orienteering 45:00 [2] ***
17c

Roger is visiting. He knows Mary and I orienteer, but he didn't really know what orienteering is. So, I set a course on West Campus and ran through it with him. He did all of the navigation, but I gave him some tips (like explaining the basic rules of the game and map symbols). He picked it up very quickly. We stopped at each control and he'd plan the next leg.

He made two small errors. We ran past an area with sprinklers watering grass at the Endowment building. Running through the sprinklers was enough of a distraction that Roger went about 40 meters too far. He also made a parallel error at a sidewalk junction among the buildings. I told him both were good examples of the sort of error that is common - getting distracted or mistaking a parallel feature.

Roger lives at altitude (~7500) and does some trail running (and is 10+ years younger than me). When we hit any uphill he pulled away even though he wasn't really pushing the pace.

Lots of fun and we got out before it was very hot (mid 70s), but it sure was humid.
