DVOA EVENT: Hickory Run -GOULD RUN Green Course 5.5k 125m climb
First time orienteering in a while and first time running on this map. Nice area and interesting course by Sandy F. Legs 1,2,3 were pretty straight forward, a bit slow to 1 getting into the map. 3-4 a good leg, my issue was just not going far enough and then a bit too far to right and ended up in re entrant to the north. Quickly relocated. Was running fairly well and perhaps got ahead of my brain the next leg to 5. No problem to marsh which was more noticeable by the vegetation than water, but obvious enough. I should have kept to east side as ended up drifting too far to north. Thought I had read contours well enough and there are more knolls/pits etc than on map, but must have been within 50m at some point, but tried different relocating spots, but finally ended up going back to marsh and worked right into it. 5-6 was probably the toughest leg on the course and I opted for fine compass, well first orienteering one-o-one- aim off! Didn't do that -error number one, no real attackpoint determined, error number 2! Started out on track picking off a clearing and should have aimed for re entrant as attackpoint, but didn't and paid dearly for it. Thrashed back and forth, up and down, then used springs NW of control as a relocation point. Bearing and walked, but again no control, so finally dropped down to stream and marsh and then bearing up hill and finally found control! An 18minute split for a 450m max leg! Ok so time to properly concentrate and plan good but on the safe side route choices for the remainder of course. Clean legs the remainder of course, 9-10 legs just tired.
An excellent course by Sandy in a really nice area. I need to get my head in the game before NAOC. Definitely rusty.
The real bummer of the day was losing my Silva compass magnifier.
