orienteering race 30:00 [4] ***
5c

I ran red at W.P. Actually, I started to run red. My mind was just not in it at all. I remember a similar run back in 1990. I decided I'd just stop, rest a while and then map jog/walk back to the finish.

orienteering 30:00 [2]

After resting in the woods a bit, I jogged/walked back to the finish. Most of the time I was reading the map pretty carefully, trying to get my mind back on what I was doing. I also spent a few minutes watching Kenny jogging around.

The sprint race at West Point. I was annoyed at my run earlier in the day. I usually do well when I'm annoyed. I had a decent sprint race. The course was a lot of fun and I felt like I was running well (stumbling around in the rocks a bit).

running 40:00 [2]

My legs felt great....as long as I was running downhill. The rest of the time they felt dead. I shuffled around PNS on the way home from work.

Monday Apr 25, 2005 #

Note

I took the day off. The plan was to mow, but the rain prevented that. I gave some thought to 30 on the trainer but decided to take a complete rest day.

My right foot is a little sore (running hard on a hard surface seems to have been a bad idea).

Mary and I were in Lawrence, so we visited the river trails for a run. Perfect weather -- cool and sunny -- and a great place for running. Really fun.

running 15:00 [4]

On the trails I ran 70/20s at an honest effort. It felt pretty good, though I could feel the hills in my legs from yesterday.

I watched the women's relay before going for a trail run at Wyandotte.

I came across a guy dressed in camoflage and carrying a shotgun. Not sure what he was doing, but he waved and said hello.

I did plenty of climb and felt really good. That's always fun. The nice cool weather certainly helped. I hope my climbing legs feel so good next weekend at W.P.

My split for the first 1000 feet of climb was 39:50. The 2nd 1000 feet of climb was 40:47. I climbed a total of 2260 feet.

A short easy session on the trainer. You don't want to train too hard or too much the day before Tio Mila.

I arrived at Wyandotte a bit late. Near the park I drove in to a serious hail storm. I turned around and drove out of the hail, parked the car and waited for the storm to pass (read a bit of Freakonomics while waiting).

Once the hail passed, I went to the park. Classic midwest spring weather today. In the hour I ran I experienced: calm; strong wind; calm; rain; strong wind; hail; calm; and finally sun. Most of that was nice for running. The hail was a bit worrying, fortunately it never got big (bigger than an M&M, but smaller than a peanut M&M).

I climbed 1140 feet.

Feeling a bit sleepy today...spent some time on the trainer.

I jogged the deer trails up and down the hill at Wyandotte. I felt heavy for the first ten minutes, then I felt good. I climbed 1260 feet.

SLOC A-meet at Rockwoods (M21 again).

I had a complete melt-down. The warmth (plus yesterdays effort?) really hit me. I carried Gookinaid and drank water at the stops, but the second half of the course felt like a death march. I felt like I was fighting to keep moving. Unfortunately, I was thinking about moving instead of reading the map and I made a bunch of booms.

The course was interesting and not excessively hilly (good job with the course setting).

Way, way behind. Michael Eglin ran 82 minutes.

This was a race for me to forget.

SLOC middle distance race at Cliff Cave. The area has a lot of sink holes. Rick Armstrong set a nice course. The orienteering wasn't hard, but it felt like you were making lots of small decisions all the time. I had a good run and won. Yep, I won M21. I've now met one of Mikell Platt's goals for the season. Michael Eglin finished 2nd.

I ran the last leg for OK's relay team at Forest Park. My legs felt a bit tired from the morning, but once I got going it was fine. The orienteering was fun. The park was full of people. I had a decent race -- went out a bit hard but then eased back and had a nice race. I didn't see more than a couple of people out there, but I apparently passed several. Unfortunately, OK was DQds for a mispunch on the first leg. Despite that, it was a blast.

We stopped at Rudolph Bennitt on the way to St Louis. I think the last time the map was used was 21 years ago (to the day, in fact). The map has held up quite well. The contours seemed decent and the forest was nice. I think we'll need to see about updating the map.

Thursday Apr 14, 2005 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

I worked a bit late, then had to do some laundry and pack for the St Louis race. I didn't have much time, so I just spent a half hour on the trainer.

Wednesday Apr 13, 2005 #

Note

Feeling worn out. I don't think I'm getting sick. It doesn't feel like that. Whatever. I came home from work in the middle of the afternoon and took a nap. That helped.

Tuesday Apr 12, 2005 #

running 1:00:00 [2]

I ran at Wyandotte on the way home from work. I decided to run until I hit 1000 feet of climb. It turned out it took almost exactly an hour (total climb ended up being 1020). My legs felt strange -- not bad but not normal.

Mary and I went up to Weston Bend. I ran on the trails and the gravel road below the bluffs. Fun, but it felt like a summer day -- warm, humid. Actually it was only about 72 when we ran. I hope I can survive the real warm weather. I carried the O' map and read it a bit, but I wouldn't call this an O' session. I climbed 680 feet.

running 15:00 [4]

About every 20 minutes I picked up the pace and worked hard for 5 minutes. I did that three times. I felt strong (for me) but not fast.

cycling 1:05:00 [2]

I rode my mountain bike on the roads (most of the time on the bunny loop). A fairly strong wind made it tougher than normal. I climbed 800 feet.

Saturday Apr 9, 2005 #

Note

Feeling sleepy today.

Friday Apr 8, 2005 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy time on the trainer just after the eclipse passed by Kansas City and while the pizza dough was rising. 30 minutes was enough to move me above Tom and Peter on the front page of Attackpoint.

cycling 30:00 [1]

An easy half hour on the trainer in the basement first thing in the morning.

running 1:35:00 [2]

Today's run was very similar to yesterday's. I ran at Wyandotte, most of the time on small trails, and climbed a good bit. I didn't quite climb as much today as I did yesterday. My legs certainly felt yesterday's climb. Today I did 1480 feet of climb.

Wednesday Apr 6, 2005 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

An easy, but hilly, run at Wyandotte. The woods are thickening up. I spent most of the time running on the deer trail up the big hill overlooking the floodplain. I climbed 1720 feet.

Tuesday Apr 5, 2005 #

running 45:00 [2]

I jogged around on the trails at PNS on the way home from work. My legs felt a bit tired from the weekend (or could it have been mowing last night?). I climbed 460 feet.

I went back to my age group for the classic day at the team trials. I had another decent run, though I ran better on Friday and Saturday.

An early boom hurt and made me change my approach a bit (navigating a bit more pedantically).

I saw a lot of Nadim on the course -- we took turns trying to get away from each other.

I climbed 740 feet.

orienteering race 46:00 [4] ***

Middle distance at the team trials. I ran M21 and had another decent, but with room for improvement, race. The rain, cold and wind made for more interesting orienteering because you could go farther off the line to save muddly, sloppy climbs.

I was pretty happy with my result. I finished ahead of two of the WOC team members (Dan S-H and Boris) and within striking distance of the other two (8 seconds behind S.V. and 38 behind Eric B.). Wish I'd been 2 seconds faster and beaten Leif A.

I climbed 620 feet.

Sprint race at the team trials. I had a decent run. But, I've still got plenty of room for improvement. Fun.
