cycling 30:00 [1]

Enough time on the trainer to break a good sweat.

Thursday Feb 27, 2003 #

running 40:00 [2]

Jogged around the neighborhood. It was snowing when I drove home and when I started running. The snow stopped after I'd run about ten minutes. I threw in about ten minutes of running at an honest effort (doing 70/20s).

running 30:00 [2]

I jogged around a bit. The footing was a bit slick in a few places. I almost fell down twice. I cut the run short so I'd be home in time to watch the b-ball game.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Riding the trainer while watching the first half of KU-Texas A&M. I worked a bit harder when KU was on defence. Big Dub hurt his shoulder again. Bummmer.

Tuesday Feb 25, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Spent some easy time on the trainer.

Monday Feb 24, 2003 #

Note

The responsible thing to do would be to take a day off. So, I did.

You can check out a bit of Saturday's O' session at Maternity Wells. A scanned section of the map is at: http://okansas.blogspot.com/maps/mw1.jpg

running 1:35:00 [2]

The last SSS2 session was a trail run from Prison Camp to the ridge between Bear Canyon and Sabino Canyon (i.e. the top of Sycamore Canyon). On the way back, I ran a steady and relatively hard pace up the climb from Sycamore Canyon up to "Watch Pass." Mook picked up the pace a bit and dropped me easily on the climb.

Control picking at Maternity Well. The map was interesting -- a flattish area with 40 foot contours. The mapper created a dotted line symbol that represented the bottom of reentrants. So, despite the 40 foot contour interval, you got a decent picture of the land forms. I thought the O' terrain around Tucson sucked. But, this area was nice and a lot of fun. The altitude, just under 5000 feet, made the little climbs a bit tough.

The plan had been to do a trail run in a near by canyon (where bigfoot had been reportedly seen). But, I thought the O' at Maternity Well was enough fun that I ran another course. Before running, we took a lunch break and did an hour or so of hiking in a nearby area. I worked pretty hard on the course and orienteered much better than in the morning.

Mook and I ran in Sabino Canyon. I read on the internet that Sabino Canyon would be good terrain for bigfoot, but I find that hard to believe. After a bit of a warmup, the trail climbed for a good bit, then leveled off. We ran out and back.

running 40:00 [2]

My legs were tired from the morning run, so we took it extra slow. Mook and I ran in the Tucson Mountains on a trail called "Yetman."

Thursday Feb 20, 2003 #

Note

Work and travel today. SSS2 begins tomorrow. I should get in plenty of easy running/exploring and maybe even some O' sessions. I'm looking forward to it.

Wednesday Feb 19, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Spent a bit of time on the trainer. Tonight's game was KU-CU (much better than last night). As usual, I worked fairly hard when KU was on defense, then took it easy when they had the ball.

Tuesday Feb 18, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Spent a bit of time on the trainer. It felt ok. I watched a few minutes of the Mizzou--Nebraska game. It was painful. Watching Mizzou is like running through thorns in the heat and with a bad map. I guess it might make you tough, but it isn't much fun.

Monday Feb 17, 2003 #

running 55:00 [2]

Jogging around at Kill Creek. It was a bit muddy making for heavy shoes and a slow pace.

I did three short control picking courses at Kill Creek.

I jogged around at Weston Bend. I stuck to trails and deer trails for the most part. I took it easy. I carried the map and did a little bit of map reading.

Saturday Feb 15, 2003 #

running 1:00:00 [2]

I jogged at Wyandotte. I felt ok - not comfortable or normal, but not too bad either. If I'm feeling no worse tomorrow, I'll run a bit longer and might do some O'. Today is the first day I've gone Ibuprofen-free. So far, so good.

running 20:00 [2]

Yesterday's jogging didn't do me any harm, so I shuffled around a bit tonight. Snorkel invited me to run with him at Knob Noster tomorrow and there are 15 and 27 mile trail races at SMP. Both of those options (O' with Snorkel or the trail races) sound fun. But, I plan to try shuffling around slowly for maybe 30-60 minutes instead.

