an O' session.

Here is my QR track on a map that combines contours (2 meters) with the lidar intensity:

http://sprintseries.org/doma/show_map.php?user=spi...

Sunday Nov 1, 2009 #

running 1:05:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton with Fritz and Raymond. Raymond just arrived from the UK last night after a long trip and some delay in Newark. He could easily have just stayed home and rested, but he came out for the run.

We carried contour only maps and looked at them now and then, but most of the time just jogged along.

Post-run we got some bagels and coffee...except I had biscuits and gray and coffee.

Note

I did a little field checking at Lichtwardt (not sure I've got the spelling right). The area is pretty small and odd shaped. It is almost entirely wooded, just a small parking lot and a field around the parking area. The trail network is a figure 8 with about 2 km of length. The forest is reasonably nice - not the most open area in Kansas but far from the thickest. I found a few thorny areas, but not many. I came across a few old barbed wire fences.

I'm planning to create the map as a sprint map...part of my plan to turn Lawrence into the Vancouver of North America...wait, that doesn't really make sense. I guess I'll call it the Vancouver of Kansas.
