Wow.
Madrid Rock n Roll Marathon.
Marathon was always on the bucket list and thought now would be a cool time to get it out of the way. New city, cool memory.
Had entered this about six months ago. Going to the event centre last night was really cool. Loads of travelling marathoners were there straight from the airport.
Feel like its a nice way to get visas and travel on the green mamba.
Absolutely hit the wall at 32. knew it was coming from about 28km. Was on track and doing alright. Started with a Spanish orienteer. He dropped me at about 17 km, he was faster than me and pushed on for a 3:23.
I had a friend who jumped into the race at 22km to run with me for pretty much the rest of the way. knew it wasn't going too well when I was really excited to have him join, knew I'd drop off without him. Cruising ok enough but I was counting down the km's to get to the 28km mark and be 2/3 of the way through. Ran past some friends here, put it was a lot of uphill and a major struggle, but I still had 3:30 in mind.
Then had my first walk at 32km I think. I knew I had no chance of getting 3:30 and started to really enjoy the atmsphere a lot more. No pressure on running to a time, enjoying the music and the crowds. The race was never my goal race and going for a time was nice, but once that was out of the window I wasn't disappointed and started to lap up the experience.
Later would try and run like 500 metres and then walk for a bit. would start walking everytime I felt my left hammy bite just before it was about to go into full cramp.
Then with a km and a half to go, both hamstrings went into full cramp at the same time and I was keeled over the side, epic feeling, hilarious, first time I've ever cramped during a run I think, usually cramp a couple hours after in front f the TV. smashed out a 12:37 km here.
walked the rest of the way into the finish brisk enough to get under 4 hours.
Glad its done. Just need to train more next time :"D

Open Negro at Spanish Champs
Thought I’d entered ages ago for Spanish champs but clearly I hadn’t and so had to run the open category.
1700 people at these champs. In a town called llanes in the north of Spain.
Crazy.
What a cool day. Left the school hall floor I’m staying in with about a hundred other people on a bus with Galicia O club. Got to llanes at about 10:30.
Races were only starting at 16:00. Quarantine for everyone at 15:00. So I walked around the town for a bit. Then chilled at the beach for 2 hours. Had a dip in some chilly water.
The race was sick. Lovely temperature for me. Easy enough course but such a cool area with tourists walking in the streets.
Just had a hesitation or two. Didn’t have SI air. Should buy one but they’re pretty expensive.
Felt pretty fast as well which was nice. Haven’t felt that in a long time.
Walked around the town did some 400m intervals. And had another dip in the water while the elites were running across the beach. Gorgeous.
Then hung around for prize giving. Where they have a proper podium. Got the win in my course so got to stand on a podium or the first time for orienteering.
Wild. Honestly one of the coolest orienteering events I’ve ever been to. Weather great. Location stunning.
