running 33:00 [2]

Ran in Forest Park after a lecture by Sir Michael Atiyah on Beauty and Truth in Mathematics and chatting with a 30-something fellow for an hour in the parking lot at Washington University after the talk.

walking/running 54:00 [3]

Found accidentally the Claire Gempp Davidson Memorial Conservation Area in South County on Sappington Road at Eddy & Park. About 1/2 mile of trails covered with wood chips. Nice cushy surface on which to walk and run. Lovely wooded area with a pond with turtles, frogs, and a duck with 11 ducklings.

I walked and then ran with 2-pound heavy hands. I walked 17 minutes to warm up, then ran 32 minutes, and then walked 5 minutes to cool down.

This was after my cardio-pulmonary stress test at MO Baptist Medical Center. This consisted of pedaling on a stationary bicycle with increasing difficulty in pedaling while breathing through a mouth tube with my nose clamped. I will phone the doctor later for the results to see if we found out anything about a potential cause for the shortness of breath when I go up a flight of stairs and also my quads say "Please send oxygen!"

Note
(rest day)

Felt pretty much OK after the 3 days of orienteering. Since I had promptly and continuously treated my twisted left ankle on Sunday, it was fine today. Long day of teaching and tutoring.

orienteering race 3:40:00 [3]

DNFed on Brown Course on Day 3 of 2007 U.S. Team Trials. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area map. I did manage to get the first 6 (of 11 controls) within 180 minutes. Walked most of the time. Was pretty exhausted. I got more aerobic exercise for my meet fee than a lot of the other orienteerers.

In spite of not completing the course, I really enjoyed the whole weekend of orienteering, not just because of being with Zan. The Weather Committee for the U.S. Team Trails did a great job. Three glorious days. A bit windy on Sunday, but no problem in the woods. The meet seemed to go very smoothly. The courses were fine. Good to see old friends and meet new ones. Sorry I didn't have the opportunity to chat with Inola, the Canadian woman in my category.

And sorry I came in so late. Next time I will ask for an earlier start time. I was OT and had a late start, so folks were held up waiting for me to walk in. Sorry about that.

Thanks to all the people involved in putting on the meet.
