Bicycling (Stationery) 31:00 [4]
ahr:137 max:157

Was going to go for a run, but it was so miserable out with the first heavy rain of the season, that I just got on the exercycle for 30 minutes and read.

Orienteering race 1:44:15 [4] *** 4.1 km (25:26 / km) +335m 18:03 / km
ahr:120 max:142 spiked:10/14c

Calero. Not a good run. 10 min error on 1, too high on 2, slow and ended up too low on 3, climbed back up, couldn't find control when another person came behind me and left. I looked behind me and about 5 meters away was the control.

My legs were really tired from yesterday, both the field checking and the dancing, plus the 4 hours driving yesterday and the 1:30 drive to the event today. Was mentally fatigued. Did reasonably OK after 3 except going on the wrong spur for 8, but had no zip in the legs.

Actual distance ran 6.4 k, 253 m climb according to Sporttracks.

Orienteering Field Checki 4:30:00 [2] 9.7 km (27:50 / km) +430m 22:47 / km

Field checking the Boggs courses. Did white, yellow, orange and the final brown control. All of the control sites have been flagged. Still have to fine tune them and do some test runs.

Running 44:13 [3] 5.78 km (7:39 / km) +150m 6:46 / km
ahr:138 max:156

CCCRMC to ridge then south to John Muir house and back. Slower than Tuesday despite less climb. Legs a little tired.

Walking 30:00 [2] 3.0 km (10:00 / km)

From CCCRMC to downtown and back.

Running 39:13 [3] 4.59 km (8:33 / km) +177m 7:10 / km
ahr:136 max:154

Ran in the hills behind CCCMRC. Headed south towards the freeway. Didn't go all the way down to the John Muir house. Will have to check that out later. Slow, but lots of hills.

Dancing 1:00:00 [2]

Boogie by the Bay weekend. Did some social dancing during the weekend. Probably more than an hour, but I didn't keep track. Fun event with a lot of good workshops and competition.

Saturday Oct 11, 2008 #

Running 32:48 [3] 5.0 km (6:34 / km)
ahr:143 max:163

Out and back along SF Bay trail from Hyatt SFO. Was at dance convention, but felt I needed a break. Very flat, had a headwind coming back.

Running 34:33 [3] 5.0 km (6:55 / km) +100m 6:17 / km
ahr:137 max:156

Slow jog around loop at top of hill down to Camino Pablo and back. Long time since I've done that. Right knee hurt a little bit the first half, but then felt better until the final steep hill back home. This run used to take me 25 minutes.

I went to a urologist today. I'm going to change meds, off Hytrin, which is an alpha blocker, but was originally used as an antihypertensive drug, and so has more cardiovascular effects, and go on Flomax, which is more urospecific, and also Proscar, which shrinks the prostate, and also is supposed to decrease the incidence of prostate cancer by 30%. Maybe the Hytrin has been the cause of not being able to keep up with Rich Parker and some of the other speedier old farts.

Orienteering race 1:41:42 [5] *** 4.3 km (23:39 / km) +200m 19:11 / km
ahr:134 max:157 spiked:9/11c

Almaden Green course. Derek Maclean course setter. Two bad legs, 6 and 7. Six had to be one of the most physical legs I have ever done. The red course, which put in 2 controls between 6 and 7. probably had the optimal route choice for this leg, but it was way out of the way. I struggled up a steep hillside, and for some reason decided to go NW around a big patch of fight, but it became virtually impassable, and had to turn back. Bob who had started 8 minutes behind me caught up to me then. Also had problems from 7 to 8 with another 9 minute error.

Actual distance ran, 6.27 km and 218 m climb, although it felt like a 1000 m.

Orienteering Field Checki 4:08:00 [2] 11.0 km (22:33 / km) +465m 18:37 / km

Field checked MT. Flagged the two furthest blue controls and another control on the east. Explored a big green area. Poorly mapped. Would not be too bad a terrain if mapped properly. Then did the rest of the advanced controls, except for the final 4 or so. One more long day, and all of the controls should be flagged.

Note

Sort of bummed that I have not done any exercise all week. I was working 5 straight days at Doctor's Medical Center, so didn't even get an afternoon off. I have 2 more straight 5 day weeks in mid October at the County Hospital. However, when working there, I can sometimes take a run during lunch hour, or at least walk the mile into downtown for lunch and another mile back. Starting in Dec. I am definitely going to try to have at least one full day off a week, plus the half day at Pittsburgh or Richmond (although Richmond usually turns out to be at least 6 hours, and sometimes up to 8 hours.)

Finally got around to going over my MT courses and looking at the good suggestions Martin gave me.

Still have not caught up with all of the e-mails George and Eric have been having regarding the long Team Trial course. I have to get up to Boggs early in Oct. Was going to go in Dec., but realized it could possible be snowing then. Want to get the courses pretty well finalized before I go to France for 5 weeks at the end of Jan. and all of Feb. Will do some fine touch up in March and April before the event.

Our new solar photovoltaic system is completed, and PG&E has installed the time of use meter. So far this week, we have only used 6 kv of electricity from PG&E, and have more peak period kv generated than we used, so probably did not have to pay anything for electricity this week. however, the days are getting shorter and the rainy season is about to start, so the solar electricity will decrease, but should really kick in again in spring and summer.
