Orienteering race (Sprint) 17:25 intensity: (11 @1) + (14 @2) + (13 @3) + (4:34 @4) + (12:13 @5) ** 2.15 km (8:05 / km)
ahr:166 max:176 spiked:12/17c shoes: Inov8 xtalon 212 B

Sprint at Donner Memorial State Park. Nice short , fast course. It was great to not be doing a half- hour of sprinting at the beginning of a race weekend. It was open forest running, so the strategy was pretty much turn the right direction and run. As long as you were headed the right way you generally didn't have to go far to see the feature you were headed for, although in many cases there were multiple similar features and you needed to be careful you were going to the right one. One error at number 11 of about 1 minute tops. I was too far south and it was difficult to tell what was the yellow. Started checking various trees and didn't find the control. Looked at the hillside for #12 and thought I saw the right boulder and went a little further north, continuing to look for my control. Then I actually DID see #12 and figured it out from there. Given how far off I was for a fairly short leg, I did a poor job of rough compass work on this one. Currently in 1st place F50+ for the Western States Champs.

WU/CD warm up/down 9:05 intensity: (15 @1) + (8 @2) + (1:39 @3) + (6:55 @4) + (8 @5) 1.16 km (7:50 / km) +2m 7:46 / km

Orienteering (Scramble) 1:18:00 [1] ** 1.0 mi (1:18:01 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 xtalon 212 B

Scramble at spooner lake. Harvey came with me. The plan was basically to go around the lake and get the controls that seemed reasonable along that route. Harvey's been having difficulty with the altitude, however, so after the first two controls (100, 101) it was apparent we wouldn't make it around the lake in the time limit. We went back to the assembly area and got the two controls near there and finished. Due to a lack of entries in our category, we were second in mixed vet. Ha! I was happy with this plan because I wasn't tiring myself out before the A races.

Running 40:00 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (25:00 @3) 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 F-lite 195

Went to AVC to run the last mile of Mark Covert's 45 year streak. Pretty cool to be part of some history like that. There were about 100 people there I would guess. We just did an easy mile through the campus. Afterwards there was cake and lots of picture taking. I don't actually know Mark, but a lot of people I run with do. I was hoping to maybe say something to him, but there was too much hoopla going on. He was mostly talking to old friends from easy early running days and the media. In addition to the mile with Covert, I jogged to AVC and walked back home.

Running intervals 35:20 intensity: (4:22 @1) + (8:01 @2) + (8:02 @3) + (14:55 @4) 2.31 mi (15:17 / mi)
ahr:136 max:161 shoes: Barefoot

HDR interval workout at the track. 3-2-1-2-3-2-1-2-3 with 2 min recovery after each interval. I arrived late, so didn't do any separate warm-up. Just took the whole workout pretty easy. I didn't see a reason to push with so much coming up this weekend. Plus I'd already done some easy mileage this morning as well.

Running (trails) 1:30:54 intensity: (2:21 @1) + (14 @2) + (18:57 @3) + (55:49 @4) + (13:33 @5) 5.64 mi (16:07 / mi) +227m 14:20 / mi
ahr:154 max:172 shoes: Inov8 xtalon 212 B

The plan was to do an easy six mile trail run. Between the heat and the hills, this really wiped me out. I started out doing an easy pace and taking a walking/hydration break once a mile. At about four miles, I was really feeling the heat. I couldn't really jog much more, even downhills, and my legs were really tired. I figure I probably had minor heat exhaustion. Anyway, I decided to avoid any more uphill so I headed off trail straight to the road and then took the road back to the car. I half jogged/half walked this part. I didn't want to push too much in the heat and risk being blown for the Sierra Summerfest next week.
