rowing 20:00 [2]

Just a bit of time on the land boat.

Mary's aunt, Jean, passed away last night. I'm glad we were able to see her and say goodbye.

running 5:00 [2]

Jogging around a bit to warm up.

A bit of O' practice at Mt Tom. Mt Tom is the first place I'd ever orienteered that wasn't midwest terrain. I haven't been back since then (1983?). I shuffled around the course with Peter shadowing. I did a little bit of good orienteering and a bunch of just sort of running around and eventually finding the controls. I think what the good legs had in common was that I was consciously keeping a high LAM frequency. Fun.

Note

Long, surprisingly tiring travel day. Purely a family trip. But I will try to squeeze in a run or two.

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Commuting to/from work. Really humid.

My plan is to bike to work at least twice a week. Didn't happen this week.

running 35:00 [3]

Jogging on the river trail after work. A big storm popped up in Jefferson County and pulled some of the humidity out of the air. The run felt ok.

On the way home the storm picked up the wind and the temp dropped 10+ degrees in 10 minutes.

Meanwhile...as I write this the Royals had a runner thrown out trying for an inside the park home run. If he'd have been stopped at third they'd have had a man on third, no outs. The 3rd base coached waved the runner on. The runner slowed a bit approaching 3rd and then had to speed up before getting thrown out at home. It is like they are trying to reduce the chances of winning the game.

Note

I spent some time fieldchecking the downtown sprint map - mostly adding all the trees in the train park and around the library block. Fun.

As I was heading back to the car I met one of the City Commissioners and showed him my map. He seemed a bit puzzled that I'd be out fieldchecking as a hobby.

Leaving work and going to attempt a short (20 minute) run.

running 20:00 [2]

Nice jog on the river trails. Hot but maybe not quite as bad as expected. I took a long time after I stopped before I felt good.

Had a song stuck in my head:

cycling 1:40:00 [2]

Riding on the bike paths. I managed to get out the door reasonably early (8-ish). I saw more people than usual out on the bike paths.

At one point I saw a car pass by (I was on the path, the car on K-10) and thought - hey, that looks like Mary's car. I figured Mary was still home, sound asleep. Turns out it was Mary's car. She'd gone over to Clinton and done some running on the flat grassy areas.

Note

I did a bit of sprint map fieldchecking at South Park and around the police station. I felt like I was making good progress.

A couple of observations...When I parked the car, the Royals were tied 3-3 in the 3rd inning. When I got back in the car, it was the end of the 4th inning...and the Royals were now down 11-4. That must have been an awful inning to watch....There was a group of about a dozen people in the park fighting each other. They had pads on their arms and legs and were punching and kicking each other.

running 40:00 [1]

This is a sum of the time for warming up before the arboretum sprint, putting out controls at Burcham, and picking up control at Burcham.

Arobretum sprint. This was fun even though running didn't feel very good. The temps were below 80 but the humidity was really high and there was no wind. The air felt thick and you were drenched after just a few minutes.

I finished about 20-30 seconds ahead of Matt Barrett. I don't think I'lll be beating him very much longer.

cycling 45:00 [2]

A little bit of cycling on the bike path after work. Feels like it might be cooling off a bit. Maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Short jog to "warm up" and then ran the Constant-Burcham sprint course. If the weather was ok, it'd be a fast course.

I felt worn out by the end. Temp is low 90s with humidity. The "heat index" is 101.

The forecast for race time on Saturday is just below 90 but with much lower humidity.

Commute to/from work in Texas-like heat and humidity. I choose not to live in Texas.

Actually, it turns out that it is cooler in Texas right now!

rowing 20:00 [2]

Two old friends today....

First, the phone rang and I picked it up. Snorkel! He was on his way to a Royal's game. He also wanted to know when and where the 2010 relay champs were being held. Good question. As far as I know, it hasn't been awarded.

Second, the landboat was calling my name (i.e. it was so hot and humid outside that I didn't want to move out of the airconditioning). I did a bit on the landboat while watching the Royals game (didn't spot Snorkel in any of the crowd shots).

running 1:00:00 [2]

"Som en bastu" out there on the river trail after work. The big storm this a.m. left the forest full of humidity and the temp was mid 80s. Texas-like. Yuck.

I actually felt ok for the first 35 minutes, then I just kept easing off the pace while the effort kept going up.

