cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I'd planned to do a short run, but ended up spending my evening recovering from a computer crash. I managed to recover the files for Saturday's orienteering meet. That was a relief. The laptop still won't connect to the wifi...or rather it connects to the wifi but won't connect to the internet.

Sunday Feb 27, 2011 #

rowing 30:00 [1]

Row, row, row.

I'm still feeling a little worn out, so I took it easy and stayed around the house.

I managed to get something useful done with the map and planning for Saturday's race at Dad Perry.

1 point = some alternative training.

Note

Tired.

It took me a long time to get to Texas on Thursday night/Friday morning. The snow shut down KCI for a bit. I stayed up a little too late on Friday and then had to get up a bit after 5 a.m. this morning to get to the airport.

Now, I'm home and tired. My plan for tonight is to just take it easy and see how I feel.
7 PM

orienteering race 43:32 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (18:32 @3) + (15:00 @4) *** 6.81 km (6:23 / km) +72m 6:04 / km
24c

PTOC night score event at Bonner Park. I didn't do a warm up, opting to start a bit easy and gradually increase the effort. I was tired from the recent lack of sleep and travel, so I decided to try to cut it short at 45 minutes (we had an hour) if I wasn't able to get all the controls by then.

Fun conditions - a bit of crusty snow with fog/mist.

I had a good run and got to the finish 10 seconds back of Jason E. In my last two local events I've been 23 and 10 seconds back of the best time.

Post-race meal at Arthur Bryant's with appearances by Pete, Raymond, Nathan, Paul, Dick and Dan.

5 points = an orienteering competition.

Note

Drove to work so I'd have my car to drive to the airport. If the weather cooperates I'll be in Texas in a few hours. Texas?!?

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 50:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton with the Trailhawks (including Raymond). I read the map a bit on the way out, but didn't look at it on the way back. I felt so-so. Gary got me thinking about trying the trail marathon in May. I'd have to do a few long runs and couldn't run it very hard, but I could probably get around the course. May could be warm. I'll give it some thought.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It was a bit chilly this a.m. (16F).

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

1 point for today = either an earned rest or some x-training.

Monday Feb 21, 2011 #

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging on trails and in the terrain at Rockcrusher. When I ran yesterday the temp was in the 70s. Today it was low 30s.

2 points = run + terrain.

I also put in 2+ hours of fieldchecking. One area I checked had been a field several decades ago. It has since turned into a mix of grass, head high saplings, young cedars and large older cedars. I should probably just map it as green. But, I spent some time poking around and finding some of the little open areas (rough open and rough open with vertical green). The laser scan data is so good that it was pretty straightforward to map - though some of the decisions were still tricky. We'll never use any of the little yellow areas, but it was kind of fun to put them on the map.

Sunday Feb 20, 2011 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

I put together a base map of the Longview area at Perry Lake. We have an old map (one of the white contour maps), so the area has been used for orienteering. I don't think it has been used since the early 1980s.

I jogged around exploring the area. I stopped a few times to take a close look at the map. I walked most of the hills. My legs are tired from yesterday.

Some of the terrain and Longview is very pleasant - open Oak forest. Here's a 30 second clip on one of the nicer bits:

2 points = run + terrain. I carried the base map and read it quite a bit, but it doesn't earn a point for that.

Yesterday was worth 5 points (an orienteering race).

10 AM

orienteering race 58:29 [4] *** 6.82 km (8:34 / km) +261m 7:12 / km
ahr:164 max:174 19c

PTOC event at Camp Jayhawk. The area and map are new. The forest was a bit thick. It was thorny, too.

I ran reasonably well. Physically, I'm not especially strong these days. But the effort felt good. I drifted a little a couple of times. Two weak routes. 2-3 I changed my mind after I saw Gene ahead of me taking the route I'd initially planned. I should have just stuck behind Gene, but I couldn't resist the chance to test the routes in real time. 14-15 I took a chance that there would be an old trail or even road along the stream. It turned out to be really rough and slow.

I've yet to see full results, but Matt B. got me by 23 seconds. It is fun to see the young guys improving. But it is more fun to see them improving and finish a little ahead of them. Training should help.

running 10:00 [1]

Easy jogging to warm up a little.

I ran with the head cam. Unfortunately, the battery wasn't charged so after about the first minute the cam shut down.

cycling 45:00 [3]

Work commute.

Feeling much better.

I'd have done an easy run, but we hosted an OK potluck and meeting. The meeting seemed to go well. Good food. Good company.

George brought four bottles from the Burnham McCleary Cellars.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Something is off. Maybe getting sick?

Work commute.

Wednesday Feb 16, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The temp for the trip home was 60F. It felt strange.

rowing 25:00 [1]

The plan was to run with the Trailhawks. But I didn't leave work until it was too late to meet them. At home I decided to Row, row, ro...rather than go for a short jog. That was lazy.

Tuesday Feb 15, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

After work met Mary, Raymond and Jenny, Dick and Nancy, and Gene and Dee at Encore. Really nice dinner and good company. It was foggy and dark for the trip home.

Monday Feb 14, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Some icy spots in the morning, but I managed to stay upright.

