Baal Bone Gap. Okm 5.4km. One mistake exactly 3 minutes. No. 4, up a very steep slope and along. Did that but had climbed up the impassable cliff rather than going through the gap as I thought, so ended up closer to the control than I thought. So ran along to the boulder field that I could see, except that it wasn't the one on the map. As I was doing this I passed within 10m of No. 4 which was on the other side of a small boulder, marked as a boulder field. Ran around the one I had identified, no flag, so up to the top of the cliff line and back checking all the gaps till I got back to above where I had started from. Other than that ran well.

No. 1 was an interesting route choice - up and over or contour on a steep slope. Depending on animal tracks and fallen timber, contouring could have been much faster, or much slower. I went up and over and got it cleanly. Would be good to know the way others went.

Mount Piper. Okm 4.5km. Straight line climb was 200m, and I probably climbed that. Anyway, butchered no. 1 as usual and lost 1:30. Then couldn't get the angles right and lost time on 3 (1:20) and 11 (1:40) among others. No. 11 was a bit dodgy - similar codes 135, 136; 50m apart on the same creek?
Ok, so splits are up - 7 people punched 135 when they were looking for 136 further down the same creek. Map says it was 70m distant (and that there was a "gap" in the watercourse, so within the rules). Only one didn't subsequently find 136.

spiked:24/28c shoes: Saucony Hurricane Progrid 12

Legs tired and bothersome, so junked the planned intervals and went orienteering instead. Ran controls 102 to 130 of the 2010 Super Long World Champs. Missed 105 and 106 though. Longest run since January.

Had to laugh at this nomination for Injury of the Century
