Running race 57:40 [5] 6.6 km (8:44 / km) +275m 7:14 / km
shoes: Inov-8 X Talon 190

Started off badly found another control on the way to one, then got a bit confused on way to 3.

Stuffed up 6 really badly, i think i lost 2 or 3 minutes to jess. so brian got past me here, i was with him at 7 when he was punching it and i hadn't found 6 yet. lost 30 secs on 8 circled some extra green. 9 i had to climb to. up to 14 good, must have had about a minute lead over brian after passing him to 13 then saw a lovely abstract route to 15 and thought it would be good, lost a minute to brian and was with him at 15 again. running with him to 18 then did 19 really well and thought i'd got a good lead on brian again so tried to smash the rest and see how far away i could get, only about 50 secs. so 2nd i think. physically wasnt feeling very good, but it was a lot of fun. definitely enjoyed the monument the most ever.

still a bit sick and tired

Note

JWOC 2013

really sad that its all over. wish i had one more, or I started decent training one year before.

The long was quite a disappointment, was pretty bleak the rest of the day and just physically so tired. After only one big navigational mistake of like 2 minutes, I was really surprised to be so far down on the results. It was mainly me just crashing physically after half an hour, I'm pretty sure this was mostly due to illness. My heart rate after 5 minutes of warm up was 180, and my resting heart rate that nite was at like 90. Could've been +- 8 minutes faster with better route choices and not being sick. Would've been happy with top 60.

After looking at the GPS I knew I could run decently for half an hour and that's all I needed for the middle quali. I was really calm for the middle quali and wasn't afraid to slow down, I was feeling sick still and not very fast, I think this helped naturally slow me down and Stay in contact with the map for the whole race. I gave it my all on the last few controls, knew I'd had a decent race and didn't want to miss out on an A final by a few seconds.

Middle final was shit, I think I was too content with just making the A final and wasn't able to focus as much as the day before, I guess also cos of tiredness. Was really keen for a rest day.

Sprint was gonna be my last individual race at JWOC ever so had to push hard, and starting early I knew there was a chance to be in the lead by the finish. Started off decently in the park, a bit flustered but stayed calm the whole way. then was pretty decent thru into the building areas. Looking at the splits I was in like 80th in the park section and picked up positions thru all the more technical stuff in the buildings. Really glad the race was more technical than last year otherwise I would have finished a lot closer to last years result. Pretty happy with 33rd, my best position at JWOC.

Training helps. South Africa can really do well in the next few years, If us top guys keep improving and create a good competitive environment. If we all just try beat each other all the time and all keep improving, we can do amazing things I reckon. Things like the Portugal training were also a great help, especially for Tim and Roark, who have the pretty much the best SA results on début and at their age.

I'm gonna make sure that I never let them beat me though :P and hopefully I can be the target they need to keep competitive and train like elite international athletes.
