Note

Finally bought the tickets to switzerland. There goes the entire summer travel budget, oops. I don't have much time beforehand, since I'm coaching at the CSU ski camp, so will just try to pre-jetlag myself while still in this country. Then some days in London after WOC, to visit with grandfather and cousins, woo!

Orienteering (NEOC Rocky Woods) 1:36:18 *** 9.6 km (10:02 / km) +227m 8:58 / km
ahr:159 max:174 20c shoes: disintegrators

Oof, toughness training. It was thick, it was green, the map was dodgy in places, it was hot, I was tired, there were spiderwebs, it was rocky. Pushed through on very tired legs, slogging through high blueberry is not easy, and I wasn't very happy about the heat, either. Glad I soldiered through it, but I should have anticipated that 7.7km by Jeff Schapiro is not an easy 7.7km!

My navigation was generally ok, though I spent an extra 5 minutes cursing my way around #2, which was one of the less-accurate areas of the map. It was also my fault for not being as attentive as I should have. Slight miss on 6, when I ended up on the wrong hilltop, then clean until 13, when I was way too low on the slope, or the rock was way too high. Mostly, I was just slow out there.

rollerskiing (Classic) 1:43:00 [1] 14.0 mi (7:21 / mi)

First Littleton roll of the year, with Kathy and Clara and Meg. A beautiful morning for a ski, though calves and shins were incredibly unhappy when I was no-pole striding up the long hill. Close to explode-y, despite the slow pace. This is so frustrating.

Core Strength 40:00 [1]

Rob gave me specific instructions last week to not kill anyone, but this week he didn't say that, so I may have killed a couple first-year J2s... Good times!

Orienteering 1:44:35 [1] *** 7.73 km (13:32 / km) +258m 11:36 / km

More vetting, in the rain. Nice weather for running, these woods are super fun thanks to their complete lack of low-lying foot-catching vegetation. Wheee orienteering!

Peter's Hill Park-O, by Vadim. A nice course that used the hill, naturally. My legs felt surprisingly good, but I was quite the goofmuppet in the woods. Not adjusting well to the out-of-date map, made a lot of bobbles up there. I think that's enough running for now, time to attempt to not run for a few days and let everything heal/recover/get stronger.

Note

Does anyone have an extra heart rate strap from a Garmin 305 that they're not using? I left mine in the hotel at the Billygoat, and the hotel has been unable to find it. I guess I'll just have to buy a new one, but if somebody has a strap they don't use, I'd love to take it off your hands!

Running 7:33 [1] 1.29 km (5:52 / km) +15m 5:33 / km

Orienteering 1:05:35 [1] 9.33 km (7:02 / km) +37m 6:53 / km
42c shoes: Pink shiny! (v2)

Vetting some UMass courses, easy pace.

Running 8:32 [1] 1.38 km (6:11 / km) +23m 5:43 / km
shoes: Pink shiny! (v2)

Orienteering 1:39:31 [1] 7.71 km (12:54 / km) +315m 10:43 / km
51c shoes: disintegrators

Earl's Trails vetting work, even easier pace. Mucho walking on the uphills. Right calf is sore, but left achilles is fine. My legs kind of lost their pep at some point today.

Note

Pulled a tick from my leg on Sunday night; now there is a lump, similar to what my body does when bitten by a mosquito. I'm hoping this is a reaction from my body, not from the tick... it definitely had blood inside it when I squashed it after. gross. ticks are gross.

Achilles seems to be doing alright, and with no big plans to kill me over the weekend, I may be on the upswing. I'm really looking forward to a month of good training, and less racing. So sick of driving. Yesterday, Maine. Today, Newton. Tomorrow, Amherst. Thursday, Newton.

Running 1:23:00 9.0 mi (9:13 / mi)
shoes: Pink shiny! (v2)

Back in MA, joined the CSU juniors for their trail tempo workout, but forgot my garmin. An excellent time spent running around rolling, soft dirt trails. Achilles is feeling fine, though legs felt a little heavy on the steeper hills; fine on the flats. Kept the breathing to 2 steps in, 2 steps out, and slowed down any time I got to 2/1.

Running 48:05 [1] 4.74 mi (10:09 / mi) +210m 8:55 / mi

I went to Maine to do a recovery jog. Or something like that. I love how this just feels like nothing. Also, this may have been one of the most beautiful days I can remember.
