running 1:20:00 [2]

Running on the mushy, slushy trails at PNS (with headlamp).

running 10:00 [4]

4 x 3 minutes (with 3 minutes of jogging rest) on the Old Kate trail at PNS. Tired at the end.

Monday Nov 29, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy time on the trainer....a perfect warm up before watching the Jayhawks on TV.

Sunday Nov 28, 2004 #

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

I figured my legs could use a rest. I also felt like taking it easy -- hanging around the house. When the football game started I decided something would be better than nothing. So I watched the first half of the game on the trainer. My legs felt much better after the time on the trainer.

SLOC meet at Hawn. Really nice terrain and map. The format was a 3-hour score O'. Dave Frei and I managed to get all 33 of the controls. Dave did it about ten minutes faster than me, though. I was quite psyched to be ahead of Michael Eglin (though I don't think his shape is so good right now).

running 55:00 [2]

The plan was to do the RunLawrence 5 k. But the idea of a race on ice and slush on the levee wasn't so appealing. Sleeping late sounded good. So, instead of a 5km race Mary and I went to Wyandotte. I jogged easily on snowy roads.

orienteering 45:00 [3]

I ran a short course with lots of controls on the east side of the lake. I'd run the same course last winter. I kept a steady but not so hard pace, slogging through the snow. I also picked routes to maximize climb (basically going as close to the line as possible). Really fun.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy cycling on the trainer (after ten minutes or so of snow shoveling).

orienteering 1:15:00 [2]

Easy night O practice at SMP. I took it easy, but concentrated well. Snorkel planned to run, but for some reason changed his mind. I don't know why. Could it have been the weather? 40, steady wind and stead rain.

I hate when I do a decent night O' session and then check Attackpoint and see that Peter did more O' practice than me.

I ran a long control picking course at Landahl. I kept the pace a bit low and set the course with a few breaks (chances to run on trails instead of bashing through the thorns). My mind wandered a couple of times, but otherwise it went well.

running 10:00 [4]

After the O' practice, I put in ten minutes at an honest effort on the mtb trails. I chased a mountain biker for the last 5 minutes, but couldn't catch him.

running 30:00 [2]

Easy jogging on the mtb trails to get back to the car. I spent most of the time on new trails -- not yet on the map -- and read the map as I went. Near the end it started raining. Rain! Where did that come from?

I tested Fritz's Kansas Champs course at Tall Oaks. I worked reasonably hard, but a tick below an honest effort. Nice day and the forest was much more runnable than last time I was out at Tall Oaks with Snorkel.

running 35:00 [2]

I jogged around Fritz's white course and checked out a few extra spots.

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

I rode my MTB on the roads. I went - via the bunny loop - up to the fire station near the AA maintenance base and back. Nice ride.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy time on the trainer while the pizza dough rises...a perfect warm up for tonight's KU versus Vermont b-ball game on TV.

Thursday Nov 18, 2004 #

running 35:00 [2]

Jogging from the car to the start, then from the finish back to the car.

orienteering 40:00 [2]

Snorkel and I ran a night O' course at SMP. We jogged easily, taking different routes on each leg. I ran in running shoes rather than O' shoes. A mistake as the wet weather meant I slipped a bit on rocks and mud. Near the end I came across a brand new trail! Turns out they've closed a small section of the existing trail and re-routed the trail. Unfortunately the new trail is a significant part of the OK test loop. It'll add a couple hundred meters to the test loop.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Just a bit to break a sweat and feel like I'd done more than sit around. My legs felt a bit tired in the a.m., but felt fine by the end of the day. I'll do some night O' practice tomorrow (in the rain?).

Tuesday Nov 16, 2004 #

running 1:15:00 [2]

A hilly trail run (with headlamp) at PNS. My altimeter watch needs a new battery. So I'm not certain of the climb. I felt like about 900-1000 feet. The park had signs announcing a hunt. Apparently they're having an archery hunt for forest rats. The park will be closed 12/11-16 and 1/4-9 for the hunt. I saw the glowing eyes of lots of forest rats tonight.

running 1:30:00 [2]

An easy jog at Wyandotte. I wasn't sure how I'd feel. I decided to run for 20 minutes and then either go back to the car or stay out for 90 minutes. After 20 minutes I was having fun, though feeling a bit tired. I spent the first hour in the forest, the last 30 minutes of trails/grass/roads.

