Note

Review of 2009:
B+ maybe? The highlight was Cath winning the World Masters Long Distance - after many couldabeens she pulled off the big one.
For myself 6th in the World Master's sprint was OK, a reasonable result given the not-as-much-as-usual-injury-riddled preparation. Obviously it could have been better: 36 seconds would have been good for Bronze.
In age class competition I won the Oceania Sprint and Middle, the Australian Sprint and the WA Long. The Australian Long was yet another one of my couldabeens as I was still leading with less than 1km to go.
I kept up M21 elite comps with the Easter Sprint (43rd) and Middle (37th) as well as the WA sprint (7th) and Middle (3rd). That got me into the top 100 Australian elites at 85th, 3 places ahead of Tooms. The Easter WRE got me into equal 1461st place in the World Rankings, so not many waves there except that I couldn't help noticing Tooms at 1671st.
Didn't do as much MTBO as I would have like, but did get 3rd in the WA Middle.
Training wise it was not a bad year, but failed to top 5,000km on the bike (4,905) - did over 9,000 in 2006. Did more running than previous years at 573km, most of that from the 58 Orienteering events.

Running 45:00 [3] 7.75 km (5:48 / km) +200m 5:09 / km

Mt Clarence. Opposite of the last run, really struggled early and was on the point of turning back but perservered. Came down the downhill MTB track - looks like fun.

Cycling 1:50:00 intensity: (55:00 @3) + (55:00 @4) 54.25 km (2:02 / km)

Frenchman Bay Road with Cole and Richard. Pretty rough surface, nice scenery. Made good time on the way back.

Subiaco. To Theatre Gardens then pushed pram home via Heytesbury, which looks pretty good now that all the building has finished - only took 6 years.

Teering race (Noel event) 40:00 [4] 7.0 km (5:43 / km)
weight:76.2kg shoes: ASICS DS Racer

Minim Cove. Another classic, map broken up as presents under a tree. Got going straight away, then Cath caught up and I followed her, pushing the pram, most of the way. Got horribly confused near 8 and wasted a lot of time. Surprised that Joe Dowson won, but I'm guessing that's the last time I'm going to be surprised by how good the kid is.

In case Noel's map isn't anywhere else I've put it on Flickr - worth a view:

So I'm parked outside the office and decide I'll try and fit the childseat before I head out to the airport since I've got lots of time. Can't get it sorted and the time clicks over to 3.30pm - time to go since that's when that parking zone becomes a clearway. Close the door and go round to the drivers side. WTF, the car has locked itself?? and the key is sitting on the seat where I left it to fix the seat? Run back inside to see if I've left the spare in the office, but no its in my day bag in the car. Run across the road to get a brick and smash the window. Leave the car at Sydney Airport where it will be for the next two weeks.

So, that is a feature of a car that if any have I will never buy in the future. This was a VW Golf (2002, a black one) with central locking. Mind you it hasn't happened since we got it in 2006 - it chose its moment well.

Commute

Wednesday Dec 16, 2009 #

Teering race (Sydney SS) 39:00 [4] 7.0 km (5:34 / km)
shoes: ASICS DS Trainer

East Killara. 44th, 8th MV. Stuffed up shockingly. Got back 6 minutes early and near the end decided to miss out a loop of about 1km which would have scored an extra 80 points. So ended up on 380, should have been 460. Running OK though considering another Yuletide lunch (fish and chips on Balmoral Beach).

Tuesday Dec 15, 2009 #

Cycling 44:00 [3] 20.0 km (2:12 / km)

Lane Cove Rd. Yuk. Too busy at 6.30am.

Sunday Dec 13, 2009 #

Cycling 2:50:00 [3] 74.0 km (2:18 / km)

Macquarie Uni-Land Cove Rd-Mona Vale Rd-West Head and return. Bike race in progress on West Head road, don't know how the bunch stayed together on those hills. Saw my first NSW speed trap on Mona Vale Road.

Saturday Dec 12, 2009 #

Cycling (Bikebug) 2:22:22 [3] 70.0 km (2:02 / km)

Could see the backmarkers of the main group at the top of McCarrs Ck road, so went a little bit better than last time. Still struggled though. Quite a fast pace down Pacific Hiway, except of course for all the red lights.

Thursday Dec 10, 2009 #

Cycling (Commute) 22:00 [2] 10.0 km (2:12 / km)

To get new tyres after the puncture - in changing the tube noticed I could see the wire coming through the rubber. The tube blew out of the new front tyre (Schwalbe "Durano") on the way back; had to let the air out and put the tyre back on.

Teering race (Sydney SS) 44:00 [4] * 8.0 km (5:30 / km)
spiked:19/22c shoes: ASICS DS Trainer

North Steyne, Manly. 3rd VM, 27th overall. Struggled with this one after the Yuletide lunch. Running OK, but R achilles/lower calf not happy after. Trouble with 7 ("pot" gone) and 10 (stuck in a bush). Ran past 14 a few metres. Had to wade Manly Creek to get to 17 and then run across soft sand - not ideal, at least I wasn't in the Brooks Trance (the City Beach nightmare). However the water was quite refreshing. Started to motor on the way back and went for 16 as an out and back to try and score another 20 points. Got halfway but the track wasn't clear and I abandoned. Got to the finish with 1 minute to spare after jogging in, so it would have been touch and go.

Tuesday Dec 8, 2009 #

Cycling 22:00 [3] 10.0 km (2:12 / km)

Lane Cove cycleway. Puncture after 5k, which I had to repair because my spare tube had a manafacturers defect. Piece of glass in the tyre, unfortunately I dropped it, so I ain't going back that way any time soon.
Note: new contact lenses

Monday Dec 7, 2009 #

Cycling 50:00 [3] 17.5 km (2:51 / km)

Commute plus explored up to Chatswood on the alleged bikepath

Saturday Dec 5, 2009 #

Teering race (Metro Series) 45:53 [4] * 9.1 km (5:03 / km) +10m 5:01 / km
spiked:23/24c weight:75.5kg shoes: ASICS DS Trainer

Kewdale. 4th on Long (1 Hoggster, 2 Sten, 3 Ben Corry). Felt good early and punched first at 5. Led Hoggster and Ben Corry through 4, 2, 1, 29 and 27. Headed off to 26, but there was a hill in the way that tRicky had hid. With the slowing of pace the heat started to have an effect and I started to struggle. Hoggster got in front to 26 and I kept in touch through 25, 24, 20, 19 and 18. Halfway, but the wheels were falling off. Had passed Ken and Erin but at this stage my biggest concern was whether they were going to get back past me. Coming up to 16 I knew it was a critical decision - this was the first one which was an optional "leave". I miscounted and went for it (Hoggster didn't, but he was 200-300m ahead and I didn't see him turn left). Had another chance to retrieve my miscount by leaving out 11, but didn't rejig till too late. As a result went very close to 22 but didn't need it. The heat was intense - 33 degrees when we started and was hobbling/stumbling through the last half. Good course by tRicky - needed to think but couldn't muster it up.

Running 58:30 [3] 10.0 km (5:51 / km) +230m 5:15 / km

Stringybark Creek and back through Lane Cove to Artarmon. Was on bush tracks for about 6km and didn't see a single person. No wildlife either mind you.
