cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual commute. I wore some running gloves (with fingers) and that helped....and then I found my warm gloves when I got home! Now I should be set for future cool day bike commutes.

running 50:00 [1]

Low intensity because I stopped to put some tapes along the trails. I ran on West Campus and carried the map.

The trail loop is 1.15 km. It'd be nice if it was 100 meters longer so that 4x would be 5 km.

I didn't find any spider webs. None. Amazing.

I did find a couple of honey locust spikes and got jabbed in the finger and scratched on the arm. Hardly any blood (though certainly enough to make Swampfox light headed).

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute to/from work. The temp when I woke up this morning was 39. My fingers got cold on the ride in. I need to figure out where my warmer gloves are. I suspect they got packed in one of the boxes that we haven't yet unpacked. Wish I knew which box.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Watched "Cops" while on the land boat. I wonder if the police on Cops behave the way they do because they've got a TV camera on them or if they behave that way all the time. If that's normal behavior, there are some cities I really want to avoid.

cycling 45:00 [1]

The work commute. Another really nice day - cool and clear. Forecast called for a lot of wind, but it wasn't really bad at all.

running 40:00 [2]

Jogging on the old trails at West Campus. I only encountered two spider webs.

I think that with a little more use the trails will be quite nice for running.

Sunday Sep 27, 2009 #

Note

I made some important progress on the sprint orienteering map. It was hot out in the mid-day sun today. Draining.

running 45:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (20:00 @4)

I ran a 5K-ish trail race at Clinton State Park. Did a bit to warm up and then jogged a bit after I'd finished.

I carried the old orienteering map (1996, I guess) and it certainly needs to be updated.

The race was small - 20 runners, I think - and was put on by the Lawrence Trail Hawks (or is it trailhawks?). The course began at campground 1, went to lands end, then ran west along the shoreline trail, climbed a bit and looped back to the campground. The last bit was climbing the steps that lead from the trail back to the campground. Those steps were a bit of a chore. Nice course - mostly flat and mostly fast. The shoreline section is a bit rocky and uneven. The trail was a little muddy and wet in a couple of places.

I worked hard and felt a lot better going hard than I'd expected. I wasn't going fast and I struggled with the rougher sections and the little climb.

cycling 45:00 [1]

The work commute. Perfect weather for riding, but I didn't see many other people out on their bikes. On the other hand, downtown was full of people wandering around. Fridays before KU football games seem to attract crowds to downtown.

running 25:00 [2]

Jogged around on West Campus with the map.

I peered into the dense woods at one point and spotted a permanent O' marker. I wonder who put it out there. I wonder how many more are out in the woods on West Campus.

cycling 1:20:00 [1]

Lots of commuting-like biking today. From home to the office, the office to the ITC, the ITC back to the office, and then the office to home.

I read this story from Scientific American:

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=g...

It inspired me to count cyclists on my ride home. I counted 7 women and 10 men.

rowing 20:00 [2]

In retrospect, a run would have been a better use of my time.

Wednesday Sep 23, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commuting and grocery shopping. Took it quite easy today.

Hands were cold on the ride to work. I need to either find some gloves or buy some new ones.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute. Really nice conditions today. It felt like Fall...oh yeah, it is Fall.

I had a meeting on campus at the engineering building. As I was walking in, I noticed a bike and recalled my first mountain bike. It was a yellow Giant Iguana, just like the bike parked by the door. As I was leaving I realized it probably wasn't just the same model, it was probably the same bike. I think the bike went from me to Fritz to Gene to Damon.

running 25:00 [2]

I almost didn't get out the door. I jogged around on West Campus, carrying the map and looking at it now and then.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I managed to make it to the office before the rain started. It rained most of the day, but stopped just long enough for me to get home. Once I got home, the rain started again.

rowing 20:00 [1]

On the land boat for a bit.

Sunday Sep 20, 2009 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

Met Gene and Raymond for a run on the river trail. Nice run. Good weather. Gene kept a good, steady pace. We expected Fritz, but something must have come up.

Legs felt a bit sore from yesterday's harder running. But, I certainly felt better than I did on my last long run with Gene.

Post run "fika" at La Prima Taza.

cycling 30:00 [1]

I did a 30 minute ride on the bike paths after dinner.

I also ran a few errands before dinner. I rode to/from downtown and to/from the grocery store. Easy, but felt good to move around a bit.

Saturday Sep 19, 2009 #

running 5:00 [2]

A little bit of jogging to warm up.

orienteering 25:00 [4] ***

The PTOC sprint series final race at SMP. The course was a bit long for a sprint - 4 km. Paul (I think) updated the map, adding some of the changes near the lake, mapping individual trees, and drawing in the mowed areas for the Frisbee golf course. Shifman set the course. Fun and tough work. The deep grass was a chore to run through.

Potluck afterward was nice. I made a chilled avocado soup that was a bit boring. I've made it before and managed the seasoning better.

