Orienteering race (Perham Down Regional) 1:07:20 [5] 14.0 km (4:49 / km)

Regional Event near Andover on the edge of the Salisbury plains. It wasn't the best piece of terrain (lots of fields, a few thickets and some fairly grotty wood) but because it was a good map and a well planned course, it was actually a really good event (BOK take note). Only gripe was that they could easily have put the finish in the car park but chose to hide it in a bush 200m away instead. Anyway, I enjoyed it, didn't take it too seriously and tried to just cruise round. My time wasn't great - it was sub 5mpk terrain but I did 67 for 12.5km so was some way off. Made a couple of wobblers (a 2min error - d'oh!, and a 30seconder) plus felt generally crap and slow (last night's race and recovering from my cold probably).

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)

10min warm up. I wonder when the last time I actually did a warm down was.

4 PM

Running 55:00 [2] 10.0 km (5:30 / km)

Had a day out with Gracie taking in Wells and Stourhead. After walking round the gardens (nice Autumn colours) we went for a nice little run round the woods in the Estate and up to Alfred's Tower (had already been up this on the drive from Wells) and back. Very nice.
7 PM

Orienteering race (Blaise Night-O) 47:00 [4] 7.5 km (6:16 / km)

Got home from Stourhead at 6.50pm so quickly got changed and ran down to the Dingle for my first o-event on Blaise (and first night-o other than the Jukola in ages). Was quite late by the time I got there but fortunately the nice organisers let me head out still. It was a well planned score event taking in a few bits I'm less familiar with. My legs felt quite tired by now, but cruised round ok. Lost a few mins but only due to either not seeing the flag or the map being poor. It could be a real good area Blaise - just a shame the map's garbage.

Route: 1, 13, 15, 16, 3, 4, 12, 19, 24, 8, 26, 14, 22, 17, 10, 5, 27, 11, 20, 9, 6, 18, 25, 7, 21, 23, 2.

Running 16:00 [3] 3.0 km (5:20 / km)

From home to the start and back. If only all events were this handy.

Running 50:00 [2] 9.0 km (5:33 / km)

HFW via the Downs and the Dingle. Felt alright, just a bit sluggish. Probably my last HFW in the light for quite a while.

Running 26:00 [2] 4.0 km (6:30 / km)
(sick)

Nice and gentle round Blaise with Gracie at the start of her longer run. Feeling a bit better but plenty of cobwebs to dust off - not a very bad cold tbh.

Tuesday Oct 26, 2010 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Still not quite right - went along to the Bridge Inn 5k to cheer Gracie on.

Monday Oct 25, 2010 #

Probably deserved that - got a cold

Running race (Exmoor Stagger) 1:50:10 [5] 16.0 mi (6:53 / mi) +1100m 5:40 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Glorious day out at Exmoor. Feeling a bit sniffly when we rocked up, so knew that running would make me properly ill, but it was such a nice day and I was probably gonna get ill anyway, that I decided I had one run left in me. A good choice too, as I felt really good once I got going. Some fast guy shot off the front early on and I sat in 2nd on my own for the next hour or so. The people at the 9mile drinks point got excited telling me that I was closing on him, and sure enough I got to within 10-20secs of him not much later. He then shot off up the last hill and somehow finished 2.45mins in front, so that was the end of that excitement. Still, really pleased with how I ran (I think we did the 2 fastest times ever) and it was a gorgeous day and I really enjoyed the course - defo gonna have to go back to Exmoor for some training and exploring sometime. Won 4 bottles of wine. Well worth getting ill for.

IW - first frosty one for me this winter.
5 PM

Running 1:04:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:34 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

I ummed and ahhed long and hard about training today, indeed at all ever again, as despite being perfectly fit and healthy myself, if I decided to train I would be opening the door to catching other peoples illnesses. In the end I decided I would take the risk, foolish I know, and head out into the cold and do a run HFW via AC for a change.

Running 1:30:00 [3] 20.0 km (4:30 / km)

Nice sunny, slightly chilly, longish study day afternoon run of exploring. From Winterbourne Down up along the Frome Valley path to Iron Acton and back on country lanes and paths via Ram Hill. Nothing spectacular or exciting, but all very quaint. Got a wee bit lost in a random field far from anywhere and while monkeying around looking for the way out found £10 nestled in the grass. Lovely.

Running 1:06:00 [3] 16.0 km (4:08 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Ran from work to the car to dump my bag, only it was raining heavily. Decided it'd be better to use the car to get home, and run from there once it had stopped - the plan worked pretty well, although the run from home was a roady one in the dark. On the plus side, it did mean I ran quite hard in places, especially up Parry's Lane onto the Downs.

Monday Oct 18, 2010 #

Running 1:12:00 [3] 15.0 km (4:48 / km)

Team Monday with bumper turn out. Through AC and AP to Failand. Then a bit of road running back to AC which I tried to get over with as quick as possible. And a nice jaunt back from there. Tim let out a huge sigh of relief at the finish.

