Note

Spent some time playing with lidar base maps to prepare for tomorrow's planning meeting.

Note

Long work day with the SWTF study session and then SWTF and rental housing on the City Commission agenda. I drove today and it is a good thing I did. We had a pretty decent storm come through town that would have caused some difficulty if I'd have been on a bike instead of in a car. A while after I got home, the tornado sirens went off. Feels a bit early for tornado season.

Note

Complete day off. I even drove to work. At lunch I bought two new bike tires. I replaced the completely worn out back tire but left the mostly-worn-out front tire on.

Long run on a course at Rockcrusher/Rockhaven. I took some strange routes to explore a bit and get more time in the terrain (the best routes used a lot of trails). I cut through a section of dense cedars on a flat hilltop. I was curious if I could find the gaps that show up in the lidar data (I could) and if those gaps would offer reasonable runnability (they didn't). It was very slow getting through.

I made a few notes on a parts of the map to make some changes.

I also had an O' training first - I came across a horse skeleton out in the woods. I'm curious about how a horse ended up there.

Some orienteering practice at Woodridge. I spent more time in rough and semi-rough terrain than I needed to.

I found an old permanent orienteering marker out in the woods. I've seen several of them at Woodridge, but I've got no idea who put them up. It wasn't PTOC or OK.

Note

Is it worth logging 15 minutes of elevated heart rate while watching the last few minutes of the KU-Mizzou game?

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. My bike started riding strangely and I noticed that the rear tire was bulging on the side - making it a bit wobbly. I made it home ok, but it is time for a new tire.

I found an old sprint course that MeanGene set and ran it as an easy night O' session. I took a few strange routes to make it a bit more interesting. Temp was falling and wind was picking up.

Here's a short video that'll give you an idea of the variety of thermal features and weather that we saw in the upper geyser basin:

Woke up before 6 a.m. So, I did headlamp skiing at Mammoth upper terraces. After skiing, the ski rental shop opened and I could exchange my boots for ones that didn't cause a blister.

I got a blister on my right foot.

Note

Yesterday felt like I was really improving. Then in the middle of the night I woke up with a horrible cough and couldn't get back to sleep for 90 minutes. I've decided to rest today - skipping a planned run (which would have been O' session 31).

My only training for the day was shoveling snow. The winter's first snow came last night.

Sunday Feb 12, 2012 #

Note

Today could have been my 31st O' training session of the year. But, it wasn't. Instead, Paul and I hiked around on the SMP map, looking at some different areas and talking about how we'd map some of the features. It was fun and interesting. But, I wouldn't normally log mapping as O' training, so I won't today. I might have to get out for s West Campus sprint tomorrow to hit 31.

I put out tapes for next weekend meet at the Overlook. I took it easy. I felt better than I expected. I had a hard time sleeping last night - woke up in the middle of the night coughing and felt worn out when I work up this morning. Moving around outside felt good.

A preview of the terrain (it is more fun that it might look from the preview):

Shuffling around at the Overlook to check some points for the upcoming meet. Slow, but felt good to be out and moving about.

On the other hand, I was coughing and hacking a lot afterwards and I'm thinking that it wasn't the best idea for helping me get over this cold.

Some orienteering training at Clinton Rockcrusher. The course was designed to have route choice options. I ran together with Eric S. We'd meet up at each control and then take different routes to the next. Fun.

We had a good turnout for the practice: Mary, Eric, Mean Gene, Fletcher and Turner. Six Lawrence residents out practicing our orienteering. I did some quick math to put than in context. To have similar turnouts (per capita), it'd take about 300 from the Boston metro area or almost 500 in the SF bay area!

PTOC meet at Wallace State Park. It was a bit cool and wet, but running was nice. I ran ok. I felt like I never had a good feeling, but never had a bad feeling either. The forest is a bit thorny in places, but it is bunchy - so you can weave around and avoid the worst thorns. Here's the course:

Angie B did a bunch of the mapping, set the course and made the chili that was waiting at the finish line.

Warming up.

Friday Feb 3, 2012 #

Note

No training, not even a work commute. But, we had a nice pot luck with some OKers. The highlight may have been Clemintine exploring the house, finding a copy of the Shawnee Mission Park O' map and then announcing "oh, a treasure map!"