At the end I caught a glimpse of an eagle. At least I think it was an eagle. It was flying behind some trees, but I caught some white feathers and what looked like a fish hanging from talons.

cycling 1:20:00 [1]

Went out for a ride. I took several breaks to watch some of the triathletes cycling across the dam and into Clinton State Park. The triathlon lucked out on the weather - cloudy until about 10 or so, temp around 70, and almost no wind. No wind. That doesn't happen often.

Triathletes are fun to watch.

I was most surprised to see one rider wearing a jacket. It wasn't blazing hot, but I can't imagine wearing a jacket today.

I saw several cyclists with compression socks. Seems like something Patrick would wear, especially if they come in hot pink.

I wonder if Mean Gene was at the running portion taking photos.

orienteering 30:00 [2]

After watching a little bit of the first leg of Jukola, I went to Constant/Burcham and tested my course for next weekend.

Note

I did some mapping today. In the a.m. I checked some stuff and made a few changes in Burcham and Constant Parks. In the afternoon I did some mapping at South Park.

Commuting to/from work.

running 45:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (5:00 @3) + (10:00 @4)

On the trails at Clinton. The trails were a bit muddy and slippery in places, that kept my pace down. I did 15 minutes of 70/20s.

Near the end a met a pack of 5 trail runners (all women). I guess it must have been some sort of group. Gene mentioned that there is a Lawrence version of the Trail Nerds.

Tuesday Jun 9, 2009 #

Note

CC meeting tonight. I'm not last on the agenda, but I'm close. If things go ok, I'm hoping to be home around 9. That's probably optimistic.

Monday Jun 8, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Commute to/from work. Serious humidity today.

On the trip to work, 3 people out walking dogs said hello as I rode by.

Sunday Jun 7, 2009 #

running 1:40:00 [2]

Got myself out of bed, ate a bit of skyr, and was on the trail before 8 a.m. Temps were still under 75 by the time I finished.

I saw 5 other trail runners out there but nobody else on the trails and just 3 people fishing at Lake Henry. An Indigo Bunting sitting on a branch next to the trail was a highlight. Usually they seem to fly away as soon as a runner approaches, but this one just sat on a branch.

When I got home, Mary suggested going out for breakfast. We went to Marisco's, which is close to our apartment, and I had a big breakfast. The biscuits and bison gravy were tasty.

cycling 50:00 [2]

I decided I could sit in a comfy chair in the air conditioning and watch some sports on TV...or I could get outside and roll around a bit. The lazy version of me would have watched TV, but I managed to get out for a ride. It was hot, sunny, and windy. I think I was a bit dehydrated as I drank a full waterbottle without thinking about it in the first 15 minutes of the ride.

Saturday Jun 6, 2009 #

cycling 50:00 [2]

I did a late afternoon ride on the bike path. Lots of wind from the south made the return trip easy.

I also did a bit of fieldchecking at South Park.

orienteering 30:00 [2]

Testing some options for the Constant/Burcham sprint course. My current course finished with two controls at Constant Park. The runners have to cross the train tracks to get to the last two controls. There are just a couple of trains each day. The chances of a train interrupting the race are very low. But I'm wondering if I should finish the course on the river side of the tracks so that runners wouldn't have to cross the tracks at all.

One option I've thought about is to keep the course as is and just void the results if a train happens to come. That would be a bummer if a train happened to interrupt the competition. But it would ensure that an idiot orienteer didn't try to cross in front of a coming train to save a few seconds.

cycling 50:00 [2]

Commute to work then to Ramzi's office and then home. Except as I was getting ready to ride to Ramzi's office I discovered that the sidewall on my rear tire was cut. I figured it'd make it to Ramzi's. Everytime I hit a bump I was worried. But, I made it.

After the meeting, I packed the bike in Mary's car (it fit!) and we stopped at Sunflower on the way home so I could buy a new tire (Specialized Armadillo, in case you're interested).

Today was also the first test of my new bike rack/bag combo. It worked well.

running 20:00 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (5:00 @4)

Short (but quick-ish) run on the river trail. Once again the weather wasn't terribly hot and I didn't feel very good (and for just a short run). Something seems to be a little off, not sure what. It is probably just one of those things that will go away in a day or two.

running 1:00:00 [2]

On the river trail in a nice, cool(er) rain. It was nice to be out running even if I felt extra-slow.

The KU non-conference b-ball schedule came out today. January 5 is the big day - KU v Cornell in Allen FH.
