Wiela-Bunyip Reach. Aus Relays, ACT M55, 3rd. GPS missed the first 100m.
Took it easy and made one mistake, stopped short at 13 (30 seconds), because the slope direction didn't feel right. Average heart rate 10 less bpm than yesterday - running much slower paid off. Our team beat all but one of the M45s as well, woohoo.

Crooked Straight, Middle, M60, 9th +4:08 behind the winner, Jeff D. What a shambles. Lost 9 minutes according to Winsplits. The important one was 3:30 at no. 1 as that rattled me for the entire race. Didn't go into the bush area carefully enough and found two other controls before mine. Couldn't relocate off either of them, despite the fact that one of them was on the end of a prominent hill, just like what I was looking for. Turns out it wasn't mapped as a hill.
Stumbled my way to 2 and 3 and then lost another minute at 4, bad direction and then turned the wrong way.
Got going after that and was the fastest from here till I was approaching 10. That included catching and passing James who had started 2 minutes behind me but missed 7. So at this stage I was less than 2 minutes off the leader and on course for the win.
However, failed on no. 10. Got to the flag that was on the edge of the circle and on the other side of the bush from mine, and then went AWOL for a minute.
11 was OK but then another mega-fail (4 minutes) on 12 on the vague plateau. This time checked 3 other controls, again couldn't relocate off any of them. Came to a complete stop and just waited for James to come up from making a mistake and check the wrong control I had just been to. Then decided to walk over and check behind a few bushes I hadn't before - hey presto there it was.
Demoralised after that and took until 16 to start running properly again. Then messed up the last control, ran down the wrong road and then checked yet another wrong control on a fence corner.

Gold Creek return. Easy roads (GDE/Barton Hiway) but still good to get over 30kmh for a solo training ride.

So, avoided the last magpie attack location on Barton Highway but ran into a flock waiting outside Gold Creek Maccas. One chased me for 200m and gave up at the Curran St roundabout.