Orienteering race (CompassSport Cup Final) 1:02:15 [5] 11.0 km (5:40 / km)
shoes: Inov8 oroc 280

1st on the Brown, BOK came 2nd to SYO (boo hiss). Pretty good run - not too tired at the finish as I never felt like I was going continuously hard for very long - wading through deep heather/bracken (and getting a tight hamstring from having to lift my right leg so unnaturally high) and having to find these here flag things interrupted things a bit. I started ok through Houndkirk and Lady Cannings. Put the boot in and got a good lead on the long leg to #7 (round the sheep trods to the right seemed to work well). I didn't do the rest of the course great though - didn't extend the lead at all from that point on. Dropped bits of time on #8 (bad line), #10 (bad route), #11 (bad line), #13 (dodgy control site - lost ~1min) and #15 (being a spaz, lost ~45secs). Still, job done, glad Oli and GG weren't there.

Lovely day though and good to be back up on t'moors. LJ's for the traditional cumberland sausage and gravy after. Mmmmm.

Running 1:01:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:21 / km)

Running 1:38:00 [3] 22.0 km (4:27 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

Fairly long HFW via AC having dumped bag in the car. After AC headed on out to Gordano Round territory and on and across the M5 bridge. Got quite dark as I came back along KW hill. A little nippy.

6 PM

Running 1:59:00 [3] 24.0 km (4:58 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

HFW via AC carrying bag. Felt quite good. Then picked up Gracie and jogged down to Coombe Dingle for the BOK club night which was a 45min street score. Alas this was of the quiz variety with many controls which meant lots of stop-starting, confusion and getting quite cold quickly. I enjoyed it, but I'm unusual. I hope there weren't any newcomers.

Running 53:00 [3] 12.0 km (4:25 / km)

IW via Purdown and the city farm. Saw the piggies this time.

Running 1:11:00 [3] 14.5 km (4:54 / km)

Team Monday with Matt, Mark S and new Team Monday member Duncan Birtwistle. The pace seemed to be hotter than usual. Leigh Woods, Fifty Acre Wood and AC. Head torch lasted the distance. Felt a little achey after yesterday but not too bad.

Running race (Mendip Muddle) 1:19:11 [5] 20.0 km (3:58 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-talon 212

Nice 'fell' race in the Mendips - not really a fell race, but as good as you get in these parts. Enjoyed it though. Didn't mean to get in a lead as early as I did - felt great for the first ~45mins, but was still about to be passed by Leaney from Clevedon, only he stacked it making his move. Unlucky! So I found myself on my own but dying up the long drag back up to Beacon Batch. Slowed a lot and the next guy made a lot of time on me. Hung on for the win though - fastest time since 1997, but I don't think I ran great.

Got rather outdone by other APers - it wasn't quite a World Cup medal, or a Lakeland Classic victory, or a fast Pentland skyline win, a marathon pb, or a sub 3hr Chicago marathon. I bet they didn't win a round of golf for 4, a bright orange womens running top and a bottle of wine though. Grace also won a hamper of organic dairy products :o)

Running 1:02:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:26 / km)

Fairly nice run up mainly on the Frome Valley Walkway, including Frenchay Moor, some old hill fort and Oldbury Court. Quite nice. Took it fairly gently as I've been feeling tired recently and it's the Mendip Muddle tomorrow. Felt pretty good this time.

Ran with Gracie from the Frome Valley down to the city farm to see the pigs and piglets. Didn't see any though as they were in their sty, so hotfooted it back across Purdown and home to eat some bacon as consolation. In my belly.

Running 36:00 [3] 8.0 km (4:30 / km)

Bit of a teaser tonight - Apprentice or Midsomer Murders. Which to watch first and which to record?

Running 1:12:00 [3] 16.0 km (4:30 / km)

HFW, having dumped my bag in the car, via AC and the Dingle. Still feeling a bit tired.

Running 1:05:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:39 / km)
shoes: Nike Pegasus

HFW via Montpellier, some city farm thing (cute piglets), Purdown (didn't find the trig again, but narrowed it's location down to a patch of brambles), Airbus, golf course... Now the golf course bit was interesting. Police helicopter hovering over and 15-20 police fanned out surrounding a thickety copse. I stood and watched for a bit hoping that whoever/whatever it was they were surrounding would make a dash for it, but nothing happened. He/she/it must've been very naughty though. Anyway, felt a bit like I was being watched as I ran off but was relieved when the helicopter didn't follow me home. That was all a welcome distraction from the fact I felt shite.

Running 1:03:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:30 / km)

Dark run round Blaise with newly repaired headtorch which seems to be working much better. Saw some bats. Let off some post-exam steam - it didn't go great but boohoo. Re-found the Shitehampton GC trig which I was worried had been dismantled but is actually only covered in nettles.

Running 44:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:24 / km)

Blast round Blaise in the dark and rain (got a replacement battery for my headtorch). Felt quite good. Saw a fox again, same one possibly. Also saw 2x Kingfishers. Admittedly these were later though and were of the liquid variety and were a welcome accompanyment to my curry at Roshni's.

Running 34:00 [3] 7.0 km (4:51 / km)

Blaise, post studying all day. Exam is Monday arvo so weekend looking quite unfun. Evening didn't turn out too bad considering it had pissed it down for 24hrs non-stop pretty much. Interestingly, a big tree has fallen over the path coming off KW hill - would've killed an unlucky walker for sure. Saw a fox. No more interesting anecdotes.
