rollerskiing (Classic) 1:15:58 7.26 mi (10:28 / mi) +70m 10:10 / mi
ahr:119 max:171

Specific strength workout with CSU, just the girls today. Working with Katie to get her to "fall" up the hill - in other words, tip forward from the ankles - she leans way forwards, both poles miss the pavement, and she falls face first into the pavement. That's the sort of commitment we ask for in CSU - when I say fall, you fall, dammit!

Katie was fine, and could laugh about it. Good improvements all around. Nothing like a little coaching motivated kids to actively clear my mind and remove some stress.

Elbow is sore. Not sure if I've just been lax on PT, or skiing too much, or I just exhibit stress through getting sore elbows.

rollerskiing (Skate) 48:14 4.81 mi (10:02 / mi) +244m 8:40 / mi
ahr:130 max:180

Coaching Corey, good stuff. Then an hour or two talking about plans and such. And I'm DONE coaching for the weekend...

Orienteering (Control setting) 1:24:00 6.7 km (12:32 / km) +191m 10:59 / km

Two trips, first to set the eastern controls, then out to the northwest corner. No compass, and had some trouble at times, but they all ended up in the right spot, except #9 on the red course, which was supposed to be on top of a hill, but the hill was too rocky, so I ended up putting it behind a boulder. Should have left more time for this, I didn't get back until 10:30.

Left early to earn some bucks and coached some masters up in Lincoln, they were attentive and quick learners. Not enough skiing to count as a workout for me.

A quick sunrise jaunt up Peabody. The climb to the ridge (practicing my bearings, just headed due north from the end of Turner rd) was nice and open, but the ridgeline was full of small pines and kind of trashy. Practiced more bearings, heading west, until I was at the top, thick vegetation most of the way up. Then due south to hit the saddle and Trout Club rd, which led me down some steep rocky ground/cliffs (depends on the mapper's style, I suppose, I would have gone with cliffs, since the descent was more of a controlled slide than anything else), a short bit of nice woods and then some recently logged patches, complete with pointy branches and prickers. Finally hit the logging road I was aiming for and jogged on home. Nice way to start the day! And, there was snow on top - not much, but enough to make me excited.

rollerskiing (Skate) 25:00 [1] 4.0 mi (6:15 / mi)

Coaching and specific strength with Ken. Very cold out, never actually broke a sweat. 45min total skiing, but about half of that was actually aerobic.
6 PM

Running warm up/down 19:00 [1] 1.74 mi (10:55 / mi)

Finished up putting out loggers for the day around 5:15, which was made more interesting due to the participation of Jeff's son, who is 4. Having him along slowed things down considerably, but not as much as the hour we wasted looking around a site that just wasn't ideal for brook trout breeding grounds. At least for that part, I had the kid on my shoulders, so we moved faster by about a magnitude of five. I guess he didn't have preschool because of Veterans day, and Jeff's wife just left for travel for work. Orienteering with a four-year-old on your shoulders should be a new sport - you have to totally change your micro route choices.

Anyway, by the time I got back to Weston, it was full dark and cold, and the fire wasn't doing much to warm the house yet, so I went for a run to try and warm myself. Up the hill and back down, mostly by moonlight, by headlamp in the shadowy bits.

Also includes the six minutes of running that I did in the morning, after skiing - I don't have waders yet (working on that), and I had to go change two of the loggers we'd put out yesterday, which meant thigh-deep cold water, in two different sites on the Greendale. I prepped myself by jogging around in circles until I started to sweat, wore o-shoes, which helped because they won't retain much water. And actually, I was a comfortable temperature (as opposed to hypothermic) by the time I had run back to the car.

Core Strength 30:00 [1]

By the time I finished this, the fire had a big enough sphere of influence that I could make dinner.

Yoga/Stretching/PT (Stretching) 10:00 [0]

25min, feeling stiff and tired.

Running warm up/down 24:30 [2] 1.8 mi (13:37 / mi)

To/from start.
7 AM

Orienteering 1:29:56 7.38 km (12:11 / km) +268m 10:19 / km
ahr:158 max:189

Frazzled.

Misunderstood Ali's email and set a course as normal, instead of a bearing-ish thing. Anyway, I forgot to print the maps the night before, and couldn't get into the printer room in the morning, so told Ali to start copying the map (I'd emailed the electronic copy of the map), picked her up (after hanging up on her when I called, mistaking the words "should I keep copying my map?" for "hello you've reached Ali's voicemail..."), and then misheard her say 8:30, when I thought she had said 8:45, my planned finish time.

Set a goal of trying to move with fluidity - no stopping to check out the map if I don't need to, and that worked mostly, until I got to #9, and got way confused by an extra trail, wandered around in the green for a while, eventually bailed, twisted my "good" ankle, got to a trail junction, which didn't line up with the map. Lost about 20min in that area. 10 was on the way back to the car, then a long run back, and I was still 10min later than planned, and Ali was about to start searching for me. Overall life fail.

rollerskiing (Skate) 1:29:40 13.42 mi (6:41 / mi) +184m 6:24 / mi

Skiing with Ali, life is much better with a training partner! Morning came too early, and I was creaky and tired and hungry and whinier than normal, also felt super winded. HRM wasn't picking up, so I don't know how hard I actually went, but it felt wicked hard, for a not-so-fast pace. 1:05 of poling, ~25min of that double poling, and elbow felt alright.

Yoga/Stretching/PT (Stretching) 10:00 [0]

5min post-skiing, another 10 post-jog.
2 PM

Running 19:09 1.82 mi (10:31 / mi) +76m 9:19 / mi
ahr:151 max:173

Took the rent-a-dogs out for a spin, while doing laundry and cooking a squash, for butternut squash-sage gnocchi. I might have more time in my life if I cooked less and ate more burritos instead.

Core Strength 19:00 [1]

12min core, then mostly PT stuff.

Cycling (Commute) 10:00 [1] 2.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

R elbow, R knee, and L achilles are unhappy with me this morning, and my tailbone feels bruised too. But, there was SNOW! on the GROUND!

Note

Wasted possible training time trying to polish up the WSF grant for the ski-o team, after spending all day huffing PVC glue while making temperature logger protector things. Multi tasking a bit too much and the quality of everything is suffering for it, need to cut back...
