other 30:00 [2]

I got on my skis and shuffled around on West Campus. It wasn't all that much fun - the snow was either icy or a crust that would break now and then.

other 20:00 [1]

Light shoveling. We only had another inch or so of snow.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

I'd initially planned on running, but I was just feeling sleepy when I got home. The rowing machine was enough to break a good sweat and do a little bit of something.

In other news, Mary told me that the park office called to find out which roads we would need plowed for the A-meet if there is any snow. They're also working on a press release. They really are very good to work with. I think that says a lot about the relationship that PTOC built up with them over the years (going back to the mid 1970s, I guess) and the relationship that Mary, Dick and Paul (and Mike and others I imagine) have built up over the last year or so.

other 55:00 [1]

Shoveling snow. We had about 5-7 inches of very wet and heavy snow. Shoveling was tough work. It was enough for me today.

SLOC's "Runt" at Rockwoods. I got tired. I also had lots of little misses - nothing big but I was frequently off a little bit, like begin a line too high for a control of expecting the control to be a line higher than it was.

The snow wasn't much trouble but it was getting slippery as the day went (and as the temps warmed).

The prizes were pretty sweet:

Note

Some minor soreness (probably from all the shoveling?) and a bit of a drive to get to St Louis inspired me to take a day off. I did watch a bit of ski racing. First the world champs "skiathlon" and then a bit of the Birkebeiner. I don't really know much about the level of competition, but I'm thinking that Ali's result is pretty darn good. Alex J's result looks strong, too.

other 30:00 [1]

I had another 1.5 inches or so of snow to shovel. I also had some stiff muscles from yesterday.

running 50:00 [2]

Running to work. I'd thought I might be able to drive, but the street hasn't been cleared and I don't think my little Toyota would make it. I did a couple of hours of work at home and then ran to the office - some packed snow, some pavement, some deep snow and a little ice. Mostly fun.

I hitched a ride home and even made a quick stop at Dillon's where I bought a 12 pack of caffeine free diet coke for Mary.

2 sessions of snow shoveling. Tough work, but I paced myself. We had something around 9 inches of snow (and a chance for a bit more in a few hours).

A little bit of skiing on West Campus with Mary. Fun.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row. It was a perfect warm up for watching tonight's basketball game...but it might leave me a little tired for tomorrow's snow shoveling.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 25:00 [2]

Headlamp jog on the trails at Clinton. My legs were a bit tired but not too bad.

I'm watching the local TV coverage of a big gas explosion and fire in KC. Terrible.

Training at Rockcrusher. This was fun. Ulrik was sick, so it was just Jenny and I. It was a good race. Jenny got me by about a minute or so. She's a lot better at running through Kansas forest than she was in the fall.

Some crazy Kansas weather. Two days ago we had snow. Yesterday was warm - maybe 60 F. Today was warm in the a.m. but had fallen to 40 when we started and 37 when we finished (with a strong wind).

Hanging tapes at Rockcrusher. Felt slow.

I also sketched in a couple of map revisions/additions.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Very easy day...row, row. I actually planned to do nothing. I don't think I'm sick, but I've noticed that I was feeling a little not-quite-normal. I also have been going to be early and sleeping like a rock. I figure something is a little off, so a very easy day was called for.

Other than rowing, I played around with some of the data on 3 point shots by KU basketball for the first half of the conference season:

Checking some controls and looking at the area where they're planning to build a new mtb trail. They've got the trail marked but haven't begun the actual construction work. I'm hoping they either make it in the next week or hold off until after the A-meet.

Very windy on the open area on the ridge top. On the radio they said gusts were over 45 mph.

My legs were tired from yesterday.

PTOC 2-hour score event at Jacomo.

I felt a bit strange when I started and kept expecting to feel better until after about an hour when I realized something was just off for the day - just no push. It was still fun.

A big surprise:

Wish I could find my old Trans Atlantic Cup bobble hat.

One of my projects for the weekend is to fix the flat (and replace the tire which is worn out) on my commuter bike.

Note

I'd planned to do some intervals on West Campus after work. But then I realized that I have to train a little less so that Anna doesn't give up on her goal of beating me. So instead of intervals, I went to a movie with Mary and then had a burrito at Freebirds on Mass.

We saw Chasing Ice. It is full of cool images of places I like (Greenland and Iceland, in particular):

MTB cycling 40:00 [1]

A short MTB ride after work. The far end of the river trail was soft/muddy, so I did a short loop and did it several times. I carried a light with me but I didn't need it until the last 4-5 minutes. At that point, I decided to just ease off and go slowly rather than stop and put on the light.

Some interesting stuff from the Bergen sprint camp (and a cool video):

This, too:

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It was a long day as I had to present a report at the CC meeting. I also was a bit surprised by this:

Orienteering training at Rockhaven with Jenny and Ulrik. We ran together (more or less) taking different routes on most legs. On the way to the last control, I said I'd take the trail route around the hill. Jenny, "c'mon, it is training," so I chased after Ulrik and Jenny up the hill...and my legs were shot. Fun.

Introduced Ulrik to the Kansas forest:

More checking of control locations at SMP after the meeting with Mike S, meangene, Paul C, Dick N. and Mary.

I was on the model area. The model is, of course, not the best part of the area. But it gives a pretty good picture of the variety of terrain on the map. Many (most?) people don't understand how to make use of model events, so I'm not sure if people will be able to learn what they should.
