bicycling race (Bicycling Score 'O) 1:20:00 [3]
Bicycle Score 'O in Webster Groves, MO starting from Blackburn Park. This was like revisiting Zan's childhood. We didn't pass by her preschool. However, I rode by her close friend Jackie's father's house and mother's house (and thus also near the childhood home of one of Zan's Rosati-Kain classmates who was a neighborhood friend of Jackie), her close friend Katy's house (whose mother was their PE teacher and was a Mariner Girl Scout at the same time as I was), her gymnastics center, near her preschool friends' the Hunt's house (the mother is Jane Stevens, the head of the Insectarium at the Zoo), her swim teammates (Kirkwood/Webster YMCA) Emily and Becky Hoyt. Their mother and I went to the same preschool, Sacred Heart Villa, took piano lessons from the same nun, Sister Felicetta, performed in the same piano recital, and swam for the same swim team, Carondelet YMCA, and coach, Tony Isom. Also the girls' swim team coach swam under Tony on the Carondelet Y team. Rode below Zan's Grade 5-8 school, The College School of Webster Groves.
Went by the Sterling Pen Company owned by my dear friend Amy (Sterling) Sternberg's family.
Great course. I messed up badly on Control #5 and thus got only 18 of 23 controls. I should have gotten at least 3 more if I hadn't wasted so much time on #5. After Beth got to looking for #5 as she proceeded counter-clockwise around the course (I was going clock-wise), we both managed to find #5, duh, right where it should have been! After that we had 35 minutes left of the Score 'O.
Bessa (from whose parents we bought our house) skipped #5 and got all the rest and thus beat me well although I had a lead on her before I wasted time on #5.
Then Bessa invited us over for a lovely lunch with her parents and aunt and her husband and son and daughter (the latter three had also done the Bike 'O). Bessa's Mom, Janice, and my Rick worked together at CEMREL, Inc. Rick's first couple months in St. Louis he roomed in the third floor of Janice and her Rick's house (now our house)--where some of our out-of-town orienteering friends have stayed with us. This was "before children" for Janice and Rick who had done Peace Corps in Peru as Rick had on Borneo in Malaysia. Janice and her Rick (a math and also computer teacher) are leaving town August 9 to go teach at the King's School outside of Amman in Jordan.
