Big Basin Orienteering Brown course. Actual distance 5.7. Really difficult course physically. I was really beat at the end. Navigationally so-so. Lots of errors, but many I can blame, rightly or wrongly, on the map. Missed 1. Ran on the trail to the reentrant bend, then up the spur. Thought I saw the depression then a knoll, but was actually too high. Spent a lot of time wandering around until I saw it down a couple of contours. Did OK on 2 but investigated a clump of downed trees a little before the control, because it looked like there might be a pit there. 3 went down the correct spur, but then saw the bag on the other side of several huge downed trees. Took several minutes to make my way through the crap. Over-ran 4 and got to the campground before I realized I had missed it. OK on 5 and 6. ON 7, I thought I would go cross country, as it looked like there was only a broad reentrant between the 2 controls. Instead, I faced a wall, which took a lot of time figuring out a way to scale it. Ended up right at the control once I passed that obstacle. Big problem on 8 I didn't see that it was on the other side of the creek with steep banks. Went into the campground with the loop road and found a small steep trail down to the creek that I could use some rocks and logs to cross. Big problem leaving 8, as I got caught up in unmapped fight. It was mapped as medium green. Finally made it to the road around to 9 and found it OK. No problem on 10. Got too high on 11. I thought I saw the collection of downed trees, but they were unmapped. Found a wrong control, probably at the small reentrant. Went down and finally found it. No problem on 12 and finish. It was nice to get out in the forest, but the course was about 2 times too long for Big Basin.