PTOC race at Landahl. I had a decent run, felt pretty good and didn't lose much time except for trying to get across the streams and an occassional trip in to some thorns. Snorkel ran but seems to have had his mind on something other than orienteering (he made two 180s, including leaving the start triangle heading the wrong way).

running 15:00 [2]

I jogged around the white course to cool off a bit.

orienteering 1:00:00 [4]
ahr:159 24c

PTOC night O' (score course) at Burr Oak Woods. I began feeling good, but with legs a bit tired from the morning's run. At the 40 minute point I came to a little 2 or 3 line hill with lots of downed trees from the ice storm a year or two ago. As I started up the hill my legs felt dead. The last 20 minutes my legs felt tired.

Friday Nov 12, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

My legs felt sore today. I suspect that's because of how I ran yesterday (about 90 minutes, followed by standing and sitting around in the cold, followed by 25 minutes in the forest). I was going to take today off, but decided a little time on the bike, while the pizza dough was rising, might do me some good.

Thursday Nov 11, 2004 #

orienteering 1:30:00 [2]

I hung markers for tonight's night O' practice. Then I re-ran most of Nadim's relay O' pracitce course. By the time I was done it was getting dark enough that I had trouble seeing the map.

orienteering 25:00 [2]

I picked up controls from the night O' practice. We had a decent turn out: Snorkel, Mean Gene, Keith, Mary, Mike S., Loren and Angela.

Wednesday Nov 10, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

A short ride on the trainer.

Tuesday Nov 9, 2004 #

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging at PNS (another run with the headlamp).

running 15:00 [4]

5 x 3 minutes at an honest effort (even a bit harder than an honest effort), with 3 minutes of jogging to rest. I ran on the Old Kate Trail at PNS. Lots of creatures of the night in the park. I saw lots of eyes shining back at my headlamp.

Sunday Nov 7, 2004 #

running 1:25:00 [2]

Mary, Susan, Patrick and I went to the Tennessee Valley area in Marin County. I ran, they hiked. Actually, I ran a bit then met them and we walked a bit, then I ran a bit more. I climbed a couple of big hills. Around KC I can't get more than about 4 minutes of climb, so climbs that lasted 20+ minutes feel tough. Legs felt tired afterwards. I hate to think how bad they'd have felt if I hadn't been doing a bit of hill training this year.

Saturday Nov 6, 2004 #

orienteering 30:00 [4]
ahr:167 17c

US Middle Champs race at Morgan Territory. I had a decent, though not great, race. I finished 2nd in M40 (and on the red course) a couple of minutes behind Martin Kunz -- who had a quick race. The course had a lot of controls, it felt like control picking.

orienteering 40:00 [3]

After the race, I went back out and jogged a bit and re-ran the red course. I ran a bit harder than I planned, but far from race effort.

Friday Nov 5, 2004 #

orienteering 30:00 [3]

Mary and I spent some time exploring Big Basin State Park. We also did 30+ minutes of O' on the map.

Thursday Nov 4, 2004 #

running 35:00 [2]

I shuffled around the neighborhood first thing in the morning. My legs aren't used to running this early in the day, but after 15 minutes or so they felt normal.

Wednesday Nov 3, 2004 #

Note

Day off. My plan for the next few days is to get in some training whenever the opportunity comes up. But I'm not counting on having much chance to train. I plan to race at the short champs on Saturday.

Tuesday Nov 2, 2004 #

running 1:10:00 [2]

I ran on trails at PNS with my headlamp. Except for the night O' champs, I haven't run at night since last spring. It was a blast. I ran without my altimeter, but it felt like I climbed 900 feet.

Monday Nov 1, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Enough biking to break a good sweat.

Note

I lost my bet with Peter. I got down to 170.8 as a morning weigh-in. While I lost the bet, I was down about three pounds since the U.S. Champs. That's positive. Getting down to something like 160 would be nice.
