Legs felt heavy from the get go, and never felt like I got going, didn't see much option on the long leg apart from cutting the felled areas but took those as they looked, Matt went past me on the road, just too fast, then hit the green shit, was super slow and struggle to get through it, happy to pop out close to where I thought I was, pretty simple to the map change, although Matt passed me again in the green. 7 was in some green stuff as well and Matt passed me again right before the control, and took off, got out to the open and could see Matt off on some hill looking lost, 8-9 ok and Matt passed me AGAIN on the way to 10, going in, went off the vege boundary, up through a sort of re-entrant, over a hill in the middle of it, and onto a ridge, not really any re-entrant close by (well in the 2m visibility we had) was definitely on the ridge and went back and forwards a couple of times, seeing Matt, Magnus, Adien and Dom, decided to bail to the road, and came back in off the hill on the other side, felt like I went over a hill and onto a ridge, again nothing, had a quick look either side and then just went west, and fell over it, called out but only Dom heard lost lots of time here. stuffed up going into 11 as well, seem odd. Got to drinks same time as Aiden, then I went round open he went straight and was faster, 12 was dodgy as well, contours everywhere, 13 just went up the big hill, then 14 again was whacked, seemed miles away and nothing made sense plus the big open area not on the map. Rest of the course was ok, was confused on 18, think there should be another contour between those 2 hills, and also started to die after 23, but managed to pull it together in the finish and take out the split even after Matt had given up and jogged to the last control to have a crack at it.

Someone really should have protested that course, 10 was bingo and how the hell the person putting the control out was confident of its placing is a mystery, also the area 12-14 was rubbish as well, there is a whole hill system missing in the white right next to it

10:48 a.m.. Christchurch.
Course: Long 7.4 km 490 m
Part 1 ) http://www.gregjflynn.byethost17.com/maps/show_map...
Part 2) http://www.gregjflynn.byethost17.com/maps/show_map...

Time lost:
1 - 20sec drifting left and re-entrant being way bigger than I expected
2 - 1.5 min, thought I had climbed enough, then nothing made sense apart from something lower, so went down only to have to come back up
3 - 3 min, nothing made sense going across the slope, overshot
4 - 1 min, stopped to stretch back on track as really sore, cracked good this time
6 - 4 min, area before control had heaps of detail, thought it was the broken ground and a control was on a bank (which was also a clearing/ the only one I thought I saw all day) got really confused until I found the cliffs
7 - 6 mins, that whole area is whacked, the control is right above the swamp change where I ran through it (moved gps to match map), there were patches of yellow/green stripe everywhere apart from the ones on the map
10 - 1 min, at least having to go round all the extra gorse not mapped
11 - 30 sec, thought I had Marquited my knee in a hole going down the slope just out of 10 and stopped to take a moment
13 - 20 sec, gullies just didn't seem right, hesitated
18 - 20 sec, fell through branches into hole, smacking and skinning my shin, stopped to yell some abuse
24 - 20 sec, green and just didn't seem right, was another control right before, cant work out what the hell it would have been on

All up over 17 mins lost before the map change, also in the period after 7 I just could not be bothered with that shit and was not trying at all (winsplits says I lost over a min on 9, but that was just not caring, all other time lost I've taken from my gps). Early on just could not get my height right and nothing made sense most of the time, I also lost a bit on every climb as I'm just not hill strong. Went straight on 7 as round looked like the same climb, but went round on 16 and 23, both time I think were better.

After the map change I bucked my ideas up a little bit, mainly as I just wanted to get it over with, and ran ok, started passing people as well, including Tim who had caught me 6 mins at 6 then got away from me. Thought I managed to finish reasonably well (relatively) which is the opposite to last week when my body started packing it in a bit, but did struggle a bit from 21 on with a blister on the ball of my right foot due to always being on the same side of the slope.

Over all the area is too steep (and I wasn't the only one saying that) and I wasn't that impressive with a) the mapping in parts (would be nice to see who did what areas) and b) the course, I just expected more from Carsten, very few pure contouring legs, and a lot of legs that climbed 5+ contours on the same slope.
