Note
(rest day)

Had a big brunch (albeit without beans) before heading down to Birmingham with Pete, Hannah, Neil and Zanthe to watch the UK Olympic Trials. Got really into it and enjoyed it. Then drove to London listening to the footy and checked in to my hotel just in time to watch extra time and penalties...

Orienteering race 33:40 [3] 7.0 km (4:49 / km)
shoes: Brooks Defyance

SYO bbq race from Tim Tett's and winding round Walkley. Lots of nostalgia. Legs felt awful though so couldn't get any kind of pace going. Fortunately did just enough to beat Sprotty by 6secs. Neil was 2mins ahead though, unsurprisingly. Anyway, then ate some sausages and burgers, before playing some snooker at the Hallamshire, then went to the Blake and ate some pizzas at Alex's house.

Running 1:15:00 [3] 13.0 km (5:46 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

From Strines, up to Cakes of Bread, down and up to Pike Low, then Lost Lad, Back Tor and back. Complete and utter ming! Although I did really enjoy it in that strange way that you can't really explain because there wasn't much to actually enjoy. Maybe it was just the thought of the giant yorkshire pudding with sausages and a couple of pints in the pub after. The run killed me though - felt pretty bad after the race yesterday, and really not at all used to lifting my legs through all the heather. Pete, Neil, Sprotty and Little Rob had to wait for me quite a few times! I've changed. Anyway, then went to the Common Room for some dazzling pool skills, then had a cuzza with loads of Sheffield people and then went to the Red Deer. Great stuff.

Running race (Blackamoor Fell Race) 41:46 [5] 6.0 mi (6:58 / mi)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Spent the day meandering from Stafford to Totley for the fell race, with stops off at Cheadle, Froggall for a nice rainy walk, and Bakewell for chips and a late lunchtime pint.

I took the first bit of the race pretty steady, my legs not really up for going hard from the off. But stayed in contention and found myself at the front just as we hit the top of the hill. Me and Tom Wilde pulled away on the roughish descent, then I got a small gap on the final uphill. The run to the finish was painful, with Tom almost catching me a number of times, but I just did enough to hold on for the win - won a hamper of fruit! Class. Although a bit healthy for my liking. Anyway, pleased with how I ran, and great to be back racing on't moors (it was proper Blacka weather as well - bleak and dizzly). Although on inspection I ran 1.30 quicker in 2006, which I think is an indication of how fit I was back then even if I did less roadrunning in those days.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Just a short warm-up really. Waited around for the prize-giving, then went to the Closed Shop and caught up with several people, just like the old days.

Note
(rest day)

Day 2 of exam - also long and exhausting, and probably not very successful either. Then drove to Stafford where Dad made me a homecooked burger and gave me some homebrew. Cheered me up no end!