Note

Dick N. and Mike S. also get some credit for map updating.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Biking to/from work. It was cool enough this morning that I wore a light jacket (if you saw someone in Lawrence who looked like an early 1990s Italian Orienteering Team member...that was me).

rowing 20:00 [2]

A bit on the land boat. Felt like a really chubby out of shape version of Martin Johansson.

I watched an episode of "Cops" while I rowed. I'm working on a police project and when I do that, I get interested in policing. Cops is interesting (even if not exactly true to life). Lesson from today's episode - do what you can to avoid dealing with Sheriff departments in Florida.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Really nice weather. The ride in was nice. The ride home was ok, but there seemed to be a lot of strange drivers out there today.

orienteering 25:00 [2]

O' practice on the arboretum sprint map. I forgot to bring a magnifier, so I had a bit of trouble reading detail. Maybe that is good practice.

cycling 30:00 [2]

Biking to/from the arboretum.

On the way back a group of 5 serious-looking cyclists passed me. One of them read my shirt and said, "orienteering, cool." Funny how good it feels when someone seems to know something about the sport. I wonder if she'd ever orienteered. Maybe she just knows one of the local orienteering cyclists (or cycling orienteers).

Note

Martin Johansson is using the land boat!

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute to/from work.

running 30:00 [2]

Jogged to West Campus, did a little bit of fieldchecking, jogged back. 30+ minutes of running.

Tuesday Sep 15, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Home in the dark. It was a good test of the bike lights. I brought along my Tesla in case I needed it. I didn't. The new bike lights are fine...though the Tesla is spectacular.

Monday Sep 14, 2009 #

cycling 1:15:00 [1]

Commuting to/from work. When I got home, Mary and I went out for a bit of a ride on the bike paths. Nice.

Tomorrow will be a long work day with a City Commission meeting - probably won't get in a run.

Sunday Sep 13, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [2]

My legs felt sore (still) from yesterday's run.

I explored some potential mapping projects as a warm up. I think the area around Lied Center and the Dole Institute will be the next logical extension of my current map. I also checked out the campus housing east of the Daisy Hill dorms. Maybe a project for next year will be to map that part of campus.

After a good warm up, I did some cycling intervals. I don't think I've done that since the late 1980s. I did a loop of about 600 meters. I'd go hard for 300, then recover (slowly) over 300. have to say it felt good for the first two, tough the next two, and quite difficult the last one. I probably went too hard but it was fun to do something different for a change.

Note

I did a little bit of fieldchecking on the sprint map. I wish the leaves would fall and I could get to work on the wooded sections.

Saturday Sep 12, 2009 #

running 1:40:00 [2]

Can I call it a long run if I didn't even complete half of Mean Gene's planned run? It sure felt like a long run. I did one loop. As I was getting ready to drive home, Gene was starting loop two. He seemed to be doing pretty well. He was certainly doing better than I was.

I haven't run much this summer and it showed. My legs are sore. Not just a bit tired.

cycling 40:00 [1]

To/from downtown for dinner at Ingredient. We got a few Christopher Elbow chocolates for dessert.

Friday Sep 11, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 20:00 [2]

Ran from home. I stopped for about 10 minutes and did a little bit of fieldchecking. The area immediately next to the Monarch Watch building needed to be checked (adding a few lone trees, adding one little bit of trail, and marking the garden area). It will feel good to have that little "hole" in the map completed.

Legs felt slow.

Thursday Sep 10, 2009 #

cycling 50:00 [1]

Mostly this was commuting to/from work.

I planned to run a bit tonight but in the middle of the day I was feeling strangely tired. I decided to take it easy. I couldn't resist a little bit of fieldchecking the sprint map at WC.

Had a voice mail from Raymond. He's back in town and wondered about anything going on this weekend. Not sure what is going on, but I've been thinking about going to KC to watch some of the Tour of Missouri. And the Haskel art fair is this weekend...and you know what that means? Indian taco!

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Work was a bit long today. I did a two police ride alongs. Interesting even if nothing especially exciting was going on in Lawrence this afternoon.

rowing 20:00 [2]

A little time on the land boat when I got home.

Tuesday Sep 8, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Nice on the way to work. Rainy on the way home. I stopped at the pool and watched the pooch plunge for a few minutes.

running 40:00 [2]

I jogged around on West Campus. I carried the current version of the map (which is less than half-complete). I didn't do enough map reading to call it orienteering, but I did spend a fair amount of time checking features. I ran up an area where they've done a bunch of utility work. The area is covered with clay-mud instead of short grass. After about 25 meters, my shoes were caked and heavy. It made running really slow until I got out of the junk and scraped my shoes.

Monday Sep 7, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

An hour + of cycling, includes 40 minutes or so with Mary and a few errands.

Planned to do a bit more today - including some fieldchecking - but didn't get around to it. Instead I downloaded a bunch of photos, did a bunch of laundry, and mowed the yard.

Note

In Bozeman after a week in Yellowstone. Didn't train in the park but spent a lot of time hiking and even some time map reading. Will start up some more normal training when we get back home.
