Orienteering 1:35:00 [4] 13.0 km (7:18 / km)

Another absolute shocker today to cap off one of my worst weekends of performances in a long time! At least I was able to enjoy today's course, despite my ineptitude - simply fantastic terrain, every control found being personal high 5 worthy. So, what happened? I think it all came down to being unable to make head nor tail of the map in a few key locations - most notably around #10, which was also halfway to #1. As a result I lost 8mins on the first control! (Key learning: stay in contact mid-leg) Then had a reasonable section before going into another warp around #6 and losing heaps more time. Another reasonable section until my hitting the Bermuda Triangle around #10. Did the long leg ok (not sure there was any choice but around the path?) and had a good section again til #15. Bumbled home, tail between legs, after that. Unsurprisingly I wasn't the only one to have trouble today. Simon, on the other hand, had an outstanding run - I was still losing time to him on the legs I did well, and he got round with no obvious mistakes. Very impressive. Have to have a mini moan about the course being too short and the map bags being crap. But the map itself and most of the course were first rate and I did honestly manage to enjoy myself and not get in too much of a boo. Honest.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.5 km (6:40 / km)

Warm-up only: in a boo day. Cheered up by meeting my new nephew in the evening!

Orienteering 51:00 [4] 4.5 km (11:20 / km)

Got in a large boo today after a shocking middle distance performance - 14mins behind a great comeback run from Shep. Hard to put a finger on where my grumpiness should be directed - definitely I was inept, but I can't help having a nagging doubt that the course, map, map scale, map bag and control placements (#9 in particular) were verging on being unfair. Either way, I didn't especially enjoy myself out there - a reasonable start ruined by big time losses at #9 and #10, compounded by getting in a big boo with the course at that point, with salt rubbed in the wound as course then went through a muddy, steep, bramble-fest section. Some people coped though and did seem to enjoy themselves, so it must just be me. Maybe there was a time too when I was better at this kind of thing.

A bit of a potter around some of my Christmas 5 day course in Beechworth Gorge. Good to get some map practice in - should stand me in good stead for the next couple of days...
