Teering race (Autumn Classic) 1:10:07 [5] **** 10.29 km (6:49 / km)
spiked:10/15c shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw 270

Day 2 at Kenine Hill. Physically drained after yesterday and had Cath not blown out between no. 7 and 10 she would have collared me. As it was she was in the lead till 6 and catching me from 11 as I tired, particularly from 14 (see graph).

1 Missed - no attackpoint, no aiming off so turned downhill when I got to the rocks not up
2 just slow uphill
3 great downhill open leg, felt like maybe I was going to get the legs moving
4 missed a little (10 seconds?) to the left
5 slow slog up hill
6 really put in here, but Cath still ahead
7 read the rocks OK
8 same leg as yesterday
9 tricky, stumbled on it
10 straight
11 found a roo path
12 nice, open, quick leg
13 luckily relocated on a single boulder above the control
14 slog, birds sounding like SI beeps
15 ran into the area too far to the right
16 missed the best route choice - should have gone down like Cath

Teering race (Autumn Classic) 36:38 [5] *** 5.9 km (6:13 / km) +130m 5:36 / km
spiked:7/9c shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw 270

Day 1, straight line length. Turbo kicked in on full power at no. 1 and scorched around. Nearly ruined it at 6 when I went down the slope too far right and too low. Didn't really know which way to turn, but chose correctly. Probably lost around 1.5 to 2 minutes? A bit low on 8 but only lost around 20 seconds there. All in all a good run, typical of Day 1s for me - yet again won by a bigger margin on the short Day 1 course than on the longer Day 2. In fact a few I remember I got beaten on the Day 2 event but held on for the win (WA Champs 2006 by Paul Pacque, 2007 by Noel Shoknecht and 2008 by Gary Carroll).

Cycling (Floreat) 30 [4] 0.25 km (2:00 / km)

Late, so shortcut thru Perry Lakes, and had to pull back 200m on Oceanic. Still a bit of gunk from the cold, but felt good on the hills, 3rd to CGS and 3rd in sprint.

MTB Orienteering race (Turner Hill) 1:32:08 [4] 26.2 km (3:31 / km)
spiked:3/7c

Course 2. Given a dud hint before the start, so chose the good track around rather than the new, soft, uphill, shorter track - 6.73km to no. 1 (23.20). Saw Andre Morkel coming out of it and it was deja vue all over again: like at Aquinas I had difficulty passing him, got past 3 times but blew it each time. Firstly overshot 2, didn't see it; then chose to go left to no. 4, but that put me on the wrong single track, so had to climb to the top and back down again; then missed the way in to 7 and rode up the power line track at the back. the corrugations loosened the seatpost and by the end it was just about like riding a BMX in the circus. Still, a win is a win.

Teering race (Scotch) 18:26 [4] *** 4.0 km (4:37 / km)
spiked:26/26c shoes: ASICS DS Trainer

Slow after another cold enforced taper, but at least I could read the map as a result. 7th, a bit further down than I'm comfortable with. Sten nearly handed 6th to me but held on by 8 seconds. Very good win by Oscar.

Note
slept:8.0 (sick)

Really wanted to do Floreat before the May rains set in, but woke up with a stuffed nose, so it looks like that cold has arrived (or returned) - and I can't blame Aoife for it!

Note

Rescued my GPS track - Sportstracks "lost" it. Was able to convert the Garmin Training Centre file .tcx into a .gpx using http://www.gpsies.com/
The GPS tracks on RouteGadget (http://oawa.dowling.org.au/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi) are pretty funny - not just mine!

Teering race (Badge) 1:08:45 [4] *** 9.3 km (7:24 / km) +280m 6:26 / km
spiked:13/15c shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw 270

Spice Brook. Okm 7.2. Lovely area, not thick nice spur gully, good course setting. Was going OK till I met tRicky on a track. Went off the track in the wrong direction - had overcorrected left and thought I had still to turn left to 9. Lost 1.5 minutes, but worse was to come. Good long leg setting to 12 and I thought I was going OK, but I had drifted a little bit right and went through the creek right of where I thought. Result - the creeks sort of matched, but no flag. Ran out of options so ran 500m north to the road and back again. Lost 10 minutes on what I should have done. Twisted R ankle on the way to 13, so slower from there. Just got in ahead of Kim, Tony Whittaker had a similar blowout to mine on 13, except he had to run a full km return to relocate on the road.

Rowan's Group caught me up on Railway, so with them to Raffles. Surprised me by taking the big hill at Pt Walter. A lot quieter group (and faster) than last week. Then they went up Canning so I soloed to Shelley. Caught by the Glen Parker group so the speed was between 40-50 back to Canning Hiway which is where they relax (they stop at the Belltower).

The Garmin stopped for the last 3km (at Mts Bay Rd). Anyway, pretty good pace, as usual got over Roses Hill OK but not Devils Elbow. Won my first UWA sprint for a long time - sitting 6th behind Rowan, Oscar, John, Andrew the banker, plus 1. Andrew went - too far out for Oscar so he didn't get on, I did and came around with about 300 to go.

Teering race (Gooseberry Hill) 1:01:41 [4] *** 5.8 km (10:38 / km) +290m 8:30 / km
spiked:10/12c shoes: Helly Hansen Trail Cutter

Straight line 4.5km. Much pricklier than JFNP, but I had long pants, gaiters, sock protectors and knee bandages so only a few thorns in the thighs. Lost a couple of minutes on 8 and on 9, which Joe and Oscar got much faster. Got them back and was in the lead by 12 but lost out on the track run to the finish. Running OK, but not quick.

Cycling (Shelley) 2:01:00 [3] 65.0 km (1:52 / km)

First time with CRT from Brew Ha. Didn't conform enough and the group was too slow - fI was getting bored so first I got on Riders Choice when they went by. The 36kmh up Majestic hill put me in to the red zone and I couldn't stay on up the small hill to Heathcote. So, went back to CRT (had to wait 3 minutes). On Shelley the guy in front of me kept slowing down when he rolled through - after a few times of no pedalling and shouting "Slowing!", the next time I inched my front wheel up alongside his rear, so I didn't have to slam on the brakes. Well, that didn't go down well. Shouts of "Stay on the wheel", and, from the bossy boots - "Keep your line or go home". So attacked the group at the next opportunity and lasted 2km before 9 against 1 started to tell. Turned off to do some extra. Its back to Riders Choice for me next time!
