Rogaining 5:50:00 [2] 35.9 km (9:45 / km) +1350m 8:12 / km

Spring 6hr rogaine at Mount Clear with Marty. This turned out to be A LOT of pain, but also a good experience. Cracking sunny day down in southern Namadgi. Given it was part of a 12hr rogaine, clearing the course wasn't possible, which made picking where to go trickier. We headed out east into the Mount Clear orienteering map terrain which was just gorgeous - lots of clear forest, big rocks, open areas. Skipping along nicely for the first 2hrs hitting the ~15km water drop bang on time. Legs felt ok but breathing and heart rate felt a bit high - altitude and heat/sun probably. Marty was generously saying his legs were tired but I think he was finding it pretty comfortable. Anyway, cracked on into NSW for the middle third of the course, which was much thicker than we expected. Also started making some nav mistakes at this point. Anyway, just a tick over 3hrs after both having stumbles I started to get cramps real bad on inner thigh and hamstrings. I'd been drinking and eating quite well, so don't really know what I could have done to avoid this. The next 2 hours were real horrible - lots of enforced stops leaning against trees swearing loudly, and a few annoying nav errors to make things worse (didn't even find one 40 pointer!). So after doing ~21km in 3hrs, it took 2hrs to do the next 9km to the 2nd water drop. Had a good sit down there and wondered why oh why oh why for a bit. Marty seemed to be enjoying himself though and was very patient with me, so that made me feel a bit better. Anyway, off we went knowing that walking wouldn't get us back to the hash house in time. Fortunately the ACT side was much more runnable than the NSW side and, as long as I didn't lift my feet more than about 10cm off the ground, I was finding I could stave off the cramps. Given all the walking before, I wasn't feeling tooo tired, so we were able to jog the final 50mins and pick up a few decent pointers on the way. Very relieved to finish and hit the soup and sausages, and we did manage to take out the win, so that was nice. Recovered pretty well afterwards it turned out. Still, not sure if/when I'll next be trying to race another 6hr rogaine after that experience!

Orienteering race (SA Middle Champs) 40:18 [5] 7.3 km (5:31 / km) +280m 4:38 / km

Lots of reasons to be up for this one: last NOL race, and the cockies has to beat VIC to get the title. Also had a shot myself if I won. Cool area too - loads of rock but all open paddocks (like a good version of carsington pastures). Unfortunately was still feeling absolutely wrecked from yesterday. Set off ok after a reasonable warm-up jog, but started making small misses from #3 onwards - too much guesswork in the circle. Big miss of nearly 1min at #10 and the tiredness really set in at that point. Kept plugging away though knowing the importance. Last few controls had a lot of climb so really just tried to keep running rather than walk. Finished not expecting much tbh so was pleasantly surprised to hear it was enough for 2nd on the day - just. And best of all Marty and Barny ran well and we did enough to take the title by 1 point!

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 3.0 km (6:40 / km) +100m 5:43 / km

Very gentle and achey warm-up. No time for warm-down as we had to dash to the airport to fly home. End of a great time in SA.

Orienteering race (Aus Long Champs) 1:34:01 [4] 18.1 km (5:12 / km) +500m 4:34 / km

Managed to sneak a fluky 2nd after a tough day out - we were all outclassed by Henry. Pretty easy course but with a bit of variety. Didn’t really miss much - just a poor route to #5 maybe. Caught Barny up at #7 but was already feeling worn out at this point. We stuck together after that but it was mostly him leading running nice and strong while I suffered behind. A bit disappointing to find it so tough but I guess I haven’t done much long stuff and I probably overdid life a bit the last couple of weeks or so. Still, kept plodding away and didn’t miss much, so I’ll take that.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.5 km (6:40 / km) +50m 5:43 / km

Short warm-up today, too tired to warm-down!

Orienteering race (Aus Sprint Champs) 16:03 [5] 4.0 km (4:01 / km)

At Renmark Schools, came 5th. Flat out course, pretty straightforward really, but enough going on to keep it interesting. Set off hard and was in 2nd place after 5-5:30mins. In hindsight I probably set off a bit too hard as I then faded compared to the others. Happy with the result though and time behind (+35secs) as I just don't have the raw speed of those youngsters.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)

A pretty creaky warm-up after all the sand of the last couple of days. No time for a warm-down.
