Sunday Apr 26, 1987 #

Teering race (Irish Champs) 50:58 [4] 9.6 km (5:19 / km)
shoes: Swede

Relay, Glengarriff. Tony Keys led in 53:55 after the first leg, with Ajax (P Gargan) in 5th, 11 minutes down on 64:52 and the Curragh 9th (Pat Farrelly 67:51). Wally turned that around to bring Curragh home in the lead on leg 2 with a 54:17, while Peter Kernan did enough to get Ajax close in second (59:55). My fastest split (50:58) wasn't quite enough over Gus (53:30). Basically I threw this away shortly before the end with a mindless brain fade costing a couple of minutes on no.12. Boy was I surprised to see Gus popping up behind me on no. 13.

Arrived at 13, the second last, which was on top of a small ridge in full view of the finish on the next ridge over. Next thing Gus arrived too, so handed him the punch. Down to the last control which was straight downhill, then left for about 50m, turn around and sprint up the ridge. Whaaaa? Gus had punched a different last control just at the bottom of the downhill and was already starting up to the finish. Sprinted as hard as I could with the crowd cheering us on, but could only close the gap to 7 seconds. A harrowing experience.

Grenchenberg, Solothuener OL. Tough course. Lost little bits of time here and there; one minute bush bashing instead of tracks to 2 was the worst. Winner was Bollinger (72:32), Dieter Wolf was 10th (78:50). Running Ok late in the course - 18 to 19 was 1.2km downhill in 5:30.
