Rogaining 5:50:00 [2] 35.9 km (9:45 / km) +1350m 8:12 / km

Spring 6hr rogaine at Mount Clear with Marty. This turned out to be A LOT of pain, but also a good experience. Cracking sunny day down in southern Namadgi. Given it was part of a 12hr rogaine, clearing the course wasn't possible, which made picking where to go trickier. We headed out east into the Mount Clear orienteering map terrain which was just gorgeous - lots of clear forest, big rocks, open areas. Skipping along nicely for the first 2hrs hitting the ~15km water drop bang on time. Legs felt ok but breathing and heart rate felt a bit high - altitude and heat/sun probably. Marty was generously saying his legs were tired but I think he was finding it pretty comfortable. Anyway, cracked on into NSW for the middle third of the course, which was much thicker than we expected. Also started making some nav mistakes at this point. Anyway, just a tick over 3hrs after both having stumbles I started to get cramps real bad on inner thigh and hamstrings. I'd been drinking and eating quite well, so don't really know what I could have done to avoid this. The next 2 hours were real horrible - lots of enforced stops leaning against trees swearing loudly, and a few annoying nav errors to make things worse (didn't even find one 40 pointer!). So after doing ~21km in 3hrs, it took 2hrs to do the next 9km to the 2nd water drop. Had a good sit down there and wondered why oh why oh why for a bit. Marty seemed to be enjoying himself though and was very patient with me, so that made me feel a bit better. Anyway, off we went knowing that walking wouldn't get us back to the hash house in time. Fortunately the ACT side was much more runnable than the NSW side and, as long as I didn't lift my feet more than about 10cm off the ground, I was finding I could stave off the cramps. Given all the walking before, I wasn't feeling tooo tired, so we were able to jog the final 50mins and pick up a few decent pointers on the way. Very relieved to finish and hit the soup and sausages, and we did manage to take out the win, so that was nice. Recovered pretty well afterwards it turned out. Still, not sure if/when I'll next be trying to race another 6hr rogaine after that experience!
