Running 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

Still poorly with a cough and all that jazz but getting itchy feet so did a gentle cruise out to the wetlands and back. Felt pretty rubbish - a pointless run really.

Running race (YMCA Canberra Half Mara) 1:15:29 [5] 21.1 km (3:35 / km)
shoes: New Balance 769

Decided to run this fairly last minute so that I'd have a virtuous feeling ahead of a couple of days sitting in a conference eating lots of scones and cream. It was freezing (literally sub-zero) at the start, but warmed up to fairly cold as the morning went on. I was fine in my thermal though. Sunny and gorgeous as per usual but. Nice route of the west basin so able to put my head down and enjoy the loop and not worry about convolutions. Time was kind of what I expected, but I was pleased to feel good the whole way round and run an even race - although I was going as fast as I could too. It's told me that it's my speed, and not so much my endurance, that I'll need to work on for my other races coming up (which figures, given the training I've been doing). Was in 3rd for pretty much the whole race, with Anthony Rogers gradually pulling away and no-one in sight behind. Gracie's cheering was much appreciated.

Did a lovely bushwalk with Gracie up Tidbinbilla Mountain and Tidbinbilla Peak. Very sunny. A great footpad most of the way up to the ridge, then some spectacular views of pretty much the whole ACT - a fair bit of snow up on the higher peaks too.

Running 1:23:00 [3] 15.0 km (5:32 / km) +800m 4:22 / km

Managed to get an earlier than planned flight back from Sydney, so thought it'd be rude to pass up the chance to head out somewhere nice for a run in the weektime daylight. Decided a quick jaunt up Mt Tennent and back ticked all the boxes, and a cracker of a run it turned out to be. Solid effort on the way up, feeling quite good, and hit the top in 46. Cruised back down hoping to see a wombat as it was getting a bit dusky but no luck.

Orienteering 30:00 [4] 7.5 km (4:00 / km)

Night street-o in Hughes. It rained a bit before the start so a lot of people pansied out of it, but fortunately it stopped while we were running.

Sunday May 12, 2013 #

4 PM

Running 55:00 [3] 12.0 km (4:35 / km)

From home to Callum Brae and round the back of Mugga.

Running long 2:55:00 [2] 30.5 km (5:44 / km)

Great longun with Gracie and Al from Bulls Head taking in the Bendora Arboretum which was pretty cool - disappointed by the lack of humungous pine cones as Al promised although she made up for with tales of being bitten by a snake in the WOC trials but being too quick for its poison to sink in. Nice route on fairly flat fire trails with some good views. Quite warm too. Felt quite achy by the end but crisps and coke hit the spot as always.

Note
(rest day)

Back a bit late at work again, but it's given me a chance to formulate The Plan:
- City2Surf (11th August)
- Aus Champs O-Carnival (28th September - 6th October)
- Melbourne Marathon (tentative - 13th October)
- Bright 4 Peaks (2nd-5th November)
Training starts late June - just ticking over til then.

Running 53:00 [3] 12.0 km (4:25 / km)

Got let out of work early so skipped up Davo and Redders as the sun was setting. Cracker of an Autumn/Winter (but as hot as UK summer) day.

Note

An enforced rest day due to working back late, so at least no guilty feeling.

Not really sure what my aim/purpose/direction is now but I figured that whatever it was it would start with a rest day.

Orienteering race (WOC Long trial) 1:38:22 [5] 16.0 km (6:09 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

Fluked this one - took the win, but RobW would've won comfortably if he'd not mp-ed in the butterfly loops. Great terrain - so beautiful, a real pleasure to run through. The course was fun and challenging too. Got off to another ropy start with 1min binned on #1 and scrappy through #2-#5. Then had a good bit and caught Robbie at #10. He was going well though and I couldn't get past - we made a few small misses together but nothing too bad. I was just getting tireder and tireder as it went on, and really struggled to lift my legs enough to get over all the sticks and windblow, so I was lucky to have Robbie there running strongly to keep me going as best I could. Defo off colour a bit today.

So 3 fun races - quite a while til the next one for me (Oz champs in September) although feeling like a bit of a break. Look forward to finding out who's made the Aussie WOC team...

Orienteering race (WOC Sprint Trial) 16:46 [5] 3.5 km (4:47 / km)

Fortunate enough to just manage to fluke the win by 2secs from Lachy (on the last control). Didn't start well - dropped 20secs on #2 in the bush through not relocating off the big clearing quick enough. Fairly clean after that - maybe a couple of sub-optimal left or right choices but nothing to write home about. It defo helped having run here last year and knowing about some of the dodgy bits of map, although it was disappointing they weren't sorted out for this race. Really fun course though and very hard to stay on top of things all the way.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)

1 PM

Orienteering race (WOC Middle Trial) 38:55 [5] 6.5 km (5:59 / km)

What goes around comes around - not so lucky this afternoon coming in 2secs down this time to Robbie, again decided on the last control! A great, fun, rock hard course out at Orroral - almost every leg was super-tricky and in low-vis hunting out vegetation-coloured boulders. Biggest mistake was at #3 where I dropped 1min foolishly. After that I was broadly accurate, but always a bit scrappy in the circle on the technical rocky controls, mainly with Jock and Matt - kept mistakes down to 20secs max but they add up quickly. Anyway, reasonably happy at the finish as I knew a clean run would be nigh on impossible, but felt I should've been a bit more on the ball in places. Great orienteering though - what it's all about. Gracie's start was delayed and she had a bit of a disrupted start trying to help ensure that 2min gaps would be kept between runners - looks like they sorted it out fine, although I'd be interested to see when the last 3 on the mens started relative to each other.

10x90secs at Jerra - pushed quite hard, felt a bit rough but better as it went on. Bumped into Shep cycling home on my warm-down.
