Pretty disappointed. That time was so far outside any of my expected finish times, and I have no idea as to why. Nothing went wrong, nothing "happened", the only conclusion I can actually draw isn't one I like, that I just truly suck up sustained hills. I'm an athlete because I am competitive, I compete because I want to achieve success, success having been defined somehow beforehand. I did not succeed yesterday. I was suck.

Hotter than predicted, I was getting heat shivers by the second water stop at 2.75mi. Started slowly, didn't feel like much work, HR was a few beats high but that was the heat, I was still in low threshold. It was appalling how early I had to start walking, pretty sure I did some of that before mile 3. Around then I also began to notice a blister under my 4th toe on the right. Legs were the limiting factor.

Then there was lots of slogging, I spent a loooong time just counting. walk 30 steps, run 180, keep going. My feet really hurt, probably should have worn trainers. Thighs hurt for most of it, calves were generally fine except for the walking bits. I can understand why PG didn't want to do this again, there wasn't much joy in slowly slogging up a mountain under the sun. Sort of felt like I was Frodo, ascending Mt. Doom.

I hate being slow. I'm just angry now. There is nothing I would have changed about either my preparation or my race - I just don't have the VO2 or body type to do shit like this successfully.