I jogged, very slowly, for 20 minutes at SMP. I did the first few controls of tonight's night O' course (I started in the dusk and went without a light). Breathing isn't very comfortable. I don't feel worse after running than I did when I started. I'll see how I feel tomorrow. I guess there isn't any point in overdoing it. A couple of days of forced rest was fine, but I'm ready to do some running.

Wednesday Feb 12, 2003 #

Note

I'm a lot less sore today. The swelling on my back and below the rib cage went down a lot. Still sore though. I'll go for a little walk in a few minutes and see how it feels. My plan (hope) is still to jog around a bit tomorrow night at SMP.

Tuesday Feb 11, 2003 #

Note

Snorkel called and wanted to run the hill at Riss Lake. But, I'm still pretty sore, so I'll take another day off.

Monday Feb 10, 2003 #

Note

Ribs hurt. Day off.

PTOC had a mass start race with two loops and forking at Tall Oaks. It was fun. I wasn't sure how I'd feel (my body is sore after falling yesterday). I felt ok. Definelty not good, but I don't regret running. I didn't get into warm clothes soon enough after I finished (sloppy).

running 1:10:00 [2]

I ran at Honey Creek. I carried a USGS, an orthophoto and the park map. I was hoping the woods would be nice. Mostly it was typical KC-forest. I was a bit disappointed. I stuck to trails and read the park map. The park map was remarkably decent. When I finished, I was hungry. I thought I had a couple of Clif Bars in my bag. I didn't.

running 1:10:00 [2]

After a break of maybe 15 minutes, I ran at Monkey Mountain. I carried a USGS and the park map. This time the park map was terrible. Whoever drew the trails couldn't read contours (and must have been drawing them from memory). MM is within a mile of Honey Creek. You might be able to set up a rogaine-like event using both areas. About 20 minutes into the run I was dreaming of food. About 22 minutes into the run I remembered I had a couple of granola bars in the glove compartment. Wish I'd remembered it sooner. I ran over the top of what must be Monkey Mountain. It is a decent climb (even Mook would probably consider it a climb). On the back side of MM, I was reading my map and ran into a shin-level cable stretched across the trail. I fell pretty hard.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy time on the trainer.

Note

Here is my plan for the weekend. Saturday I'll head up to the St Joe area to explore a couple of areas that look like they've got potential for O'. I'll run around, checking out the forest and terrain. I'll carry USGS maps, the park maps and orthophotos. Sunday is a PTOC meet at Tall Oaks. The cours is supposed to be 9+ km. There will be a lot of controls.

Cooooold out tonight. I put on a bunch of clothes and shuffled around the neighborhood a bit (while Snorkel ran the hill at Riss Lake).

cycling 30:00 [1]

After the run, I spent some time on the trainer. I had a tape of the second half of the KU-Nebraska game to watch. Watching basketball makes the time on the trainer go a lot quicker.

My shoulder felt almost normal. So, I went for an easy jog. After two days of rest, my legs felt good. It was fun to run in a light snow. The snow started just as I left work. When I was running there was about 1/4 inch on the ground. That's not enough for "snoepulsning."

Tuesday Feb 4, 2003 #

Note

I'm going to take another day off. I planned to jog a bit today, but my shoulder is sore and it hurts to move my arm. I fell in the woods on Sunday and landed a bit awkwardly. It is better today, but it is uncomfortable to move. I'll take another day off.

Sunday Feb 2, 2003 #

running 40:00 [2]

Jogging around on trails and roads at Wyandotte before and after an O' session. By the end I was tired. I've done a lot (for me at least) of stuff in the last nine days. It caught up to me. I'll take it easy this week.

orienteering 30:00 [5]

Control picking at Wyandotte. My legs felt heavy at the beginning and heavier at the end. The O' was fun.

Mary and I went to Indain Cave to explore. PTOC has a rough map (I think it is just USGS with a couple of minor additions). I spent a couple of hours running around reading the map. The area is really nice -- big hills and open forest. Too bad it is 1:45 to get there. I went a bit harder than I'd planned.
