Stromlo Criterium. C grade, 20 laps, lasted a bit longer this time, dropped with 4 laps to go. Quite windy and I think that helped me survive the first half at about 40kmh. Then they eased off and I thought maybe I could get to the end with the bunch. No, another 40kmh lap and then I got cut off on a corner by a tiring guy. Got back on but only lasted half a lap.

Radford College, M1. Okm 3.8 (!), GPS climb 46m. Quite slow and made a couple of small mistakes. Whats surprising is how little difference any of that made - I was 22nd overall and 22nd to no.1. After the error at 4 I was in 26th place and basically stayed there all the way just passing a couple of people who self-destructed.
Mistakes: #4 - (-30 seconds) orienteered to the centre of the circle and no flag. There were steps there so ran to the bottom and looked up, but didn't see the flag. Back to where I was and a bit further, nothing, back to the base of the steps and up a couple, yep there it was at the top.
#15 - (-30 seconds) orienteered to the centre of the circle and no flag. There were steps there - had a look over the side but nothing. Then had a look at the description - a pictorial "under" that I have never seen before. Had I realised it was on the lower level, a route choice across the covered area car park would have been far better.
#26 - (-30 seconds). A good leg and I missed both the faster route choices (straightish with no climb, and right).

Olympic Bicentennial Park MapRun Long A. Got a bit confused when I punched the first control and the phone said “No. 9 punched”. The next one was coded 2 so went there anyway and was all right after that. As is usual these days took a while to get going. The mossies were out in force today.

Note: at Sydney Track Classic later. Good show from Bol and Deng in the 800 and Michelle Finn (IRL) in the 3000m SC. Finn put a couple of mètres on second place at every jump, which Campbell would then close up straight away - until the last lap. Lots of fouls from the triple jumpers. Also a good 1500m from Linden Hall who slipped back to third with 150 to go, then came good in the last 50. There was an Erbacher in the 3000mSC - found something more rewarding than O?

Stromlo East (XC area). Okm 3.0, GPS climb 46m. Poor run, particularly up hill. One genuine mistake (40s) - saw a nice open spur from 2 with someone heading down it - ran to it, but it was the wrong one, on the wrong side of the creek. Also shouldn't have gone straight to the finish (-5s).

West Deakin Offices. Ran pretty well, but still finished 18th, 5:38 down on Fredryk. I was catching Marina from 12, and was just behind at 16 but chose the other way around to 17, lost 10 seconds. Got back to a few paces behind at 20, but again chose a different route to 21 and lost 20 seconds (the stairs were steep up, so I didn't end up avoiding the hill). This was almost exactly the same place I lost most of my time last year at the Sprint Champs. Didn't see Marina again, and made another bad route choice to the finish, up the questionable scarp, losing another 10 seconds. So 30 seconds lost from 20 to the finish - confirmed by the fact that I punched 20 two seconds ahead of Elye (after catching 4 minutes) and he got to the finish 30 seconds ahead.
Hip surprisingly good before and after.

Red Hill. Moderate1. Ok till 11 when I overshot amongst heaps of unmapped features - boulders, creeks, termite mounds. I was way too high and lost about 4 minutes. Then the hip gave out and was really sore from there. Too high for 12 and 13 as well but only dropped around 20-30 seconds each.

This was my 3rd worst run in the last 12 months. Since the Australian Long Champs I haven't come within an ass's roar of a Pink Ranking scoring run. And my other 5 scoring runs were in April-May last year, so I could be heading for a drop of 78 places to 208 by the end of May (below Cath).

Haig Park. Okm 2.0. Fun maze O plus botanical adventure O. Lost the plot on the second loop - started heading the wrong way twice (from 13 and from 15), so overtaken by Hoggster and Ecmo. Got Andy back when he didn't flip the map for the second maze, but then headed towards 27 on the straight line marked on the map - which went across the OOB road. Luckily Andy called me back before I got there.
Time loss - to 3 (5s, started heading for 8): to 10 (5s, missed the best route): to 14 (5s, started heading for 17): 16 (20s, started heading for 17): 17 (5s, went around for the bridge): 17 (10s, overshot it): 22 (10s, the code numbers in the maze were confusing - I went for 222, which was 25): 27 (10s - Headed on the straight line). Total 1:10.

Black Mt North. Okm 5.4 / 220m. A few overshoots (2 and 4 both 30 seconds, 10 1 minute). Good direction keeping, the new visibility helped. Walked every step of the hill to 16. Funnily enough that leg was 16% (30m climb in 180m). Not so funny was how badly I was running - way behind on anything involving the slightest climb. On 16 I was 129% slower than Marty - 2:54 vs 1:16.
EDIT The long leg to 4 was over or around, I went over in 11:28 including 30 seconds overshoot. Since then I decided to try the "around" route to the right - 8:33, so I lost about 2:30 on that leg.

Orana School. A few hesitations, but OK. Lovely and hot = clean air!!
Time losses:
15 seconds at 3 - didn't see the flag on the correct (small) tree, so checked the one beside it.
10 seconds to 5: Didn't see the best route which was to turn back from 4
5 seconds on the way to 10: missed closing the gate properly, went back.
10 seconds on the way to 13: held up by Craney and the map isn't right - if it was I would not have lost time.
5 seconds at 21: lost my place in the buildings and just stumbled upon it.
Total 40 seconds - no places, still 11th overall.