GPS + video + map from today's training.
12 PM

orienteering 36:53 [2] *** 2.13 mi (17:18 / mi) +64m 15:50 / mi

Orienteering course at Rockcrusher at a slow pace. The effort was higher than it should have been because of the snow and slippery bits. Fun. The course was simple.

4 points = run + >90 minutes + terrain + navigation.

running 1:05:00 [2]

Jogging to/from the course and a bit extra. The jogging was a mix of terrain and trail (mostly trail).

Saturday Feb 12, 2011 #

Note

Video + GPS + map from Thursday evening. The video shows one of the two courses I ran. The course was out first-timer course from our NOD event (and reused for Geography Awareness Week). The auto exposure on the camera makes it look brighter than it really was. I had some trouble reading detail on the map due to the weak light.

orienteering 55:00 [2] ***

Most of this was testing the four courses for the March 5 OK event at Dad Perry Park. I think it will be fun. I need to tweak a couple of control locations and it wouldn't hurt to spend a little time with the map.

The snow is melting quickly. The temp was around 50 when I was running. There was still plenty of snow on the trails.

I've been a bit lazy with my point tracking, I'll try to fix that.

3 points = run + navigation + terrain (mostly snowy trails)

running 15:00 [2]

I did a short interview with a UDK reporter about orienteering and then went for a jog on campus.

I also did 2 sprint courses. The snow on the ground made the courses (which I'd run before) seem a bit different. I ran one of the courses with the headcam. I created a little movie and sped it up. The effect is kind of strange.

I thought this was pretty cool...from Monday night's KU-Mizzou game:

running 25:00 [2]

Some jogging on West Campus. It was pretty cold. Temp of 7F and a bit of a north wind. Snow was falling. It wasn't nice fluffy flakes, more like little stinging pellets. It was fun to be out. It was more fun with a tail wind.

The forecast kept me from biking to work. The snow didn't actually start until almost 5 p.m.

I also did 15 minutes of shoveling when I got home.

Monday Feb 7, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute...first time back on the bike since I crashed last week.

Near campus I saw a car go through a stop sign without slowing at all. The driver probably didn't see it, but he went through the stop right in front of a police car. The PD flipped on the lights and fish-tailed through the icy intersection and caught the driver in about a block. Nice.

Funny how satisfying it was to see the driver get stopped when it would have been better if the driver had just stopped at the sign.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row. Neck was uncomfortable by the end.

Sunday Feb 6, 2011 #

running 1:15:00 [2]

I ran in the terrain on a basemap of the section of Rockcrusher that is east of the road where we usually park. The base was 2.5 meter contours + OL Laser lutning image at 1:5,000. It was fun to explore a the area and having the good basemap meant I had plenty of stuff to look at. Exploring was fun.

I did a lot of map reading, but it was mostly aimless, so it doesn't count as orienteering training. At one point I did some coyote line orienteering.*

The snow made it slow. The noeprene socks kept my feet warm.

*following the map as precisely as possible while also following a set of coyote tracks through the snow.

running 35:00 [2]

Running at Rockcrusher, to the start of the orienteering course and then back to the car.

There is enough snow in the terrain to make it slower and harder than usual to run. I was a little surprised that I didn't see any other footprints out there. I did see plenty of animal tracks.
1 PM

orienteering 19:07 [4] 1.72 km (11:07 / km) +49m 9:44 / km

Orienteering training at Rockcrusher. Snow made it a bit slower than it really should have been. I actually worked hard (and didn't get under 10 min/km).

I haven't done the QR, but you can see the headcam video to get an idea of the snow and the terrain:

At about the 3:50 mark in the video I fell trying to get up a little steep bit. Then i fell again a few seconds later.

Friday Feb 4, 2011 #

Note

Finally slept well. 9.5 hours of needed sleep.

rowing 30:00 [1]

Row, row, row.

Thursday Feb 3, 2011 #

Note

I need a day off.

I slept really poorly last night. My neck was really uncomfortable and I could not stay asleep. I felt off all day at work. I almost fell asleep when I first got home.

Wednesday Feb 2, 2011 #

running 45:00 [2]

I worked at home all morning and then ran from home to work. The blizzard of Oz kept me from biking or driving. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get out of the neighborhood until the city plowed the street. They hadn't plowed by noon, so I jogged to work. I printed out four sprint maps (West Campus, the Daisy Hill basemap, Mt Oread and Downtown). All but about 600 meters of my run was on an O' map.

I put in a good hour+ of snow shoveling. My arms are a bit tired. My shoulder is a little stiff. My neck is still sore/stiff, but much better than yesterday.

Note

Head cam video and GPS track from Sunday's event:

http://www.attackpoint.org/sessiondata.jsp?session...

The video covers the first 42 minutes or so.

Note

Feeling a bit uncomfortable after the bike crash. My hip isn't a problem, but my left arm and my neck aren't comfortable. The neck is strange and a much bigger annoyance. Shoveling the driveway was enough to aggravate both the arm and neck.

I think I'll take a day off and rest; plan to try something tomorrow.

We're in the midst of a big snow storm. High winds, plenty of snow and cold. City Hall shut down this afternoon. I'll plan to work from home for at least part of tomorrow.
