Orienteering race (World Cup Middle) 46:30 [5] 6.0 km (7:45 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

51st place, crap run. First 9 were relatively clean and I was quite in control - probably not planning ahead or looking at the whole leg enough though, that could've saved me a bit of time. #10 it all went wrong through and I dropped 2.5mins - one of those where I knew where I was but no control and I didn't have a contingency plan. It ended up being deep in a hole just round the brow of the hill. A bit unlucky perhaps. Caution then went out of the window and I was scrappy round the rest, including spending 2.5mins stuck in a bush on the way to #14. Very disappointing.

Model event on some dunes adjoining tomorrow's middle distance race. Took it slow and did fine - going to have to accept coming out a few metres to the side of controls here. It's gonna be fun tomorrow - very intricate open dunes, lots of open sand and some pretty nasty tussocky stuff.

Orienteering race 1:03:30 [4] 12.0 km (5:18 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Oceania Carnival Day 1 on Fusilier - a lovely forested dune area. Nice gentle terrain for just cruising round at a reasonable tempo without getting too tire.d Did that bit ok and hit 90% of the controls cleanly, but struggled to run in a straight line on the long legs and came out in the wrong place a few times (always far to the right). So not a great run technically, but physically fine. Not very relevant to Sunday though apparently...

shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Some control picking with the Aussies on Kaikokopu - a mainly forested sand dune area. Some bits were lovely, other bits were very horrible. Map a little iffy in a couple of places. Still, the bits that made sense and were nice to run through went well.

Orienteering 26:00 [3] 4.0 km (6:30 / km)

Short training on the slightly worryingly named 'Prickly Sands'. It was quite prickly too, but there were plenty of routes between the prickle bushes fortunately. Quite enjoyed this one and had a pretty clean run.

Note
(rest day)

Left Canberra at 6am, arrived Palmerston North 1am the next day - hardly a local World Cup race!

Running 40:00 [3] 9.0 km (4:27 / km)
shoes: Brooks Glycerin

Usual Davo loop as a loosener. Ripper sunny day - bit of a scorcher out there. Will be good to get to NZ tomorrow for some cooler weather.

Orienteering race (Xmas 5days - Beechworth) 1:11:00 [5] 10.0 km (7:06 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Tough hilly last day - longer than expected too. Managed to fluke my way past Simon into 3rd as he had trouble right at the end. Couldn't work out the first 2 controls so lost some time on both of these. Then got into a steady cruise pace and did ok for a bit until going over on my ankle at #11. Hobbled to #12 and managed to run it off, but took it pretty cautious after that. Some other little wobbles later on, but ended up having a decent run technically without over exerting myself physically.

Interesting week - great orienteering, weather and company (plenty of catching up with Rob and Clare). Speed seems to be good going into NZ, but struggling to replicate it in rocky/branchy terrain - fortunately that shouldn't hamper me too much there (something to work on afterwards - gonna do tempo/intervals in terrain more). Technically sound, but just making a couple of costly mistakes per course - that'll have to improve to do anything noteworthy in NZ.
