Arrgh! When I look at the graph of splits for the Red course I see my big failures on CP's 5 and 6. I had to relocate on both of those. And on CP 5 I was searching for the wrong boulder. There were two boulders in the circle, one big black dot, and one small black dot. I went to the big boulder three times before I realized I should have been going to the small one. After that I was more conservative.
I will also note that both CPs 5 and 6 were "attacked" by bears. CP 5 had been bent and pushed over, and gallon water bottles had been crushed and either bitten or clawed. The setters saw 5 bears in that area when they put out the controls, so I picked a bad area to spend 30 minutes.
By the time I finished red I had some confidence back and did the Brown course with little trouble.
