S6D: Day 4 - Darnaway West:
Really enjoyed this course and the terrain. Wish I had the opportunity to run in terrain like this more often. Bummed that my ankle stopped me really running hard. 2 mistakes, one on control 4 where I did a parallel error and mistake the vegetation boundary for the thick area. Lost close to 2.5 mins there. Second mistake was number 7 where I got caught up on another trail not marked which may just have been caused by so many orienteers. When switched to reading contours I worked out the issue, cost about 1 - 1.5 mins. Hesitated going into 10 and 11. Again this course and terrain are what the magic of orienteering is about.

S6D day 3 - Darnaway East - Middle Distance
Now this is what orienteering is all about and why I love the sport so much. Still bummed about my foot hurting, but still had an enjoyable time. Love navigating through the detailed contours and the runnablity vegetation. Only real mistake was control 9 where I somehow geared to the left too much.

Note

After our race watched the WOC Relay races. The women's race was dominated by the Danes from the beginning and they won by about 4 mins. USA team was Sam, Alison and Ali and they did okay.
The men's race was dominated by the Swiss, but a great race for the remaining medals. Alas the Brits just missed out coming 4th as the 3rd leg Norwegian went from 4th to 2nd.

Note

Watched the WOC middle distance race. Alison, Ksenya and Sandra were running for USA. Alison had a decent run and was the fastest USA runner, but still a good distance behind the leaders. Still a proud parent!

S6D Day 2 - Strathfarrar
Looking forward to this course as friend Martin Wilson planned the course. A decent uphill trek to start. As in later start block, the braken in places had been well beaten down and with recent wet weather the elephant trails very boggy and wet. 2-3 I took the road option, though Martin later said the direct route was quicker. Lost time as cut in too early and initially went to a parallel hill. Control 5 I had issues in the circle as the crag is shown higher up than actual one with control and there was a crag I the location shown on map. Frustrated, but onward. Clean through 9. At 10 was initially higher up the hill, but pretty quickly realized and dropped down into control. Control 11 there were a lot more boulders within circle so lost about a minute here. Dumb mistake to 12 as right on track until last 100m and got pulled to right and too far down hill. Just a slow boggy run to 13. Enjoyed the course.

S6D Day 1: Achagour
Enjoyed the first 7 controls with a focus on contour reading. Frustrated that my foot (planar fasciitis) was limiting my running ability. Struggled with the first control getting into the map. Struggled a bit around the circle at number 8. 9, 10 and 11 were pretty straight forward. My big mistake was number 12 within the plantation area. Blew my distance estimation on the ride as didn't go nearly as far as thought. Contours in the plantation area hard to read so no real relocation point. Lost a good 8 minutes. Bummer, but such is life and the important thing this week is to have fun and support Alison and the U.S. Team at the World Orienteering Champs.
