running 40:00 [2]

I began with about 30 minutes running on the roads, trails and in the woods at Wyandotte. After some technique training, I finished up with some easy trail running.

I ran a control picking course at Wyandotte. I tried to keep a steady pace but not push it so hard that I'd boom. I had a small bobble in the beginning (third control I think), but then ran pretty cleanly. My mind began to wander a couple of times after about 25 minutes. But, I was able to get my mind back on what I was doing quickly.

I jogged around at Weston Bend. I was carrying the map and reading it most of the time. I wouldn't call it orienteering though. I was just looking at stuff as I came across it. I ran for an hour then did an O'session, then jogged a bit to get back to the car.

Ran a short course at Weston Bend. I ran fairly hard but had a bit of trouble keeping a good pace. My legs felt a bit heavy. I also struggled to move well on the downhills (Weston Bend has some steep hills and I'm really weak on the downhills). I ended up pushing a bit hard on the trails. I navigated well.

running 50:00 [2]

We finally got something a bit like winter weather. A few snowflakes fell this morning and it was in the 20s when I shuffled around the neighborhood tonight. I threw in 5 x 30 seconds on the hill from Amity.

cycling 30:00 [2]

I rode the trainer in the basement. There wasn't any basketball on TV, so I watched a Seinfeld re-run. It is a lot more interesting to watch sports.

Jogged at Wyandotte. I carried the map and spent a fair amount of time reading it, but just running along and reading things as I came to them. I also picked up some water bottles and cups from yesterday's meet. Most of this time was easy but I did 10 minutes at an honest effort near the end when I needed to move fast to stay warm crossing the dam (exposed to the north wind). I also did ...

..2 very short courses. One was on each side of the lake.

PTOC had a meet at Wyandotte. This was the red course (quite short but hilly). I worked fairly hard and felt pretty good.

orienteering 30:00 [2]

I ran (taking it easy) the orange course. I planned to do the green, but it was too similar to the red to make it interesting. The orange, like the red, was hilly.

Rode the trainer in the basement while watching KU play UNCG. It is a lot easier to ride when you're watching basketball. I did my usual routine -- pedal hard when the Jayhawks are on defense, then back off a bit on offense.

Night O' practice at SMP. I have a small stash of the 1985 version of the map (I think Dick N. must have been cleaning out his supply of old maps or something). I designed a course that looped the lake. It was interesting to run with the old map -- a challenge at some places. One leg turned out to be very easy. As I left the 4th control, I oriented the map and saw two route (around on trails or straight through the woods), I decided I'd go straight. I looked up and noticed that if I just headed straight toward the rising moon, I couldn't miss the control. Simple.

I shuffled around the neighborhood. My legs felt heavy.

cycling 30:00 [1]

A bit of time on the trainer in the basement.

Sunday Nov 17, 2002 #

running 1:20:00 [2]

I ran around hanging vetting tapes at Clinton for the State Champs.

orienteering 1:35:00 [2]

I ran around on the Kill Creek map. Most of the time I was following a line I'd drawn before I went out. Here and there I'd leave the line to check out an area that looked interesting. The main idea was to get in a slow/easy run and to check out the map before it is used for the first time. I also...

...ran hard a bit. Once, I did a very short course with six controls over less than one K. Later I did a bit longer course with 10 controls (over maybe 2+ K).

cycling 30:00 [1]

Even though it was only a four day work week, it was a stressful week. A half hour on the trainer felt good. The plan for the weekend is to spend a bunch of time in the forest.

Jogging around at SMP.

orienteering 20:00 [4]

Night O' practice at SMP. I ran from 1 to 3 then 2. I didn't realize what I'd done until I was just leaving 2. I didn't go back and run them in the right order, I just went on to 4. I was the last starter and picked up controls as I went. Unfortunately, I managed to pass Keith on the course without seeing him. So, he didn't have controls for him on the second part of the course.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some time on the trainer in the basement. 30 minutes on the trainer feels like a lot more.

Monday Nov 11, 2002 #

running 1:05:00 [2]

Jogging around on the Clinton SP map.

orienteering 30:00 [5]

Testing route choice options at Clinton SP. I ran hard for 15 minutes, 13 minutes and 7 minutes. By the time I got back to my car I was worn out. My legs were tired and I was dehyrated.

running 31:00 [2]

Jogging to/from the course I set at Wyandotte.

orienteering 14:00 [4] 1.75 km (8:00 / km) +84m 6:27 / km

I set a short course (1.75 km) with a bunch of controls and a good bit of climb. It was fun, but my legs felt yesterday's races. Parts of Wyandotte are really nice. I felt better running the downhills than I have in over a year.

PTOC red course at Jacomo. The woods were thick and crappy (even for the KC area). There was a fair amount of deadfall from last winter's ice storm (this would be the best local area to do some runs to prepare for terrain with a lot of deadfall). I made my way around the course without too much trouble. Tom Hanley set the courses and did a reasonably job -- though I'd have preferred a few more opportunities to run on trails or roads to get a break from the woods.

orienteering 29:00 [5]
ahr:170 20c

PTOC night O' on a new map at Jacomo. It was a score course with lots of controls. My route to get all the controls wasn't very well planned -- I did a reasonably bit more distance than necessary. I recovered from the red course and my legs felt decent except when I had to go up a hill. I had two small booms.

I really like night O' and was psyched that PTOC put the event on their calendar. The event drew a decent crowd -- probably just over 30 (a good number of them adventure-racing-types).

Friday Nov 8, 2002 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

I put my bike on the trainer in the basement and did 30 minutes.

Thursday Nov 7, 2002 #

running 25:00 [2]

Shuffled around a bit. My left leg was a bit sore -- on the drive home from last night's training it got sore.

Wednesday Nov 6, 2002 #

running 20:00 [2]

Jogging around a bit before and after the O' practice.

orienteering 35:00 [4]

Night O' practice at SMP. I drew a control picking course (inspired by Jorgen Rostrup's latest article on training). Gene, Mike S. and Eric also ran. It was fun to get in some night O'.

running 40:00 [2]

Note

The Jayhawk basketball season starts tonight. I'd planned to set up my bike on the trainer and watch some of the game. The problem is I'm worn out. After two days of O', a flight home and a good three hours in the emergency room, I didn't get to bed until pretty late. Think I'll watch the game from a chair instead of my bike.

Day 2 red course. To try to get my orienteering working I did two things -- I came to a dead stop as I got near each control and I walked for a few steps as I left each control. This seemed to help a bit. I still didn't orienteer very well but I orienteered better than yesterday. I described it to Mook like this -- Saturday I orienteered like a had a paper bag over my head, Sunday I orienteered like a had a paper bag over my head, but it had two holes in it.

Day 1 red course at the US Champs. My legs felt good, my brain didn't. I was not orienteering well. I felt rushed and made several mistakes. I'm really struggling with my navigation.

orienteering 20:00 [2]

Exploring the model event map. The trip from the parking area to the map and back wasn't really worth the trouble.
